Ask the Yacht Charter Pros: How to Pay Less VAT (Tax) on a France Yacht Charter Vacation?

Posted on

“I’m planning a 10 day private yacht charter in St. Tropez and the South of France in July. My broker say VAT is 20%. That’s seems a lot. Is there way to not pay this?”
Xavier E, Barcelona, Spain

Answer provided by Jana Sheeder, President 1-800 Yacht Charters:

“The bad news, Xavier, is all charters that take place in a European Union (EU) country are subject to VAT (Value Added Tax). However, we have good news as well – there is a simple, legal strategy that can cut your VAT expense in half.

Instead of paying 20%, this strategy will reduce your VAT to 10% of your base charter fee – a significant savings!

VAT EU logo yacht charter france
Each EU country can set their own level of VAT on commercial yachts for hire. In France, if the yacht undertakes a coastal cruise in French territorial waters, the VAT is 20% of the base charter fee (the base fee is the cost to rent the yacht before factoring in other running expenses such as food, dockage, etc.). So, for example, if you began your charter in Saint Tropez, and cruised along the Côte d’Azur and concluded your trip in Antibes, you would incur a VAT expense of 20%.

However, IF you plan a portion of your charter to cruise in international waters, your legal responsibility for VAT drops to 10% – a savings of 50%!

So how do you do this? Here’s how: When you are planning your itinerary with the yacht’s captain prior to the commencement of your charter, let the captain know that you would like to, “visit a port that requires you to cruise in international waters and beyond the coast of France.”

You could, for example, leave the French coast and cruise to the island of Sardinia. This is approximately a 5-7 hour cruise from the South of France.

{TIP: ask your captain to undertake this crossing overnight, while you and your guests are sleeping. Then, when you rise in the morning, you’ll be able to spend a full day, or longer along the coastline of this fabled Italian island before heading back to France}.

So there you have it – with a little strategic planning, a slight deviation in your St Tropez yacht charter can result in big savings; possibly thousands of Euros depending upon the cost of your charter.”

In the evenings, the yachts are often the site of sponsored product-placement cocktail parties.

Build Team, Owner Reflect On Motor Yacht JOY, New Feadship Yacht Charter

Posted on

What do you get when you merge the vision of a new yacht owner who has never owned a boat, with the talents of Europe’s leading design studios and Holland’s premier yacht builder?

The answer is the radically-styled 70 meter Feadship motor yacht JOY.

Launched in July,  the latest creation by the craftsmen at Feadship Royal Dutch Shipyards, superyacht JOY was built for a young American owner from New York. Amazingly, it is not only the first yacht he has ever built – it is the first yacht he has ever owned.

Joy yacht aft

Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters, commented on how the owner’s lack of involvement in the yachting industry led to the creation of a unique vessel, unlike any other yacht in the 70 meter range: “You take an ambitious, youthful person, who has no pre-conceived bias as to what is expected when you design and build a superyacht, and you open the door to a fresh perspective on how a yacht can reflect the owner’s vision of what The Superyacht Experience can be.”

At the commencement of the project, the owner’s brief was simple and clear, and brimming with the optimism of youth:  “Create something totally different to every other yacht.”

Recognizing the need to bring a fresh approach to the entire project, Feadship reached out to designers never before retained.  For the avant-garde exterior, they turned to the design studio of Bannenberg & Rowell.  Interior architecture was assigned to Studio Indigo. Visually, superyacht JOY looks like no other. The wide walkways and flow between the interior and exterior spaces are without precedent on superyachts of this size. Dickie Bannenberg commented, “You will see there are a lot of sculpted and rather complex surfaces that give the design a very unique look.”

Feadship JOY in the factory on launch day

Of course, crafting the  fascinating concave shapes in the yacht’s superstructure presented challenges to the builder.  At the launch ceremony, Feadship director Jan-Bart Verkuy said, “(motor yacht ) JOY was an incredibly complicated boat to build with so many shapes and lines. We are very grateful to the fairing gods at Feadship and all the other craftsmen who have showcased their skills on such a unique boat.”

The proud new owner was equally pleased by the results of the challenging build.  “Studio Indigo has worked amazingly hard to produce such a gorgeous design with an incredible focus on detail. I’m also delighted with Bannenberg & Rowell’s sleek and progressive profile that reflects my desire to go forward into the future.”

With a yacht name reflecting the owner’s joyous enthusiasm for life and the opportunities for self-growth and exploration that only time aboard a yacht can bring, the owner reflected on a recent visit he made to New York’s Central Park. “When I saw the statue of Columbus it reminded me of how much joy this explorer felt when he first saw land. Today is my moment of joy as something I have long dreamt about has come to light. I’m incredibly happy and sincerely grateful to Feadship and all the other team members who made this happen.”

For her part, Sheeder is thrilled to have the opportunity to promote this yacht to her clients seeking wellness yacht charters. “The mix of spa-like amenities is amazing, from the Jacuzzi sun deck, to the massage room, to the ocean-level beach club. Where else can you exercise in a gym with panoramic views of the sea, and then rest and reflect in a minimalist interior with textures and colors designed to invoke feelings of tranquility and wellness?”

“In a sea of cookie-cutter designed boats, this is a transcendent yacht that will quickly set a new standard in the charter market.”

Catamaran RAFOLY – Golf and Sail Spain

Posted on

A NEW YACHT CHARTER IDEA

Catamaran Rafoly presents an exciting and fun yacht charter vacation option.  The Blubay 92 catamaran  will cruise the waters of Spain’s Balearic Islands.   Mallorca has some of Europe’s finest championship golf courses.  Mallorca is the largest of the Spanish.

WHAT IS INCLUDED

The yacht’s own golf pro helps guests select courses and make all arrangements during the 6 night charter, and the package includes 3 complimentary green fees.

In addition to the golf component of the trip, the package also includes airport transfers, all food and beverages (including ship’s bar), and use of the yachts onboard watersports inventory.

COMPANY PRESIDENT COMMENT

Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters and SailAway Yacht Charter Consultants, feels this package will have great appeal to golfers and non-golfers, alike.

Most golf-oriented vacations focus primarily on the golfer,”  says Sheeder.  “By adding a golf element to a yachting vacation, the non-golfers can have just as much fun as the golfers. We envision a group of 3 or 4 heading to the links, while others in the charter party go for an afternoon sail, or stop and anchor for a swim.”

Sheeder emphasizes that the location is what makes this package special.  “The Balearics are to Spain what the Côte d’Azur is to France.  There are numerous cafes, upscale boutiques, and nightclubs, and plenty of small coves where you can anchor and be away from the crowds.”

CATAMARAN RAFOLY OFFERS MULTIPLE COURSES

Golfers can hone their skills on any of 7 courses:

ACCOMMODATIONS

Launched in 2008, RAFOLY is a 92-foot luxury yacht charter catamaran, with accommodations for up to 8 passengers in 4 staterooms. She is a high class sail mega yacht, elegant and refined, and made for cruising with one’s friends and family on a vacation of a lifetime.

CBS Amazing Race Showcases Latest Private Yacht Charter Watertoy

Posted on

The requirement for cutting-edge watertoys onboard private yacht charter vessels is nothing new.  There’s an ongoing battle between charter yacht owners to make sure their yacht has better toys than their competitor; hence the inclusion of jet packs, personal submarines, waterslides, and flying saucer-style waverunners.

Now, a piece of exercise equipment found in nearly every superyacht gym – the stationary exercise bicycle – has crossed over to join the long list of “must-have” watertoys.

Engineered for the water, the Schiller S1 water bike merges modern design, technology, and engineering, to deliver a stationary workout bicycle in an aquatic environment. Why stay cooped-up in a yacht’s gym, riding a stationary bike, when you can do your biking outdoors, on the water?

Fans of television’s, “The Amazing Race” on CBS, saw the Schiller S1 in action in the season premiere, as contestants peddled from Marina del Rey to Burton Chase Park in Los Angeles, California.

Two girls pedaling water bikes in a marina

Upon first glance, the S1 looks large and bulky, until you realize the pontoons that keep it afloat and provide stability are inflatable.  In fact, the unit folds down to 3 cubic feet and only weighs 60 pounds – compact and light enough for any deckhand to carry and place the S1 near the swim platform for the use of the charter guests.

A drive train attached to the pedals connects to a small propeller.  The company reports a good rider can achieve a speed of 5 miles per hour.

Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters, believes eco-conscious travelers will appreciate this “green” watertoy.  “We’re committed to increasing the eco-friendly yachting options we can offer our clients,” says Sheeder. “So many travelers are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint both at home and while on vacation.”  Sheeder continues, “The Schiller S1 waterbike is quiet, sustainable, and human-powered.  It’s part of a new generation of watertoys that merge the pleasures of a yachting vacation with the responsibilities of protecting our marine environment.

Sheeder concludes with a smile, “…and as we saw on the season premiere of The Amazing Race, it’s a lot of fun!

Enjoy the ultimate green vacation on a fully-crewed Virgin Islands catamaran yacht charter this winter. Catamaran sailboats are roomy, stable, loaded with watertoys, and utilize the clean energy of the wind to cruise through the water.  For more information, email info@1800YachtCharters.com, submit an online inquiry form, or call us at +1-800-YACHTCHARTERS (922-4824) or +305-720-7245, 24 hours.

Crossing the Pond – the Preferred Superyacht Transport Option

Posted on

Aerial photograph of a ship that transports superyachts. It is headed down a canal, and there is a tugboat next to it. There are buildings in the background, as if the ship is pulling in to a city.

Dockwise Yacht Express Superyacht Transport

Earlier this week, the 686-foot (209 meter) Yacht Express, the flagship of Dockwise Yacht Transport’s (DYT) fleet of semi-submersible ships, pulled into Ft. Lauderdale.  Onboard was a record breaking cargo of boats and luxury yacht charter vessels valued collectively at $270,341,000.   The gray and orange-colored super ship took a berth at Port Everglades and began an hours-long de-ballasting process that allowed sea water to flood its dock bay.  By early evening,  19 state-of-the-art luxury yachts safely motored out the back and into the waters of South Florida.

The largest of the vessels to off-load was Trinity motor yacht MI SUENO #skyfall .  The 190’ (57.91 meter) megayacht had loaded on to Yacht Express in Genoa, Italy on October 6. She had just returned from the Monaco Yacht Show and was delivered to South Florida to enter the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

Captain Glynn Smith explained the reason the 190′  Trinity yacht charter vessel is delivered via  transport ship:  “The reason that Mi Sueno is shipped must be credited to the yacht’s owner who really knows how to look after his crew and boat.  The crew needs time off after such a busy Mediterranean yacht charter season, and shipping…gives us that option.”

Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters, further explains how wear and tear on a yacht during the Atlantic crossing is avoided by using a transport ship.

“A typical Atlantic crossing can add 400 to 500 hours on a yacht’s engines and generators, not to mention unforeseen incidents that might occur in the middle of the ocean.”

Several of the other yachts on Yacht Express have shipped with DYT multiple times, including the 163’ (49.70 meter) motor yacht CASINO ROYALE, the 160’ (48.78 meter) ODESSA (four times each), the 161’ (49.09 meter) ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM (seven times), and the 132 foot (40.24 meter) motor yacht MISS ROSE.

DYT had a second transport arrive from the Mediterranean this week. The ship Super Servant 4, arrived in Ft. Lauderdale on Friday from Palma de Mallorca, Spain, fully loaded with 24 yachts totaling $190,000,000 in value. Some of the sailboats were offloaded, bound for St. Thomas, USVI, in time for the Caribbean charter season.

Expect Tax Hike On Your Virgin Islands Yacht Charter Vacation

Posted on

Doing any boating this spring in the Virgin Islands?  If you are, plan on bringing a few extra bucks with you (or…take a money-saving tip from our company President, Jana Sheeder).

Photograph of Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters

This will be the first spring yachting season since the BVI enacted new legislation in 2017, increasing cruising taxes.

Here’s a breakdown of both the previous and current fees:

  • OLD (Seasonal Rates):  $.75 – $2 USD per person per day
  • NEW (Flat, Year-Round Rate): $6 USD per person per day

These rates apply to Virgin Islands yacht charter vessels registered and based in the British side of the territory.  “Foreign”  based yachts – meaning charter yachts coming in from other bases such as the US Virgin Islands and elsewhere — will also see an increase – from $4 to $16 per person per day.

HELPFUL TIPJana Sheeder, our company President, suggests,

“When planning your Virgin Islands yacht charter vacation, ask your charter broker to present yachts ‘based’ in the British (BVI) side of the territory if possible, as opposed to those based in St . Thomas (USVI) or elsewhere.  This small tip can save you 63% in extra cruising fees!!!”

A complete explanation of the tax increase is available on the official  British Virgin Islands website.

Food For Naut: Caterer Finds Niche In Caribbean Yacht Charter Market

Posted on

You are the chef onboard a St. Barts yacht charter vessel, and your guests have asked you to create a lavish meal at sea with hard-to-find ingredients.  Where do you turn?

The answer is a specialty food supplier such as The Grateful Palate.

Since 2009, the South Florida-based caterer has offered provisions to discerning customers in the nautical industry.  From their 10,000 square foot distribution center in the Fort Lauderdale area, the provisioning company has always sourced and shipped food items, toiletries, and other premium goods to chefs and crew on mostly Caribbean and Bahamas yacht charter vessels.  They have also serviced private yachts as well.
Photograph of a beautiful entree on a plate, served in front of a water glass and wine glasses. An elegant dining table. Wine and water glasses are blurred in background of photo that is a yellow hueThe company has always specialized in working with clients seeking custom orders of the highest-quality products.  Expectations have always been high, as charter chefs need items delivered fresh and on time to specific destinations.
But, sadly, The Grateful Palate is no more…..until the Fall of 2014, when they reopen in a larger facility so that they can continue servicing their discriminating clientele!
According to owner Meghan Leckey, being able to meet customers’ demands and deliver the goods resulted in a strong repeat clientele and the company’s continued growth. She said, that it was “…a growing business that [has] picked up substantially over the years.”
For Passover this year, Leckey’s company supplied a 200-foot Virgin Islands yacht charter vessel in St. Thomas with kosher meats, sodas, dry goods, and ceremonial supplies for the religious holiday. It also sent specialty kosher caviar flown in from Paris.
Leckey feels she understands the needs of the owners and crews of the world’s largest yachts
“The secrets of our success are, first of all, really understanding the amazing level of quality demanded by the wealthiest yacht owners in the world and, secondly, anticipating everything the crew will need for the trip,” said Leckey. “There is no other industry in the world that demands this level of attention to quality, from Beluga caviar to toilet paper (as the luxury yacht charter industry), and few other companies in the world that can meet those expectations.”

The company, as does 1-800 Yacht Charters, relies on customer referrals to spread the word. “We thrive on good remarks, and repeat business is key in this specialized industry,” Leckey said.

President of 1-800 Yacht Charters, Jana Sheeder, could not agree more.
WE LOVE REFERRALS!
