Antigua Offers Historic Variety

Aerial view of Antigua yacht charter show yachts in a marina and docked on the water

VISIT ANTIGUA

Often overlooked by travelers considering a Caribbean yacht charter, Antigua is nothing short of a boater’s tropical paradise.  Its south and west coasts are cruising treasures, and the island has more scenic and sheltered anchorages than most Caribbean destinations.

ENGLISH HARBOUR NAVAL BASE

The island’s English Harbour first served as a British naval base in the 1600’s. The base and its nearby forts protected  Antigua’s lucrative sugarcane production.

THE FORT

Sailing into English Harbour is truly  memorable. The stone buildings of Fort Berkely to port and Shirley Heights high above to starboard are a dramatic sight. Sailboats and mega yacht charter vessels fill the harbour, and Sunsail operates a sailing bareboat charter base here. Cruising past the superyachts in the Harbour is breathtaking.Once you have anchored or docked in the marina, Nelson’s Dockyard, is well worth a stroll. It looks much as it did centuries ago, with working capstans and lovingly restored buildings.  Restaurants, hotels, boutiques and a museum keep the area lively.
Antigua photo. Picture taken from far end of fort. Shows a mountain in the background, with a stone fort and rock walls in the foreground, spanning to the end of the photo.
If you are fortunate to visit the island on a Sunday, an afternoon barbecue atop Shirley Heights with its spectacular sunset over English Harbour should not be missed.

CADES REEF SNORKELING

From English Harbour, many yachts cruise along the southwest coast to Cades Reef, a beautiful spot for snorkeling.  Further along the coastline is Boggy Peak, the highest peak on the island.

JOLLY HARBOUR

Moving up the west coast, is Jolly Harbor.  It offers a brand new marina and is surrounded by resort hotels with pools and restaurants.  Helicopters tours can be arranged to fly from Jolly Harbor to the island of Montserrat, to see the remains of a volcano that recently devastated that island.

DEEP BAY

If you like beaches, Antigua’s shoreline is one white sandy beach after another.  Deep Bay at Hawks Bill (near a rock that resembles a hawk’s head) is another great spot for an al fresco lunch and a swim.  Divers can explore a nearby shipwreck, the Andes.  For onshore activity, you can visit nearby Fort Barrington, and the Grand Royal Antiguan Beach Resort.

HERITAGE QUAY

Shoppers can spend time in St. John’s – the island’s capital city. The Heritage Quay area has trendy designer shops, while the nearby Redcliffe Quay is more traditional with inviting shady patios nestled amongst restored buildings.

WALKING TOUR

A walking tour of the city should include seeing St. John’s Cathedral and the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda.

SUGAR MILL

Renting a taxi is a good way to explore the island’s interior.  You can visit a real sugar mill at Betty’s Hope, or take a ride along Fig Tree Drive, where you can see the round stone towers of centuries-old abandoned sugar mills.

APACHE II Yacht At Cannes Film Festival Charter

Posted on

Photograph of motoryacht APACHE II running in front of a rocky island.
Presenting APACHE II.  She is another Mediterranean yacht charter vessel to reposition in Cannes, France, to attend the Cannes Film Festival 2011.

WHO IS APACHE II

The 44 meter motor yacht APACHE II will probably draw as much attention along the Côte d’Azur as the celebrities on her decks.

Baglietto yacht APACHE II is luxurious comfort and speed.  She proves the extensive technical experience of the yard.  The yacht hull and superstructure are whisper gray colored, and it is dynamic and looks futuristic.

APACHE II INTERIOR

The vessel’s sleek interior provides a calm and spacious environment. She has spaces for pleasure, relaxation, and cocktail parties.  Apache II features a uniquely elegant formal dining room with two extendable terraces.  These terraces are on the left and right, opposite sides of the boat. With terraces extended, the width of the dining area is doubled.  She provides an excellent layout for buffet dinners at special events.

ON DECK SEATING FOR THE RACE

Her large sun deck offers 360-degree views.  Guests have the best “seats” for spectator events, like Formula 1 Grand Prix races.  The yacht’s lounging area features sun pads, lounge chairs, and a wet bar.

Ask the Yacht Charter Pros: How to Pay Less VAT (Tax) on a France Yacht Charter Vacation?

Posted on

QUESTION

“I’m planning a 10 day private yacht charter in St. Tropez and the South of France in July. My broker say VAT is 20%. That’s seems a lot. Is there way to not pay this?”
Xavier E, Barcelona, Spain

ANSWER

Answer provided by Jana Sheeder, President 1-800 Yacht Charters:

“The bad news, Xavier, is all charters that take place in a European Union (EU) country are subject to VAT (Value Added Tax). However, we have good news as well – there is a simple, legal strategy that can cut your VAT expense in half.

Instead of paying 20%, this strategy will reduce your VAT to 10% of your base charter fee – a significant savings!

VAT EU logo yacht charter france
Each EU country can set their own level of VAT on commercial yachts for hire. In France, if the yacht undertakes a coastal cruise in French territorial waters, the VAT is 20% of the base charter fee (the base fee is the cost to rent the yacht before factoring in other running expenses such as food, dockage, etc.). So, for example, if you began your charter in Saint Tropez, and cruised along the Côte d’Azur and concluded your trip in Antibes, you would incur a VAT expense of 20%.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT VAT

However, IF you plan a portion of your charter to cruise in international waters, your legal responsibility for VAT drops to 10% – a savings of 50%!

So how do you do this? Here’s how: When you are planning your itinerary with the yacht’s captain prior to the commencement of your charter, let the captain know that you would like to, “visit a port that requires you to cruise in international waters and beyond the coast of France.”

HOW CAN I SAVE TAX?

You could, for example, leave the French coast and cruise to the island of Sardinia. This is approximately a 5-7 hour cruise from the South of France.

SPECIAL TIP

Ask your captain to undertake this crossing overnight, while you and your guests are sleeping. Then, when you rise in the morning, you’ll be able to spend a full day, or longer along the coastline of this fabled Italian island before heading back to France.

So there you have it.  With a little strategic planning, a slight deviation in your St Tropez yacht charter can result in big savings; possibly thousands of Euros depending upon the cost of your charter.”

Bareboat Sailboat Vacation Lets You Take The Helm

Posted on

VIRGIN ISLAND YACHT CHARTER VS SELF-SAIL

It’s hard to beat the outright indulgence of a Virgin Islands crewed yacht charter.  Every detail is managed by a trained crew.  From operating the yacht, to preparing your customized meals,  you are covered.  From keeping the vessel tidy and shipshape, to reading charts, all is done for you.

WANT TO ESCAPE?

But what about those times you feel the need to escape?  To be alone with loved ones?  Have a chance to trade polite intrusiveness with no-frills quality family time?

WHY NOT BAREBOAT?

Families who routinely enjoy luxury yacht charter vacations with a full-crew compliment can now opt to go boating in total privacy.  They can choose a bareboat yacht charter.

What is bareboating?  The concept is simple – just as you would rent a car to drive yourself, with some basic training, you can rent a bareboat and take the helm yourself!

WHAT IS A BAREBOAT YACHT CHARTER?

Sign that reads, Be Your Own Skipper at top. Center is photo of a woman sailing a yacht, with another sailboat in the background. The bottom reads, Rent a bareboat.

A “bareboat” is just as the name sounds.  It is a boat with just the bare essentials onboard.  It comes with no food, no beverages, and most noticeably, no crew.  You do your own cooking and cleaning. You operate and sail the yacht, yourself.

WHERE CAN I FIND A BAREBOAT?

Fleets of bareboats can be found in nearly every location you would expect to find a fully-crewed yacht charter vessel.  Virgin Islands bareboat vacations are perhaps the most common.  There are hundreds of boats available for rent in both St. Thomas, USVI, and Tortola, BVI.

ADDITIONAL LOCATIONS

Other top-rated destinations include Bahamas bareboat vacations in the Abaco island chain.  In addition,  Florida yacht charter holidays are available primarily in the Florida Keys.

Both sail yachts and motor yachts can be rented.  They accommodate 2 to 8 passengers.  A few bareboat catamaran yachts can even accommodate up to 10 passengers.

WHO RENTS BAREBOATS?

Companies such as 1-800-BAREBOAT, the Moorings, and Sunsail specialize in arranging self-skippered charters in destinations around the world; for example, Bahamas, Florida Keys, Greece, Corsica, Sardinia, France, Cote d’azur, Tortola, Tortolla, St. Thomas, Tahiti, Bora Bora, Tonga, Miami and South Florida.

GLOBAL FLEETS

Customers can choose from a global network of monohull sailboats with brands like Beneteau, Sun Odyssey, Dufour, or Jeanneau – and multihull catamarans with brands like Fountaine Pajot, Lagoon, and Sunreef.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Basic rental prices tend to be less much expensive than those of luxury crewed yacht charter vessels, but customers need to remember they are responsible to purchase and prepare their own meals.  The cost to provision the yacht must be considered when comparing this bare bones charter option to the price of a crewed yacht.

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN BAREBOATING?

Another important factor – the customer’s qualification to operate a boat.

Just as it takes skill and normally a license to operate a motor vehicle, similar rules apply to bareboats.  While formal licenses are not usually necessary, a solid level of competency is necessary.  The ability to read basic charts, navigate, and to set the anchor are the most important skills required to rent a bareboat.

HOW CAN I GET QUALIFIED TO BAREBOAT?

Luckily, these skills can easily be mastered, either through formal boating courses, or simply by garnering casual boating experience with your own boat or the boat of a friend or neighbor.

Popular ideas for bareboat yacht charter vacations are anniversary celebrations, family reunions (with boats sailing in tandem), couples getaways, and snorkeling adventures.

WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE CREW OR SAIL YOURSELF?

So before you plan your next tropical odyssey, give some thought and compare bareboat vacations to crewed charters  – one of them will surely be the right choice for you, your family, and friends!

HOW TO RENT A YACHT CHARTER

Ready to become the master of your destiny, or at least your sailing journey?   Taking the helm as the skipper of your own bareboat yacht charter is truly a rewarding experience for anyone who wants the challenge of guiding your own vessel in the world’s most exotic island destinations.  To charter a bareboat sailboat or powerboat, contact 1-800 Yacht Charters at https://www.1800yachtcharters.com/book-now-contact-us/ TODAY!

Newly built Benetti motor yacht CHECKMATE, fresh from her inaugural stint in the summer 2013 Mediterranean yacht charter market, has arrived in Fort Lauderdale, in preparation for the upcoming winter season.

BENETTI VISION 145

Launched earlier this year in Italy, she is the 15th vessel built in the fabled shipyard’s Vision series of semi-custom yachts.  The Benetti Vision 145 yacht CHECKMATE  now joins the many Benetti yacht charter vessels currently in service, such as motor yacht MINE GAMES, and James Bond yacht, DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER .

Five guest staterooms are available onboard.  For instance, a master cabin on the main deck, featuring a King bed.  In addition, ensuite baths featuring his and hers bathrooms.  Next, below deck are four spacious cabins with accommodations for 8 additional passengers.  These cabins contain two Pullman berths, suitable for small children.

FORT LAUDERDALE INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW

Benz-inspired Luxury Helicopter on Superyachts

Posted on

Photograph of a silver and black Mercedes Benz EC145 Eurocopter helicopter parked in front of a building with glass walls. Rotors are black with orange tips.

HELIPADS AND HELICOPTERS

Helipads on luxury yachts are commonplace.  Ondeck helipads no longer turn heads at the quay in Monaco.  The type of helicopter on the pad still garners envious gazes, however.

EBASE

Eurocopter premiered the first finished aircraft at this month’s EBACE 2011.  Only one year after unveiling the EC145 Benz concept airship, they did it again.  Last year’s European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE) was in Geneva.

WHAT IS THE EC145

Mercedes new helicopter is inspired by R-class high-end vehicles.  The twin-engine Mercedes Benz-style helicopter features a versatile interior. For instance, it is enabled by a modular approach . This allows it to be tailored to suit a range of travel needs for the well-heeled.  For example, taking the family for a weekend getaway in the Alps.  Other options might be taking celebrity clients to a St Barts yacht for New Year’s.
#helicopter

LUXURY MATERIALS AND FEATURES

The EC145 interior showcases Mercedes’ knowledge of luxury materials. It also showcases lighting for both luxury ambiance and German practicality.  This magic is created by Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studio in Como, Italy.

INTERIOR

Cockpit and cabin upholstery is available in a range. For instance, the usual top-shelf Benz materials and colors.  It is also offered in elegant woods for flooring and ceiling paneling. Ambient lighting is also available in various colors.  Mercedes uses this technologies in E and S-Class cars.

The EC145 Mercedes-Benz Style aircraft is not just about luxury but the effective and flexible use of space. It is the only he-lo in its class that can seat up to eight passengers. For the cabin layout, all seats are mounted on rails and can be quickly and easily reconfigured/removed for additional room for luggage. There are also multi-function boxes with features such as a mini-frig, cup holder and table, and 15-inch TV monitor and DVD player.

The aft-cabin features a high-capacity luggage compartment with room for baggage, golf clubs, even bicycles.

Like the R-Class models that inspired it, the Eurocopter EC145 Mercedes-Benz Style is the most versatile and spacious helicopter in its class.  Available 2011, this model will surely be onboard Virgin Island yacht charter vessels right away.

Best Airport for Caribbean Catamaran Yacht Charter

Posted on

QUESTION

“We live in the USA.  I’ve been told crewed catamaran charters are the best way to enjoy a yachting vacation in the Virgin Islands.  Do you have any suggestions as to the most convenient, best airports?     Jenny S.

ANSWER

Hi Jenny.  We are thrilled to hear about your plans – a travel writer once described a Caribbean sailing yacht charter as, “One of the top five vacations in the world!”

If you wish to explore the US Virgin Islands (USVI), then the Cyril E. King International Airport (airport code:  STT), in St.Thomas  is your best bet.

Photo of the Cyril E. King airport in St. Thomas, USVI.. The photo is taken from the parking lot toward the main building. There is a beautiful green mountain in the background.

ANSWER CONTINUES

Note:  There is also an airport in St. Croix, the Henry E. Rohlsen International Airport, St. Croix (STX). However, very few catamaran and sailboat rental companies operate from St. Croix, as there are very few calm anchorage areas.
So who flies into STT (St. Thomas)?  As to major airlines flying from the United States to Saint Thomas, Delta has flights to Saint Thomas Cyril E King, American Airlines has flights to STT Cyril E King, and US Airways has flights to Saint Thomas Cyril E King International Airport.  You’ll find both direct flights as well as connecting flights through San Juan, Puerto Rico in the Spanish Virgin Islands.

NOW WHAT?

Now that you know HOW to get there, here are three crewed catamaran sailing yachts available for charter in the Virgin Islands.Sunreef 70 catamaran MUSE

Fountaine Pajot Galathea 65 catamaran WORLD’S END

Lagoon 62 luxury yacht charter catamaran GO FREE
