As I gaze at the deck of MS TÛRANOR, covered in solar panels, I wonder how and if the yacht charter industry will embrace solar powered luxury yachts.
The MS TÛRANOR, also know as yacht PLANETSOLAR, is a pioneer for sustainable energy technology on water. She is on an around-the-world tour. She is unlike any current luxury mega yacht charter vessel, This amazing catamaran is a 31-meter multihull. She is topped by a large array of photovoltaic solar panels. Built in 14 months, the biggest solar boat ever built has impressive dimensions and is yet both silent and clean.
Imagine a charter in the sunny Mediterranean, cruising from port to port without burning expensive fuels and oils.
Solar enables you to slide along like a sailboat, for example, versus the constant drone of engines and some nauseating odors of diesel fuel. Being propelled by pollution-free electrical engines is a dream.
In addition, eliminating fossil fuel greatly reduces carbon dioxide CO2 emissions. This is an important step for this industry. Yachting needs to project a greater commitment to protecting our oceans and environment.

MS TURANOR – AKA PLANETSOLAR
We recently welcomed the largest solar-powered boat in the world, MS TÛRANOR. She came to our hometown of Miami, FL. As a result, she made the trip in sixteen months and nearly 30,000 miles. The world’s largest catamaran powered by the sun is nearing the end of her epic, round-the-world odyssey.
She is a pioneer for sustainable energy technology on water. The German-made 115-foot catamaran is MS TÛRANOR. She is also known as yacht PLANETSOLAR. The yacht arrives in Monaco on May 4th – the first superyacht to circumnavigate the world on solar power alone.
A celebration weekend happens in the Hercule harbor in Monaco. After crossing the finish line, the crew, design team, builders, investors and owners will be participating in an official arrival ceremony with Swiss and Monegasque personalities. Several events support the festivities.
Raphaël Domjan of Switzerland conceived PlanetSolar. MS Tûranor’s build is from Kiel, Germany. Solar energy exclusively powers the boat. It draws power from 537 square meters of photovoltaic panels. PlanetSolar is behind many technological advances, especially in the field of composite manufacturing and storage of solar energy.

Back in December, we posed the question: Will the yacht charter industry embrace solar-powered luxury yachts, and if so, when?
At the time, the largest solar-powered boat in the world, MS TÛRANOR, had just arrived here in Miami, FL. The MS TÛRANOR, also known as yacht PLANETSOLAR is a pioneer for sustainable energy technology on water. She is currently underway on a global circumnavigation.
The vessel is unlike any current luxury mega yacht charter vessel. Catamaran PLANETSOLAR is a 31-meter multlihull covered by an array of photovoltaic solar panels. Sliding along like a sailboat – the vessel is propelled by pollution-free electrical engines.
Just one month later, there is further evidence that solar powered superyacht technology is moving ahead.
Currently in pre-production, the 144 ft OCEAN EMPIRE will be the first solar hybrid superyacht. She will feature two hydroponic farms and fishing facilities to harvest the sea.
As a superyacht, LSV OCEAN EMPIRE will liberate the industry from its strict dependence on unsustainable resources by harnessing the renewable collective power ever present in the Earth’s Biosphere.
Ocean Empire is the hopeful forerunner to crewed catamaran charters of the future. Her build is a state-of-the-art mega catamaran with the ultimate carbon neutrality. Her solar hybrid design will offer every available luxury within her full range of operation which extends from a 50% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, to ultra-green carbon neutral and zero carbon cruising.
As a charter vessel, with staterooms for 10 guests, she will be capable of feeding over 360 megawatts of electricity to the grid. That equates to enough energy to make up to 12,000 nautical miles of carbon neutral voyages every year.
