OK, we’ll admit it – when Dee Kraley, manager of motor yacht SuRi, first invited us onboard the former oil rig supply boat, we were skeptical. Was it really possible to take an old ship built in 1978 by Halter Marine, cut her in half to extend her overall length from the middle, and transform her into a modern expedition yacht charter vessel?
WOW! AMAZING…
After two extensive rebuilds and a 2016 refit, the answer is a resounding, “YES!” The “old supply ship” is indeed one of the most luxurious charter yachts available in her size and price category.
WHAT HAS CHANGED ON MOTORYACHT SURI
Adding 11 meters to her overall length significantly boosted her volume, both indoors and on deck.
ADVENTURE AHEAD
Yet more impressive than her transformation is her owner’s commitment to creating the ultimate adventure travel vessel in the charter market.
ULTIMATE WATERSPORTS CENTER
While most superyachts carry a respectable inventory of watersports gear, this yacht takes it to another level – with multiple tenders, a helicopter, seaplane, jet skis, hoverboard, scuba diving equipment, quadskis, and so much more. Twenty (20) active, athletic crewmembers add to the neverending fun, excitement, and adventure enjoyed by charter guests.
WHERE IS SURI BASED?
So where do you base a yacht filled-to-the-brim with toys? It must be a destination with endless opportunities for exploration and water-themed adventure. The answer? The South Pacific and the islands of Fiji, French Polynesia, and Indonesia.
FAVORITE ANCHORAGE
A favorite anchorage for yacht SuRi and her charter guests are the islands of Raja Ampat, an archipelago of 1500 islands located off the northwest tip of New Guinea. Marine life thrives here, and the bio-diversity is unlike anywhere else in the world – with hundreds of species of corals and reef fish, along with whales, dolphins, and giant rays.
YACHT VIDEO OF SUPERYACHT SURI
Check out this amazing action-packed yacht charter video of motoryacht SuRi and her onboard guests enjoying the breathtaking beauty of Raja Ampat:
Come enjoy The Superyacht Experience onboard motor yacht SuRi. Available summer 2018 in French Polynesia and Fiji, and priced at $350,000 per week (plus operating expenses like food and fuel) for up to 12 guests. Click HERE for further information…
DOES TOM CRUISE OWN SURI?
WHAT’S IN A NAME? No, she is not owned by Tom Cruise or Katie Holmes or daughter, Suri. Her name, SuRi, is the combination of her owners’ first names. Just in case you were wondering… 😉
The saying goes, “up the creek without a paddle.” But what about without a rudder?
CIRCULAR WATERTOY
A British company is hoping their invention will catch on with boaters. Additionally, the yachting community surely likes the idea. What is it? A rudderless saucer-like watertoy called a “Circraft.”
JAMES BOND BOAT
It is round, revolutionary, and radical. The aquatic flying saucer is first, partJames Bond boatand second, part personal watercraft. It is similar to a waverunner or jetski.
NO RUDDER?
Aside from its appearance, what makes this new watertoy truly unique is the lack of a rudder for steering. Directional control comes from the operator leaning to one side or the other – lean left go left, lean right and theCircraftwill do the same.
HOW TO STOP
Want to stop? Simply flip the throttle to neutral and the saucer will glide to a halt (and like a waverunner or jetski, a safety cut-out cord connects the outboard to driver for safety in the event of any mishap).
CIRCULAR SPEED
Powered by a small outboard engine, the Circraft can hit maximum speeds of 40 mph and can carry one to two riders.
BENETTI YACHTS FOR CHARTER
Will we see charter vessels like Benetti motor yacht DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER or the highly-popular James Bond motor yacht CASINO ROYALE replace their conventional waverunners with the Circraft? There are compelling reasons charter vessels may wish to add these water-saucers to their aquasports inventory.
“Personal watercraft are restricted from use in many destinations; for example, passengers on a Virgin Islands Yacht Charter are often frustrated to learn the waverunners on their rented yacht may not be used in the British Virgin Islands. The Circraft is rated as a Category C vessel, similar to a motorized tender, and doesn’t carry the same restrictions that hinder the use of waverunners and jetskis by charter guests.”
CIRCRAFT PRICE
Priced from £5,000 (about $7900) plus tax for the boat with 20hp outboard and customized trailer, they are comparable, if not cheaper, in price to most waverunners.
Wow. Can it be? The BP Deepwater Horizons oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was five years ago.
Many of us make a living from the sea. Therefore, the memories of millions of gallons of crude oil spewing into the Gulf is still fresh in our minds. We are private yacht charter consultants. Subsequently, we look for every opportunity to promote sustainability. Additionally, we focus on environmental awareness for our clients.
SCIENTISTS IN AUSTRALIA
That’s why we were thrilled to read a recent report from a team of researchers at Australia’s Deakin University. These scientists claim to have found an effective solution to clean up a major oil spill at sea.
Subsequently, they developed a special porous material that can soak up to 33 times its own weight in oil and organic solvents.
BORON NITRIDE POWDER
About two years ago, the researchers developed a boron nitride powder which they named, “White graphite.” The powder exhibited strong oil-absorption properties. From there, they developed a sponge containing the boron nitride powder. They broke the powder down into thin nanosheets, consisting of tiny flakes measuring only several nanometers in thickness. The flakes have tiny, microscopic holes that serve to increase the sponge’s surface area per gram to the size of five and a half tennis courts.
“The pores in the nanosheets provide the surface area to absorb oils and organic solvents up to 33 times its own weight.”
So cites Dr. Weiwei Lei, lead researcher for the University’s team.
In addition, the sponge material is said to be flame-resistant.
DEAKIN RESEARCH
The Deakin researchers are now looking for industry partners to begin trialing the technology, with the hopes it can be adapted to form ultra-light aerogels and membranes to clean up large-scale ocean oil spills. With any luck at all, the idea of a Florida yacht charter vacation being postponed or cancelled due to a nearby oil spill might become a problem of the past.
It was always fun to watch the famous space cartoon, The Jetsons, and imagine what it would be like in the future — transporting in rapidly moving little flying vehicles, getting ready in the morning by hopping on a conveyor belt and being automatically coiffed and dressed, and racing around wearing rocket-powered backpacks.
If you think about it, some of those wild cartoonish theories are seemingly becoming realities!
Flying cars DO now exist, although they are not yet mass produced.
Conveyor belts DO now exist, although they have not been perfected to prepare us in the mornings.
…and jetpacks DO now exist, although they were first seen in James Bond 007 movies as gadgets…and they now appear on Mediterranean yacht charter superyachts as the latest and greatest watersports toy!
Move over, Elroy!
The future I dreamed of as a child is finally here!
Excuse me, but I have to go feed my dog, Astro…
