Sustainability means avoiding depletion of natural resources to maintain an ecological balance. The push for sustainability in the yacht industry is a result.
A design studio is now building hybrid propulsion green luxury yacht charter super yachts.
GREEN STAR DESIGN
Guido de Groot Design and Intec Marine are proposing two revolutionary concepts for propulsion; as a result, they tout increased energy efficiency, lower noise, and CO2 emissions in boats. The Intec Marine hybrid propulsion concept uses electric propulsion; therefore using two generators. An additional smaller engine is used for calm water or at anchor.
GREEN STAR DESIGN IN USE
Take for example a Monaco Grand Prix yacht, rented to be dockside for the race. The boat then goes out cruising the Côte d’Azur. At cruising speed, one generator creates power for the two propulsion pods. It also powers the interior (cabin lights, televisions, galley, etc.). This results in very low noise levels, estimated at 35 dBA.
The batteries enable the yacht to cruise out of the marina at 6 knots. Simply start the redundant second generator for the yacht to reach maximum speed. The smaller, third generator runs at anchor.
HOW DOES GREEN STAR WORK?
Designers expect a 30% reduction of energy use as compared to a conventional setup. The setup uses three diesel engines continuously running (two for propulsion and one for interior load).
AWARD FOR GREEN STAR COMPLIANCE
Yachts featuring Intec Marine hybrid propulsion receive the RINA marine green star design certificate for environmental excellence.
Smartphones, tablets, and any handheld computers are the norm (versus desktop computers).
Those resistant to change are changing to adapt to technology. Everyone has access to computers and smartphones. This is regardless of his/her “station in life.”
Trends in smartphone technology for yacht charter
The “personal touch” between family, friends, businesses, and clients must receive direct focus in order to stay an important aspect of life. The “use it or lose it” belief is alive and well.
Handwritten communication is fading into the past. Without direct use and practice, it disappears. Schools no longer teach personalization in life. Technology has center stage. This is a blessing, for example, for technological medical advances. They move closer to cures ever day. Diagnosis, treatments, and surgeries are completely different than in the past. It is also a curse. Where is handwritten communication? Are face-to-face meetings no more?
Society in general is moving more toward caring for others. Pay It Forward, Practice Random Acts of Kindness, Help the environment, care about animals. Compassion is big.
People are stepping up to help others (and to keep others – and animals – from harm) in my experience. Companies are making more sustainable products and being more environmentally responsible.
All aspects of life are being directed toward recycling, reducing, and reusing….just loving the Earth and caring about our surroundings.
There’s a dramatic shift toward “Making a Difference.”
Back in April , we took a look at the problem of trash in luxury yacht charter marinas., We offered suggestions of things we can all do to make a difference in the fight to protect our natural resources and ultimate planetary health. It’s always reassuring to know that our voice is just one of many. This is evidenced by a wonderful article written by Angela Orecchio. Angela is a yacht stewardess, and she is also the author of the blog Savvy Stewardess. Angela outlines six ideas that can help reduce plastic onboard yachts.
THE STEW SUGGESTS
Much of what Angela suggests is particularly useful for people who own their own boats, and for bareboat yacht charter customers. Perhaps you’re not a boat owner. That’s ok – even guests onboard a fully-crewed private luxury yacht charter vessel will find some helpful ideas in Angela’s message.
Here’s a reprint of Angela’s story (with a few comments of our own):
6 SIMPLE WAYS TO REDUCE PLASTIC ONBOARD
“While I care a great deal about the environment, I’m just as guilty as anyone when it comes to buying plastic items for convenience.
Plastic is a major issue for the environment. Ocean Crusaders says there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic floating in our ocean. It also has this startling fact: 1 million seabirds die from plastic. I also read that we have no idea how long it takes for all of the plastic we consume to fully break down.
GREAT GARBAGE PATCH
Have you heard of the Great Garbage Patch floating in our ocean? It’s heartbreaking, yet there are things each of us can do daily to take care of the health of the planet.
RECYCLE
This is the last resort of reducing plastic. But it’s important. Start by talking to the captain about setting up a recycling program that works onboard. Create the specifics of the program and hold a meeting/training about it. Ensure that everyone knows what to do and how important recycling is. Designate one crew member to be in charge of making sure the program is successful.
One way to start recycling is to have a “non-recycle” bin for usual trash, and then one set up for plastic, paper and other recyclables. Designate the removal and proper distribution of the recycling to the watch keeper as part of his/her end-of-night duties.
WHAT TO RECYCLE
Double check on how and what to recycle as the yacht travels; it changes from place to place. If the port or marina where the yacht is docked does not have a recycling bin, first talk to the captain to get permission to meet with the yacht’s agent, DPA or dockmaster. Work with them to help set up a recycling program.
If they cannot help, reach out to the nearest recycling center. Either it can provide a recycling bin or someone there can identify where the nearest one is. If it’s a trip away, then potentially, this can be a bulk run done by one of the crew members when they go out every few days.
WATER BOTTLES
A lot of boats still buy cases of bottled water. Ask the engineer how water is filtered on board. If no one is sure if it’s potable, buy a water test kit and check it. If it’s not drinkable, get an external filter that sits under the sink in the crew mess and/or galley. Work with the engineer on what will work best for the boat. Reusable plastic water bottles are a better option than one-time-use plastic. Still, they become worn after a short time. I prefer a glass bottle with a rubber sleeve, which prevents the bottle from breaking.
1-800 YACHT CHARTERS OFFER
[1-800 Yacht Charters Comment: some bareboats, and almost all luxury yacht charter vessels, have state-of-the-art watermakers onboard, capable of generating hundreds of gallons of clean, fresh water during a charter vacation. 1-800 Yacht Charters offers reusable glass bottles in rubber sleeves to our charter clients, as a way to encourage them to forgo disposable plastic bottles during their vacation.]
Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters and 1-800 BAREBOAT with Eco-Hero Reusable Tote Bag
SHOPPING BAGS
Many countries no longer give out shopping bags at checkout for free. It is easy to build up a collection of long-lasting shopping bags. Just remember to put them back in the crew car or somewhere they won’t be forgotten. Reusable produce bags are great alternatives to the plastic ones found on the roll in the produce sections.
[1-800 Yacht Charters Comment: at the end of this blog we tell you how you can get a complimentary Eco-Hero tote bag. Read on!]
FOOD CONTAINERS
Most boats use Tupperware of some kind. This is a fantastic alternative to zip-top bags. Still, Tupperware tends to wear eventually, especially after being stained by food and multiple dishwasher runs. A great alternative to plastic Tupperware is glass or stainless steel. Many companies make durable glass Tupperware with lids that can go in the oven, microwave and dishwasher. While the lids are plastic, the base will last for many years.
RESEALABLE BAGS
Avoiding zip-top bags on a yacht can be quite tricky. They are so convenient and they don’t take up much room like rigid food containers. Still, they are plastic. Some alternatives are re-usable sandwich bags, stainless steel or glass containers, and muslin wrap. If zip-top bags are a must, wash them out and reuse them. Get organized and designate one location for clean-but-used bags for less than sterile needs.
STRAWS
Plastic one-use straws are easy to replace. There are so many alternatives out there, including metal, glass and multi-use plastic or silicone straws.”
Our thanks to Angela for doing her part to protect our oceans, and for spreading the word. We can all make a difference!
As fuel costs continue to rise, improving the energy efficiency of power generation on superyacht vessels has become a priority. Natural gas is a natural. Engine manufacturers are now working hand-in-hand with naval architects to ensure the next generation of the world’s largest yachts are more efficient than present day vessels.
“We see dual fuel engines as a developing trend; engines that can run on either natural gas or diesel fuel,” says Sheeder. “Converting an existing diesel engine to operate in a dual capacity is a fairly simple procedure. The biggest challenge for existing yachts is where to find room for the natural gas tank storage. This will be less of an issue for new-builds, as naval architects can design storage space at the inception.”
MANUFACTURERS USING NATURAL GAS IN YACHTS
Several manufacturers are already marketing gas conversion systems for Caterpillar generators, and Caterpillar, itself, is committed to build duel fuel engines for the future. Joel Feucht, an energy director at Caterpillar reports the company is, “All-in” on gas. “We are going to invest because we see a global market long term. Large engines are going gas. It’s not debatable; it’s our conclusion.”
What does a Virgin Island yacht charter crew do, when anchored offshore and the craving kicks in for a slice of pizza?
If you’re Tara and Sasha Bouis, you buy a derelict boat, gut the interior to install brick ovens, and open the first “Pizza Boat” in the US Virgin islands.
PIZZA PI
The floating “Pizza Pi” boat is anchored in Christmas Cove. Specifically, at the east end of St. Thomas, next to Great St. James Island. There are multiple ways to order. First, you can order your pizza via your boat’s radio, second, call it in via cell, or third, even e-mail it. There are 2 ways to pick up your order. Moreover, you can either pick up the pizza in your dinghy, or Pi will deliver it to you. Delivery occurs only if you’re anchored in Christmas Cove.
THE LOCATION
The specific location is perfect. In specific, both personal boats and private yacht charter vessels from St. John and St. Thomas are constantly passing through the cove. Even tourist-packed daytime sightseeing and snorkeling boats are taking a detour. They stop by the pizza boat for authentic New York style “pies.” Hence, the boat’s name, Pizza “Pi” – get it…the Greek letter “Pi”???
WHAT DID THEY DO BEFORE PIZZA PI?
Before opening Pizza Pi, Sasha was working on charter yachts as the captain and Tara was the chef.
The idea for the pizza boat came from a night at anchor, when Sasha and Tara were too tired to cook, and too tired to dinghy ashore to look for a take-out meal. They spent the night eating microwave popcorn and dreaming about how great it would be if there were a pizzeria on the water nearby.
THEIR JOURNEY CONTINUES
After eight years of working on charter vessels together, the couple found a 37 foot abandoned boat on the island of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. They spent two years restoring the boat and installing a commercial-grade pizza kitchen with brick ovens and a giant Hobart dough mixer. To run the appliances, Sasha and Tara outfitted the boat with solar panels. They financed the project with the money they saved from working on boat charters.
The couple took a week-long intensive course at a “Pizza school” in New York, to learn to make authentic thin crust pies.
BRING ON THE PIZZA
The pizza boat was “launched” about 9 months ago, and business has been steady. On an average day, they make about 25 pies. On a busy day, 30 to 40 boats stop by for a pizza. Sasha designed a hatch where people on dinghies can place orders and pick up their pies.
THE MENU
A banner displaying the menu hangs from the side of the boat.
Among the offerings:
• Sweet Home Indiana (sausage, corn, white sauce, and arugula)
• The Blumin Onion (made with lemon aioli instead of tomato sauce; leeks, radicchio, blue cheese, and honey)
• The Dalai Lama (a pizza with everything on it – the works)
Fresh ingredients like local Caribbean lobster can also be added as a topping.
HOW IS THE FOOD?
Currently, Pi is ranked as the best restaurant in St. Thomas on TripAdvisor. It has 59 five-star reviews and one four-star review. The person giving the boat a four-star review admitted the pizza is “delicious” but subtracted one star because they don’t deliver to her house on shore!
Trending ultra-green yachting continues. News of a decor option that smells a little fishy to us appears. Salmon skin upholstery!
ECO-FRIENDLY
Fuel-guzzling luxury mega yacht charter vessels are not eco-friendly modes of transportation. However, a growing number of yacht owners are taking steps to protect our oceans. They are building and refitting their vessels to “go green.”
CRUELTY-FREE
The latest of these is the use of salmon skin upholstery. Touted as an environmentally-friendly, cruelty-free decor option, it is suitable for superyacht interiors. Salmo Leather GmbH, is the leader in this business, creating leathers from the skins of salmon raised on certified organic fish-farms in Ireland. To illustrate, it looks similar to snakeskin, and salmon leather can be enjoyed guilt-free. It is beneficial in that it is not leather from endangered species.
NANAI
The company has named the product “Nanai.” This word is an homage to the salmon skin tanning techniques and traditions of the Eastern Siberian Nanai people. They have fished salmon on the Amur river for thousands of years.
IMAGINATION IN DESIGN
With its unsurpassed strength and versatility, coupled with its multi-dimensional character and wide variety of color choices, the possibilities nanai has to offer is only limited by the designer’s imagination. Having been certified for its remarkable tear and tensile strength and for its seam resistance, nanai is just as suitable for exquisite interior decorating and furnishing on virgin islands yacht charter vessels as it is for luxury handbags. The Stuart Weitzman Handbags Spring/Summer Collection 2011 features nanai on four of its new handbag models.
SUSTAINABLE
The skins are a by-product of the salmon industry. Fish are not specifically killed for their hides.
ETHICAL
Nanai is referred to by her creators as “a model of ethical elegance.” This is just one of many sustainable building and design materials in the yachting industry.
