“When these difficult times return to normal, our family is interested in booking a yacht charter for late summer in Greece.
We’re worried if unforeseen coronna (sp) virus issues could arise we might be forced to cancel, and we don’t want to lose our deposits.
Is there anything we can do to protect ourselves?”
-Vanessa A, East Fallowfield, PA
ANSWER
“Hi, Vanessa. The short and simple answer is:
‘YES. There are things 1-800 Yacht Charters can do to protect you should you need to cancel your charter due to Covid-19 issues.’
There are insurance products available for trip cancellations, but they are not uniform in their coverage options. I have developed and implemented a 2-part strategy to protect our clients.
As a general rule, yacht charter contracts are written to protect the yacht owner and his/her asset (the yacht). This is in the event of damages or cancellations. The rationale is simple. Specifically, the client may be paying thousands of dollars to enjoy a vacation on a yacht. However, the owner’s exposure is far greater. Moreover, many yachts are worth millions of dollars. Owners wisely use a well-crafted, legal charter agreement to protect themselves.
One example of how owners protect themselves is known as the “Force majeure provision.” This clause is inserted into most luxury yacht charter agreements. It gives the owner the right to cancel a charter due to “Acts of God.” These are acts/events that prohibit the yacht and crew from proceeding with the charter.
This relates to the Covid-19 virus situation. Under the force majeure provision, a yacht owner has to return the charter money to the customer. This is if the yacht cannot perform due to marina closures, virus-infected crew members etc. That’s good news for the charter customer. However…
IF THE CHARTERER CANCELS
IF the charterer is the one who cancels, things work differently. Even due to Covid-19 issues (for instance, due to a quarantine or flight cancellation), the Owner has the right to claim ALL of the installments paid and due from the Charterer. In other words, the Charterer forfeits any and all monies paid to date for the charter! The owner is not obligated to reschedule or to give the funds back.
OUR OPINION
We believe that the force majure provision is the main reason potential charterers withdrew their inquiries for spring and early summer. Some clients willingly canceled their trips. They know they would lose their initial deposits. They wanted to stop the bleeding now. Stop it before second and third deposits were due as the charter dates draw closer.
CHARTER CANCELLATIONS – THE SOLUTION
1-800 Yacht Charters now offers a penalty-free Covid-19 refund policy* on a large selection of luxury charter yachts. To insure the yacht owners comply, we prepare an addendum to the standard charter agreement. This addendum clearly states the owner of the yacht agrees to a full refund. This is if the charterer is forced to cancel due to Covid-19 issues.
Now charterers can protect their deposits in 2 ways. They can either reschedule their trip(s) to a future date or receive a complete refund.
WANT MORE INFO?
Would you like to review the Covid-19 charter addendum? Send an email request to info@1800yachtcharters.com today. Please include your full name and phone number in your email. In conclusion, we have your back. Our team at 1-800 Yacht Charters values your business and vacations. We protect you.
TO WHAT DOES THE * (ABOVE) APPLY?
*This new policy does not apply to all yachts. It also may depend upon the charter destination and charter dates. Certain restrictions apply. Please check with your yacht charter consultant before proceeding with your reservation. More importantly, clarify this before making any deposits or payments.

BEAUTIFUL ST. BARTS
Why is St Barts so popular? It is always sunny with very little rain. The tiny island has become famous for celebrity sightings. In specific, especially during the year-end holidays. This is where all-night New Year’s Eve yacht hops and parties capture the attention of the global newswires.

HOLLYWOOD SOUTH
So just where is St Barts, the island paradise dubbed, “Hollywood South?”
WHERE IS ST. BARTS?
The island of St. Barts is popular. Specifically, where is it located? St. Barts is a tiny island situated in the French West Indies. Located 17°55’ north and 62°50’ west, just below the Tropic of Cancer, and north of the chain of the Lesser Antilles. Puerto Rico is 240 km (about 160 miles) to the west.
St. Barts – Caribbean map
ALL ABOUT SAINT BARTS
St. Barts lies 35 km southeast of Saint Martin, separated by the Saint-Barthélemy Channel. It lies northeast of Saba and St Eustatius, and north of St Kitts. Some small satellite islets belong to St. Barts including Île Chevreau, Île Frégate, Île Toc Vers, and Île Tortue. A much bigger islet, Île Fourchue, lies to the north of the island, in the Saint-Barthélemy Channel. Other nearby islets include Coco, the Roques (or little Turtle rocks), and Sugarloaf.
Seven thousand kilometers separate St Barts from Paris, but it is just 2500 from New York (about a 4 hour flight).
Sardinia has been on everyone’s radar for the past few weeks. First, we heard how Steven Spielberg, with Gwyneth Paltrow in tow, ran afoul of the local authorities as the tender to his superyacht, motoryacht SEVEN SEAS cruised too close to island beachgoers.
PERINI NAVI YACHT CHARTER FLEET
Then, we reported on the Perini Navi yacht charter fleet preparing for early September’s sailing regatta against the beautiful backdrop of Porto Cervo, Sardinia.
WANT TO SEE IT ON A MAP?
So exactly where is Sardinia and what is the allure that draws so many sailors and visitors?
Sardinia is Italy’s second-largest island as well as the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It is famous for its beautiful beaches and fascinating history. The nearest land masses are (clockwise from north) the French island of Corsica, the Spanish Balearic Islands, and the Italian Peninsula, Sicily, and Tunisia.
For Atlas lovers, the island of Sardinia is situated between 38° 51′ and 41° 15′ latitude north and 8° 8′ and 9° 50′ east longitude. To the west of Sardinia is the Balearic Sea; to Sardinia’s east is the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Over many centuries the island has survived countless invasions by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Arabs. Local festivals on the island still reflect the long-lasting impact of those cultures.
Numerous castles, villages, temples and tombs cover the countryside, and with its perfect summer weather, tourists arrive in droves, some via Mediterranean yacht charter vessels, but many more via ferry service from the Italian mainland. In conclusion, where is Sardinia? It is a beautiful superyacht charter destination in the Mediterranean. It is perfect for The Superyacht Experience(tm) by 1800yachtcharters.
We present educational and fun information. This blog is written by a superyacht Stew (stewardess). Great tips on dining etiquette on a yacht charter.
<< Stew Cues: The Continental divide at the dining table is drawn on a ‘zigzag’
by Alene Keenan (blog style edited by 1800yachtcharters)
STEW EXPERIENCE
When I have had the pleasure of having a meal with the crew while training on board a yacht, I often find non-U.S. crew staring at me while I eat. I understand that they are trying to figure out what I am doing. There are various styles of using cutlery. The European, or Continental, style and the American style are quite different.
CONTINENTAL DINING STYLE
In the Continental style, what is picked up with the left hand stays in the left hand, and what is picked up in the right hand stays in the right hand. Etiquette varies between countries as to where the hands go when cutlery is not in use.
AMERICAN DINING STYLE
In the American style, diners switch the fork from the left to the right hand after cutting, and the left hand rests in the lap. While each style is correct for the culture it belongs to, using your knife and fork in a certain way may innocently cause offense to other diners.
THE HISTORY OF DINING
The earliest method of eating was with the hands, of course. Knives came along as one of man’s earliest tools and were used more as weapons for hunting than implements for eating. Spoons probably came next, fashioned from shells, horns, or carved wood, with a stick attached for a longer reach.
MIDDLE AGES DINING ETIQUETTE
In the Middle Ages, cutlery was not provided for dinner guests. Knives and spoons were part of a traveler’s kit that the wealthy used as much to impress as for practical reasons. Most common people still ate with their hands, using dried pieces of bread called “trenchers” to push their food. Some men ate with their personal knives, using two knives to stab and slice their food.
UTENSILS
Forks made from twigs were used to remove meat from boiling pots, but the fork as a utensil was not common. God had provided natural utensils – the hands – and it was seen as an insult to use a fork. In 1004, a Greek princess was married to the son of the Doge in Venice. She brought a case of golden forks with her and shocked the guests at the wedding when she used one. Her death from the plague soon after was considered by many to be God’s vengeance.
CATHERINE DE MEDICI
Catherine de Medici promoted them when she brought forks from Italy for her marriage to the future Henry II. Over time, forks became more common, but they had only two tines and didn’t work very well. Eventually, they became more curved, and third and fourth tines were added for better functionality.
THE USE OF KNIVES
According to a familytreemagazine.com article by David A Fryxell on Dec. 22, 2010, it was a change in the knife that laid forks at every place setting, and forever divided how Europeans and Americans eat. Apparently, the French Cardinal Richelieu had visitors’ knives ground down because the habit of picking the teeth with a knife disgusted him. And in the court of King Louis XIV, pointed knives were banned from the table to prevent dinnertime fights (Game of Thrones, anyone?). Since rounded knives were useless for spearing food, forks replaced them in the left hand.
THE ZIGZAG
Fryxell goes on to say that forks were not readily available when these innovative new knives reached the American colonies, so Americans used upside-down spoons to steady food for cutting. Then they would switch the spoon to the right hand, where for most people it would be easier to use it to scoop up food. This style continued to be used even after forks became everyday utensils, prompting Emily Post to name it the “zigzag” style in the 1920s. Voila! At last, there is an explanation for this crazy American behavior that is considered uncouth by many Europeans.
TODAY’S ETIQUETTE
Nowadays forks are on every proper table, and there are many types of specialized forks. We have salad forks, oyster forks, and fish forks. In addition, pastry forks, asparagus forks, and even ice cream forks, to name a few.
SUMMARY
In conclusion, the Continental style is thought to be a more graceful way of dining. However, it is best to use whichever style is most comfortable. The golden rule is to be considerate of other diners. Be consistent. Do not switch styles back and forth between courses.

Funny enough, yes, yacht charters typically cast a spell on guests. They choose yachting as their favorite vacation. In addition, they repeat the vacation often!
As far as spelling? There are many uncommon terms used in the yacht charter industry. For instance, purser, bosun, and lazarette. But why do I need to spell them?
YACHTING TERMS REASONING
Yacht charter guests do not need to spell boating terms. Have your charter broker and your attorney handle and explain any contractual details and paperwork. It is your job to simply enjoy your vacation.
We understand. Many yacht charter guests simply desire education (as do we). Besides, some charter clients end up as superyacht owners. Subsequently, The Superyacht Experience™ is important to them from all aspects, including spelling.
TERMS THROUGH LANGUAGE
Some items are spelled uniquely in different languages. For instance, salon vs saloon. Does it matter when chartering a yacht? No, not at all. If you are on a yacht, and your crew mentions a term you haven’t heard, simply ask for an explanation.
A COMMONLY USED UNCOMMON TERM
There is an oft-used term in yachting that relates to criminal incarceration. Yikes. Most brokerages continue to use the term, as it is most recognized and used in the industry. That term is “al fresco.” In yacht charter, it refers to any outside space. For example, al fresco (or alfresco) dining commonly refers to outdoor dining.
The actual definition of al fresco in Italian means, “in prison.” Over the years, the term has gained popularity in use for outdoor yachting areas or activities, so it is not frowned upon in the superyacht industry. Alas, times change. In addition, the millennial generation and Urban Dictionary for the term, al fresco, now mean to go without undergarments or to “go commando.”
DO YACHT CHARTERS, THEN, CAST A SPELL?
That is up to you. If spelling and terminology haunt you or give you pause, then maybe yes. If you simply want to enjoy The Superyacht Experience™ and the wonderful magical spell that yachting creates, then it doesn’t matter what things are called — or how they are spelled! As the saying goes, “just don’t call me late for dinner!”
Janet Winters is the author of The Barn Goddess Chronicles, a blog celebrating the equestrian lifestyle. Winters refers to the lifestyle as, “…a journey of adventure, discovery and community…We never know what any particular ride will be like.”
That spirit of adventure bonds the equestrian and yachting lifestyles together. Indeed, each time we “climb aboard” – whether it’s a steed or a luxury yacht – we have the chance to immerse ourselves in adventure. Moreover, it’s an opportunity to rejuvenate mind, body, and spirit.
THE DESTINATION
It’s hard to imagine a luxury yacht charter destination that beckons to equestrian travelers more than the Mediterranean. The Eastern “Med” includes Greece and the Aegean Sea. The Western Med covers the French Riviera and Italy’s western coast, as well as the islands of Corsica and Sardinia. The scenery is breathtaking. In fact, everywhere you turn, you see hills and mountains that look down on uncrowded beaches and turquoise-green waters.
Remember the classic film, The Black Stallion? (Oh, who could forget!!??) The young, shipwrecked boy and his newfound equine friend are inseparable. It is a magnificent friendship. They spend much of the first part of the film exploring an uninhabited beach and frolicking in the sea.
Those mesmerizing scenes take place on the beautiful island of Sardinia.
Just look at the color of the water!!!!
GO, GO, GO – FEI MONACO
Are you familiar with the places to see and the things to do during a yacht charter in the Med? Please don’t worry if your answer is “no.” Our team will create a bespoke itinerary for you. It will be based on the activities you enjoy.
For example, we created a Equestrian-Friendly yacht charter itinerary that kicks off in Monaco at the annual FEI Monte Carlo, Port Hercules Standard Show (June 25-25).
Day 1: Monaco
The FEI show jumping arena is set up right in front of the marina! Your superyacht will serve as your floating hotel while you attend the event.
Try to envision the sequence of your day.
First, you wake up and enjoy an open-air breakfast, on deck. Everywhere you look you see beautiful yachts, docked side by side. Second, you take the short walk to the FEI arena for an exciting day of world-class show jumping. When you need a break, your crew is standing by – ready to serve you a freshly-prepared lunch. No one but you and your family and friends are onboard. Third, when the jumping is over for the day, you and your guests return to your luxury yacht. After all, it’s time for an impromptu and oh-so-casual cocktail hour!
Without a doubt, it’s hard to imagine a more convenient vacation arrangement for watching the FEI show… This is the Equestrian Lifestyle at its best…
Now, its time to explore Monaco and then set off for adventure. Let’s look at the rest of your 7-night itinerary:
Day 2: Monaco
Monaco is the second smallest state in Europe. The only city, Monte-Carlo, is synonymous with all things luxury – casinos, resorts, superyachts, exclusive parties, and exotic cars. You and your family and guests can enjoy activities such as:
-Helicopter rides over the city
-A test drive in a F1 race car
-Lunch at Le Vistamar, at Hotel Hermitage*
-Dancing the night away at the exclusive nightclub, Jimmy’z.
*Additionally, other beautiful lunch options include Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, Au Grand Inquisteur
Finally, the dining experience at 3-Michelin star restaurant, Louis XV is not to be missed. This fine establishment features the unique food interpretation of international renowned executive-chef Alain Ducasse.
Day 3: Pampelonne Beach, St.Tropez
Pampelonne Beach is the sandy locale that fuels St Tropez’s fame. Over 20,000 people a day visit this beach in the peak of the summer (July/August). Even so, you’ll never feel overwhelmed as your private superyacht is at anchor, just a few yards from the beach. You decide how much interaction, if any, you want with the local community and tourists. The top beach clubs/restaurants worthy of a visit are Nikki Beach, Bagatelle, Cap 21, Les Murenes, and Le Club 55.
WHAT AWAITS YOU…
Day 4: ????

HOW TO BOOK YOUR EQUESTRIAN YACHT CHARTER

The working vacation: one report estimates that 30% of employees do office work while on vacation.
Sure, you can call it an oxymoron, but in reality, many corporate executives mix business with pleasure when spending time away from the office.
Increasingly, the largest yachts available for luxury mega yacht charter are being designed with the business traveler in mind – whether it’s via a small desk to check emails, or a complete media room for meetings and conferences.
The most common design is an area adjacent to the master cabin, which can serve as both an office or a sitting room.
The least common, but starting to appear in more and more superyachts is the dedicated meeting center. Normally not part of the master suite, these dedicated media spaces are often on a separate deck, with room for conducting business and holding meetings or small conferences.
Whether formal or casual in design, most office spaces onboard yachts feature built-in internet connections, video screens, storage space, and most importantly – privacy.
Let’s look at some modern onboard office areas:
Motoryacht MI SUENO – the study is part of the owner’s suite and features comfort, privacy, and the latest in technology.
Motoryacht SIREN – situated forward on the yacht’s main deck is the master suite. Attached is a private office which can be converted into a nanny’s stateroom with a double Pullman berth.
Motoryacht TURQUOISE – connected to the owner’s cabin, the office seems small in comparison to other yachts. What makes the room with desk so charming is the upright piano.
WELLNESS
Remember to always focus on wellness. Take a technology break on vacation. You owe it to yourself to rest, relax, and enjoy the fruits of your labors!

HURRICANE IRMA HITS THE CARIBBEAN
Hurricane Irma struck the British Virgin Islands in early September, 2017. She left destruction. For instance, a trail of battered yachts, debris-filled beaches, and widespread destruction.
STATE OF THE CARIBBEAN
Fast forward 2-plus years. The island chain is once again as popular as ever as a world-class yacht charter destination! The islands are back to normal. For example, the debris is gone, the marinas are rebuilt, and the white-sand beaches are once again glistening in the rays of the warm Caribbean sun.
WHY CHOOSE THE BVI FOR YACHT CHARTER?
Great news! There is a new reason to choose the BVI this spring for your Caribbean superyacht experience. DUTY FREE FUEL.
GOVERNMENT AMENDMENT
The British Virgin Islands (BVIs) government amended its custom regulations in December 2019. They now offer duty free fuel to yachts.
Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters, explains:
“As long as your luxury charter yacht remains in the BVI for a minimum three days, your crew can take advantage of these cost savings. Depending upon the size of the superyacht you charter, the savings can be significant.”
PREMIER OF THE BVI COMMENTS
Andrew Fahie, the Premier of the BVI also commented on the new rule: “This will be a step in the right direction towards encouraging megayachts to make the BVI their home port,” says Andrew Fahie, the premier of the BVIs.
Other areas of the Caribbean, for instance, St Martin and St Barts, draw more megayacht visits. The BVIs seem prepared to give the other islands a run for their money.
Multiple marinas for deep-draft superyachts, especially sailing yachts, now exist.
The BVI has year-round warm temperatures and as a general rule. Not only that, but calmer waters occur here than in other areas of the Caribbean.
Flight times from the USA to the British Virgin Islands are shorter. Not only is there an international airport in Tortola suitable for both commercial and private jets. but there is also regular ferry service between the BVI and the nearby U.S. Virgin Islands.
If easy flight access, beautiful anchorages, and money-saving opportunities matter to you, consider the British Virgins for your next superyacht charter vacation this spring.
At this wonderful time of the year, we at SailAway Yacht Charter Consultants and 1-800 Yacht Charters wish our “yacht charter family” of discriminating clients, superyacht owners, professional crew members, management professionals, vendors, corporate and special event attendees, personal assistants, agents, concierges, and EVERYONE with whom we’ve had the privilege and honor to work and spend time with this year, a very happy holiday season.

Recent reports in the Indian press indicate changes. Specifically, a new yachting culture has hit Indian shores. Globe-trotting Indians are starting to flaunt express cruisers and speedboats. These are the new symbols of wealth. In addition, families are renting large yachts for vacations together.
THE NEXT LUXURY ITEM
Malav Shroff of Mumbai-based Mahindra Ocean Group comments. “After you have luxury cars, upmarket living spaces, high-end accessories, and farmhouses, where would you spend your money?Yachts are becoming elements of aspiration for many.”
POWERBOATS SELLING
Anju Dutta, a sales broker for Marine Solutions says sports cruisers are hot picks. “We have sold 45 Sea Ray sports boats and cruisers in the last year…in places like Goa, Cochin, and Kolkata,” she says. Marine Solutions also gets demand for premium Italian models like the Ferretti 570 motor yacht. More commonly seen in the Mediterranean yacht charter market, such as the Ferretti motor yacht NUMBER OF COWES, interest in both buying and chartering mid-range Ferretti models in India is on the rise.
COMPANY PRESIDENT COMMENTS
Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters has been monitoring the increased demand for yachts in India.
“Mumbai is the country’s yacht capital, says Sheeder. “The number of motoryachts in the city has increased form 100 to over 200 in the past three years. The city has over 700km of waterfront exposure and the Maharashtra government has plans to develop multiple marinas. This is truly an emerging yachting market.”
INDIAN EMPRESS
Many Indian-owned yachts are used exclusively by the owners. Further, others are now available for charter. Specifically, both in India and in ports around the world. Vijay Mallya owns the 95-meter motor yacht INDIAN EMPRESS. Sheeder and her company offer the yacht for hire. Her weekly rate is €600,000 plus expenses.
