A well known owner of a Mediterranean yacht charter vessel charges nearly €100,000 per week. In specific, to rent his yacht. His day job brings him vast sums of money, however.
Actor Johnny Depp is the owner of the 156′ motor yacht VAJOLIROJA. Depp opens up about his staggering paychecks. In specific, in the November issue of Vanity Fair magazine.
“Basically, if they’re going to pay me the stupid money right now, I’m going to take it,” he admits in the magazine article. “I have to. I mean, it’s not for me. Do you know what I mean? At this point, it’s for my kids. It’s ridiculous, yeah, yeah. But ultimately is it for me? No. No. It’s for the kids.”
Depp shot to the top of the list of Hollywood’s highest paid actors. This is thanks to the stellar success of Disney‘s Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise. Depp is mum on the size of his Pirates “ransom.” A recent report puts his total take in the $300 million range. This is due to a gross-profit-sharing deal brokered with Disney. To date, the four-film franchise has tallied $3.7 billion in worldwide receipts. Depp to star in a 5th installment.
Johnny Depp yacht, ValJoLiRoJa
It’s believed Depp’s passion for the sea, and his purchase of a mega yacht charter vessel stems from his years of filming the Pirates movies in exotic locales such as the Bahamas. His yacht, motor yacht VaJoLiRoJa — the boat’s clever name comes from combining the first few letters of each family member’s name, partner Vanessa Paradis, Johnny, and their kids, Lily-Rose and Jack — is a 156 foot yacht of distinctive character, inspired by the classic gentleman’s yachts of the 1930’s.
The lavishly-styled interior evokes the romance and glamour of a bygone era (with a few pirate-themed hints throughout).
Relive the Golden Era of yachting on board a classic yacht this winter. Depp’s yacht VAJOLIROJA is available for hire in the Bahamas or St Martin. It joins another classic-style Caribbean charter yacht, sail yacht GERMANIA NOVA.
Back in September, we reported on the great values being offered for a Virgin Islands yacht charter during the Thanksgiving holidays.
Then, motor yacht SERENITY jumped on the band wagon and offered a fall special for a Thanksgiving charter in the Bahamas.

The British Antarctic survey ship, RSS Ernest Shackleton, drydocked recently in Denmark. Her hull stunned the shipyard engineers and paint specialists. The ship spent two seasons battering her way through ice up to 2.5 meters thick. A high content of abrasive gravel and volcanic lava exists in the ice. Amazement seizes the inspection team. The hull coating stayed virtually intact and undamaged.
STRIPPED HULL
This is in strong contrast to the Shackleton’s previous drydocking. Specifically, almost the entire hull with a conventional ice-going underwater hull coating, was practically stripped. Bare, unprotected steel exists.
THE HULL COATING
The difference lay in the fact that when the Shackleton left drydock in 2009, the hull was newly coated with Ecospeed, a glass flake vinyl ester resin underwater hull coating proven to have extraordinary anti-corrosion strength and flexibility.
The success of the new underwater hull coating on the Shackleton heralds a breakthrough in icebreaker protection. Some observers foresee this as an opportunity for the expansion of Arctic luxury yacht charter.
BIG FISH – McMullen & Wing Superyacht
COLD WATER EXPEDITION YACHT
Leading the way for cold-water expedition yacht charters is motor yacht BIG FISH. This 45-meter explorer is a 2010 build. Her owner wants a yacht that travels to remote parts of the world. In addition, also has a contemporary, open style with floor-to-ceiling windows. Designed by Greg Marshall and built at the McMullen & Wing yard in Auckland, Big Fish visited Antarctica as part of her virgin circumnavigation of the globe.
“We see more expedition-style yachts enter the market each season,” says Sheeder. “Exploration vessels like motor yacht BIG FISH are opening the door to a new world of charter possibilities. The new Ecospeed hull coating technology could mean even more yachts will be able to safely visit remote cruising grounds in both the Arctic and Antarctic. I can’t think of a better way to learn about nature and our endangered wildlife.”
With the demand for luxury sailing charter catamarans on the rise, the team at Lagoon recently introduced the all-new 2012 Lagoon 620 catamaran at the Cannes Boat Show. The Lagoon 620 is an innovative solution to the needs of today’s discerning Caribbean yacht charter client. Professional design by the architects Van Peteghem and Lauriot Prévost (VPLP). The yacht seamlessly blends strength, comfort, and performance in a charter-friendly cabin layout.
LAGOON 620

Additional volume created by the repositioning of the master cabin’s washroom.
MULTIPLE VERSIONS
The Lagoon 620 catamaran has 4, 5 and 6 cabin versions. All versions featuring Nauta interior layout packages. In addition, they incorporate multiple items. For instance, wood finish, upholstery, and inner liners.

The Washington Redskins are currently 3-1 and in 1st place in the NFC East Division, heading into week 5 of the NFL regular season. What better way for team owner Dan Snyder to celebrate the squad’s early season success than to purchase a 224-foot superyacht?

AMELS SUPERYACHT LADY ANNE
The Washington Post recently reported Snyder’s recent purchase, Amels motor yacht LADY ANNE, one of the 100 largest yachts in the world. Snyder purchased the Mediterranean yacht charter vessel with a group of investors for approximately the same price that he’ll spend on two-thirds of his Redskins payroll for the year (or, as one sports journalist described it, “…the yacht cost $30 million less than it took to secure the rights to Albert Haynesworth in free agency!”).
YACHT PRICE
Motor yacht LADY ANNE was listed for sale at $86 million when it went on the market earlier this year, but sold for considerably less (sources estimate the price at or near $70 million – about one half of the cost to build the vessel).
YACHT BUILD
The yacht was custom-made by Dutch shipbuilders Amels for Jerome Fisher in 2006 and named after his wife. Fisher co-founded the shoe company Nine West and sold his interest to Jones Apparel Group for $885 million in 1999. The couple lived the grand life in Palm Beach until 2008, when, according to the New York Post, they lost $150 million in the Bernie Madoff investment scandal.
WHO OWNED LADY ANNE?
The Fishers, who spent last month cruising on the LADY ANNE off the coast of France, did not respond to requests for comment about the sale.

The yacht has the unique feel of an early 20th century ocean liner.” The massive yacht boasts vast shaded outdoor areas, together with a large pool and sunbathing space. Indoors, there is a comprehensively-equipped gym, massage area, sauna, and home theater.

According to Sheeder, there is no need to be an NFL team owner, or a fan of the Redskins to spend time aboard this yacht.
Sheeder teases,
“While we might offer a discount to fans of my hometown team, the Miami Dolphins, we will happily charter LADY ANNE to anyone who loves spending private time with their family and friends.”

St. Lucia makes a move to bolster and support cruising in its waters. The government announced new, revised policies regarding yachting.
GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
Policies are announced by the St Lucia Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation. They create rules to stimulate growth in St. Lucia’s yachting sector. New rules facilitate clearing in and out of the country. They also ease taxation and include many other benefits.
CHANGES
There are five changes. For instance,
100% waiver on income tax from operations for the first 5 years for local charter companies with a minimum of 1 captain and 3 crew members and a fleet of 3 or more power or sailing vessels
Approval has been given for the formation of a Yachting Committee, that falls under the purview of the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation and will incorporate all relevant institutions that function to regulate the yachting sector in St. Lucia
Additional Changes
Third, 100% waiver of import duty and consumption tax on boat safety equipment and watercraft activity equipment, which includes sport fishing, SCUBA diving, kite surfing and other water sports, subject to verification of the Bill of Quantities by the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation for 5 years from date of cabinet conclusion

Fourth, 100% waiver of import duty and consumption tax on all equipment and materials imported or purchased locally for use in the establishment of infrastructure to service yachts over period of 5 years, subject to verification and approval of the Bill of Quantities by the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation
Finally, the Government of Saint Lucia has waived the visa requirements for Russian and Australian nationals so that Russian and Australian nationals no longer require visas to enter Saint Lucia.
JANA SHEEDER, COMPANY PRESIDENT, COMMENTS
Jana Sheeder, President of SailAway Yacht Charters and 1-800 Yacht Charters applauds the new regulations. Says Sheeder,
“These changes will benefit everyone in the yachting industry, from owners and their crews, to charter guests and yacht service businesses. Most importantly, bolstering the yacht industry will have a positive economic impact on the residents of St. Lucia.”
Sheeder is especially excited at the prospect of easing visa restrictions for Russian travelers.
“Caribbean yacht charter vacations are extremely popular with Russian customers,” says Sheeder. “Any steps we can take to facilitate their ability to travel freely will encourage more Russians to visit the islands by boat.”

We welcome new safety rules for the construction of superyachts. These apply to the mega yacht charter marketplace. Specifically, for charter party yachts of more than 12 passengers.
THE RULE MAKERS, BUREAU VERITAS
BV, Bureau Veritas, is the international classification society. The Bureau updated the set of classification rules for yachts. The rules cover multiple things. For instance, design, material and equipment certification. They also cover construction surveillance at the shipyard. In addition, standards apply to yacht charter vessels of over 12 passengers.
These new standards bridge the gap between international conventions applying to passenger ships and yacht industry standards.
“We’ve been fighting for new standards for a long time. The regulatory environment for luxury yacht charter vessels carrying more than twelve passengers has been confusing for years. Costly conventions developed for passenger vessels like cruise ships carrying hundreds of passengers were forced upon superyachts clearly built for large families and corporate charters.”
Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters, being filmed at Palm Beach International Yacht Show
According to Sheeder, the cost of compliance to non-conforming standards means charter yachts with the capacity to carry more than 12 passengers have been forced to only accept charters for 12 or fewer passengers.
“Owners of yachts with accommodations for 13 or more guests were hesitant to spend the large sums of money needed to bring their yachts into compliance with cruiseship-level standards.”
“The result,” says Sheeder, “is that only a handful of mega yacht charter vessels can legally accommodate more than 12 guests. ”
YACHT INDUSTRY STANDARDS
The new Bureau Veritas rules develop a set of requirements. These are close to the international conventions, but they are customized to the yacht industry standards. The new regulations result in new charter yachts built to carry between twelve and thirty six passengers.
DEMAND EXISTS
“The demand is there,” says Sheeder. “Large, extended families end up renting island villas or staying in resorts when no suitable yachts are available. Hopefully, the new regulations will result in more available yachts for parties of thirteen or more.”
AVAILABLE LARGE CHARTER YACHTS
Yachts currently available for large families include the 36-passenger motor yacht CHRISTINA O. In addition, the 40-passenger LAUREN L, and the 36-passenger motor yacht MOONLIGHT II are favorites. The 30-passenger motor yacht RM ELEGANT fits the bill as well.
