Luxury Yacht Charter Maven Reflects on Industry in 2013

Posted on

THE YACHT CHARTER MAVEN COMMENTS

Many of her clients are still onboard their yachts enjoying their 2013 year-end St Barts yacht charter vacations.  Jana Sheeder, President and Co-owner of SailAway Yacht Charters and 1-800 Yacht Charters comments. She takes a few minutes to reflect on the year that was (and offers us a glimpse of what’s to come in 2014.

Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters standing with yacht Vertige female crewmember on dock in front of boat. Jana wearing halter long dress and gold name badge, and crewmember wearing short black skirt and white short-sleeved shirt.

Q:  The charter industry still seems to be recovering from the global economic downturn of the past couple years.  Did 2013 represent an uptick in the volume of charter business?

Sheeder:  “Our research indicates 2013 showed significant improvement in charter revenues when compared to both 2011 and 2012.  Many newly-built yachts enter the  charter marketplace in 2013.  These are builds that had stalled while under construction during the height of the downturn.  As the global economy began to pick up, delayed construction projects commenced.

The result is a beautiful new fleet of superyacht charter vessels that hit the seas in time for the 2013 summer Mediterranean charter season.”

Q:  Did the year end on an uptick?

Sheeder:  “We haven’t seen any industry data yet, so we can’t speak for our competitors.  We can tell you in terms of the Caribbean yacht charter marketplace,  SailAway (1-800 Yacht Charters) had its strongest December in over 3 years. While the inquiries for smaller vessels did not grow, our bookings of superyachts – some of the largest yachts in the world –  increased significantly.

Presently, we have the two largest charter vessels currently docked in St Barts for 9 night charters – motor yacht LAUREL (240 feet, $525,000 per week) and the Lurssen yacht charter motoryacht MARTHA ANN (230 feet, 600,000 EUROS per week).”

ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS

Superyacht Laurel underway. Navy blue hull and white superstructure. There is a mountain in the distance behind her. She is headed toward the lower left side of the photograph.

Q:  What was the biggest change you witnessed in 2013 in the charter industry?

Sheeder:  “I would have to say the ending of VAT exempt charters in France. For many years, our clients enjoyed St. Tropez yacht charters and summer vacations along the Cote d’Azur, free of the burden of VAT.  That all changed in the summer of 2013 when the French yacht charter VAT went into effect.   As of July 15, 2013, charterers can expect to pay an additional 9.8% for their Côte d’Azur yacht charter.”

Q:  Are you optimistic as you look ahead to 2014?

Sheeder:  “Our team is extremely optimistic as we focus on incremental growth in 2014. During the economic downturn, while many of our competitors hunkered down to ride out the storm, we took a contrarian approach.  We focused our efforts on increased marketing. Our strategy was simple – stay in touch with existing clients and prospects. We wanted to be “easy to find” once the economy turned around.

Internally, we call it our “Tip of the Tongue” project.  Clients had tightened their belts during the downturn, and we were committed to be the brand they remembered (always on the tip of the tongue) when they were ready to loosen their discretionary income belts again!

FINAL THOUGHTS

Now that 2014 is here, we are excited to announce that, for instance

  • Our newly-designed website is nearing completion
  • We are launching a new subsidiary to provide luxury yacht tenders to megayacht owners
  • Our additional satellite offices are opening
  • We are focused on charitable causes — helping others, helping marine life, and helping the environment — Paying it Forward and Making a Difference for all that’s been given to us!

The sky’s the limit!  It will be an exciting, challenging, and awe-inspiring year!”

CARIBBEAN NEW YEAR

The tiny island nation of St Barts once again played host to multiple people and boats. For instance, celebrities, business icons, and the world’s largest yachts to celebrate New Year’s Eve 2011.

PARTY HOST

With fireworks bursting overhead, many revelers made their way to the £59 million island estate of Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich for his annual party.  It is estimated to cost £5 million (about $7.7 million US Dollars).  The star-studded event featured a live performance by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

MOTORYACHT ECLIPSE

Many stayed on the Russian’s 536 foot superyacht ECLIPSE – the world’s largest private yacht with two helicopter pads, a submarine, and two swimming pools.  Other yachts anchored in the harbor or along the quay included the 377 foot motor yacht LUNA,  Feadship yacht charter motor yacht DREAM, and Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen motor yacht TATOOSH.

Mango Mango Yacht Services Provides Key Support to Luxury Yacht Charter Vessels

Posted on

MANGO²

Kevin Lawrie calls himself a “Facilitator.”  Some superyacht captains have a more fitting moniker for him:  “Miracle Man.

Since 2015, Lawrie has operated Mango Mango Yacht and Villas Services, on the island of St Barts in the Caribbean.

WHO IS MANGO?

Lawrie is a yacht agent, a rather non-descriptive title.  He is an integral participant in most private luxury yacht charter trips passing through the Caribbean. For example, St Barts and other nearby ports of call (e.g. Nevis, St Kitts, Anguilla, etc.) need him. A yacht agent’s services include assistance with immigration and port services.  They also include banking, provisioning, and charter guest and yacht crew concierge services.  Lastly, they make medical arrangements and purchase yacht parts.

Kevin Lawrie, Mango-Mango yacht facilitator

YACHT SERVICES

Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters, explains the vital role yacht agencies like Mango Mango play in the yacht charter industry.

“Our responsibility is to deliver The Superyacht Experience™ to our clients,” says Sheeder. “The hiring of the yacht is just one component of a successful charter.  Our goal is to use the yacht as the platform to deliver an unequalled and flawless vacation for our clients.  While the captains of the yachts are responsible to create an itinerary for the clients, it is often the yacht agent who coordinates the logistics for the yacht before it arrives at a particular destination.”

WHAT CAN THE MANGO TEAM DO FOR YOU?

They can

  • First, arrange dockage for a yacht days before arrival in St Barts.  Once in port, assist the crew in clearing the charter guests through customs
  • Second, order provisions.  Crews will often send Lawrie a list of provisions requested by the onboard guests, and Lawrie will make arrangements for these items to be delivered to the yacht
  • Third, organize onshore activities.  Captains will call Lawrie before arrival with a list of activities the charter guests wish to enjoy while in St. Barts

YACHT CHARTER MAVEN / PRESIDENT COMMENTS

“A captain and his crew need to focus on the safe operation of the yacht while the charter guests are onboard,” explains Sheeder. “You don’t want a captain or the crew spending time on the phone or Internet trying to organize sighstseeing tours, arranging dockage, or making restaurant reservations.”

YACHT AGENT EXPERTISE

This is where Lawrie and Mango Mango excel.  Many important details are handled by yacht agents.  When performed well, it’s a seamless, professional process – invisible to the charter guests.  All the charter guests see is an empty slip in a marina, ready for their arrival.  As they disembark, a driver is standing by, with a car or limousine – ready to take them where they want to go.  There’s no need for charter guests to stand in line at the local customs office, because Lawrie has already cleared the passengers, using passport details forwarded to him via email by the yacht’s captain.  Fuel and fresh provisions will be delivered to the yacht, so when the charter guests are ready to depart for the next port of call, the yacht and crew are ready to go.

YACHT OWNERS REACH OUT

Many times, a yacht owner who normally keeps his/her yacht in the Mediterranean will decide to re-position to the Caribbean for the winter season.  Often, the crews of these yachts are not familiar with the islands of the Caribbean, and are at a loss when it comes to necessary yacht services – fuel bunkering, entry requirements, foreign currency exchanges, etc.   For these yachts and crew, Lawrie is truly a miracle worker.  Sheeder points out, “Not only does Kevin handle the typical yacht services, he’s available 24/7 for the little things that seem to pop up out of nowhere.  If a crewmember suddenly breaks a tooth, Kevin will jump right in and secure an emergency appointment with a local dentist.”

YACHT OFFICER COMMENTS

Scott Macahonic, Chief Officer of M/Y Spirit understands the value of a local yacht agency like Mango Mango:

We have used Kevin numerous times over the last two seasons in St.Barths, and I can’t even tell you the number of ‘potential guest situations’ he has gotten us out of! New Year’s eve table reservations, 20 person taxi with no warning, coconuts immediately, fresh fish when needed. You name it…he’s helped us always in a professional, quick and friendly manner. We will definitely be using him the next time we can get back to the beautiful island of St.Barths.”

VILLA SERVICES

Mango Mango has expanded their services to also include villas. They provide:

  • Villa Management
    • Arrangement & coordination of all contractors (pool, garden, plumbing, electric)
    • Administration & payment of all accounts & services for the villa
    • Housekeeping, chefs, babysitting & personal security services
    • Meet & Greet at the airport / yacht / ferry
    • Freshest products provisioning
    • Exclusive concierge services

ST BARTS OPEN-4-BUSINESS

While recent hurricanes Irma and Maria brought much destruction to the Caribbean including St Barts, Lawrie states the island is up and running and ready for visitors.

“St Barts is effectively open for business this winter season,” says Lawrie, “and we would love to see you down here and we can promise that it will be a memorable season offering you the same level of professionalism as usual and you will be welcomed with open arms and a warm smile wherever you go ashore.”

Well said, Miracle Man!

Seakeepers Yacht Owners Protect Oceans

Posted on

Logo for Seakeepers Ocean Protection Society

SEAKEEPERS AT WORK

SeaKeepers, a group of yacht owners, has an innovative option: a specially-designed sensing system for measuring sea changes.  The 70th annual Miami International Boat Show is set to take place this week. Many of the superyachts in Miami will offer plenty of luxury features, from hot tubs to helipads.

INNOVATION IN YACHTING

But a select few of the luxury yacht charter vessels in town for the show will boast an innovative option that allows owners do a little something good for the planet as their yachts cruise the playgrounds of the rich famous.

Many SeaKeepers yachts have sensing systems that automatically collect ocean and weather readings and stream them to worldwide scientists.

One of the SeaKeeper vessels, the $58 million motor yacht BIG FISH, owned by Hong Kong-based millionaire Richard Beattie, is in the midst of a polar circumnavigation, the first attempted by a private vessel.

Photograph of motoryacht BIG FISH underway, heading left and down to corner of photo

WHO OWNS LARGEST YACHTS?

Owners of some of the world’s largest yachts are members, including Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, Prince Khaled Bin Sultan, a member of Saudi Arabia’s royal family, publisher Steve Forbes, and Miami Heat and Carnival Cruise Lines owner, Micky Arison.

WHERE DID SEAKEEPERS ORIGINATE?

In 1998, yacht owners in Monaco discussed climate change, then they formed the nonprofit.  They then created a system so yachts could do oceanic research.

The SeaKeeper 1000, monitoring system cost millions of dollars. It was donated by the group’s founding members, scientists, and engineers at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. The system measures temperature, salinity, oxygen and acid in the ocean. It also gathers weather readings.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO PROTECT THE OCEAN?

The Seakeepers fight to protect the oceans, and as quoted by the Marine Conservation Institite,

“the ocean is the largest ecosystem on Earth. Living oceans absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and reduce climate change impact.”

The Hot New Trends in Superyacht Fashion 2021

Posted on

HAUTE COUTURE IS OUT — URBAN IS IN

The Winter/Fall superyacht charter season has arrived. Fortunately, most island destinations have lifted their travel bans.  The luxury superyacht charter fleet is making its way to the Bahamas and the Caribbean.  Indeed, everyone’s favorite rendezvous point, St Barts, is ready for business.  Every hotel, beach club, and resort (except for one) is reopened.  The harbor’s annual superyacht fireworks display on New Year’s Eve promises to be bigger and better than ever.  Yachting fashion trends abound.

So what will well-traveled women be wearing on their yachts this season?  Here’s a clue:  Look for traditional yacht club attire to give way to “Urban resort wear.”

That’s the buzz on the docks as 2020 winds down, and “yachties” start planning their Winter/Fall escapes.

HOW WE ARRIVED AT WANDERLUST

Certainly, we’ve all seen it.  Covid-19 travel restrictions, lockdowns, and working from home have created a fashion, “new normal.”  Significantly, couture and business attire have been cast aside.  Who needs to dress up for a Zoom meeting when casual wear will do?  Blouses, blazers, heck – even resort-casual clothing now feels restrictive and confining.

We’re yearning for freedom…for the opportunity to once again get out and explore.

THE TREND

Look for statement pieces to reflect the fusion of workwear and leisurewear – all inspired by warm-weather destinations.  The islands offer warm waters and gentle breezes year-round.  Fall collections will integrate lightweight and breathable materials. Denim, cotton, and poplin will lead the way. Of course, some synthetics will remain – to add a bit of stretch where needed.  Still, natural, sustainably-sourced materials will be front and center.

Simply put, Urbanwear is effortless and empowering.

Get your passports ready, ladies – the islands and the hottest clothing trends are calling your name…

TAKE A LOOK

Here are three examples of this season’s hottest yacht fashions, selected by the fashionistas at 1-800 Yacht Charters.

CULOTTES & SLEEVELESS TOPS

Perfect for socializing on the sundeck of your yacht.  Tuck in the top and you’re ready for dinner ashore…

Photograph of a dark-haired girl wearing khaki-colored culottes and a white sleeveless top. She is facing the camera. She is wearing white sneakers. She is carrying a beige flat tote bag with a cat drawing on it in her right hand, and she has nothing in her left hand. There is a rattan chair with white cushion on her left side, and there is a wooden table on her right side. There are 2 books on the table, as well as a bud vase with a single thistle-like grey flower stem in it. There is a beige wall behind her. There are paintings propped against the wall on the floor on her right side.

TROPICAL HALTER TOPS OVER JEANS

Looking to do a little duty-free shipping along the boardwalk in Philipsburg, St Maarten?  This fresh, island look defines today’s modern yachtswoman.

Photograph of a dark-haired girl standing and facing the camera. She is wearing blue denim jeans and a tropical tank top with green palm leaves on it. She is holding a red purse with beige straps in her left hand. Her right arm is by her side.

NAUTICAL T-SHIRTS & SIDE POCKET SHORTS

You’ve got this, girl! Stay cool and wow the crew as you climb into your yacht’s tender.  It’s a short boat ride from your superyacht to the shoreline in Gustavia, St Barts for a beach picnic and barbeque.

Photograph of an Asian girl in nautical striped short sleeved shirt with white side-pocket shorts. She is facing the camera. The photo includes the top of her head down to her feet. She is wearing white flat sandals. She is holding a white bowler hat with black band in her right hand. Her left hand is on her left hip. She is looking toward the left side of the photograph. There is a rattan chair with white cushion on it beside her on her right side, and a small wooden table on her left side. The table has 2 bud vases on it with flower stems and 1 grey thistle-like flower in each.

Top 5 Yacht Names Inspired By “Love” – #1 Is A Hoot!

Posted on

Logo decorated with hearts and red roses

VALENTINE’S DAY

Valentine’s Day.  Specifically, the yearly opportunity to profess our love to that special someone in our lives.  For many of us, we turn to traditional gifts like chocolate, flowers, or a romantic dinner to express our affection.

UPSCALE GIFT GIVERS

Ah, but the uber-wealthy are different.  Even gifts of jewelry pale in comparison to the grandiose gestures some HNWI’s (high net-worth individuals) bestow on their significant others and loved ones.

Yep, when it comes to over-the-top, what says “je t’aime mon tresor” more than a gift of a private superyacht???

THE ULTIMATE GIFT

Of course, the ultimate enhancement to the ultimate gift – naming your yacht to honor the one you love…

TOP 5 LOVING NAMES OF YACHTS

In celebration of Valentine’s Day 2016, we share our favorite 5 private yacht charter vessels with names inspired by love.  Some names are whimsical and cute, others haughty.  Our favorite name, # 1, is simple and oh-so-perfect — boasting the two most famous words uttered by almost every man who understands (and appreciates) who’s really the boss!

Champagne in hot tub on yacht charter

5.  4YOU – Imagine the surprise when this owner turned to his wife and handed her the keys to a 180 foot megayacht, aptly named, 4YOU.  Launched in 2012, this spectacular yacht from the Amels Limited Edition 180 series was designed by Tim Heywood, and features a stunning modern-chic interior by Laura Sessa Romboli. Up to 12 guests can enjoy a Greek yacht charter vacation, from €280,000 per week

4.  DREAM PRINCESS – Sure, lots of guys call their lady a, “Princess.”  But a DREAM PRINCESS? That’s ramping it up another notch.  A popular yacht for special events (e.g. Monaco Grand Prix yacht charter, MIPIM yacht charter, etc.), this Princess 64 motor yacht is a vessel with a real sense of occasion. She offers exceptional performance and boasts a sleek, sporty profile hiding a spacious three-cabin charter layout.  Her interior is light, with elegant details.  Rates from €18,000 per week

ADDITIONAL YACHTS

3.  HONEY BEAR – Every once in a while, we find a yacht named by a woman for the man in her life.  The 28 meter Sunseeker 90 yacht HONEY BEAR is a fast, fun yacht for sophisticated yet informal Monaco yacht charter holidays. Her modern yet warm interior offers plenty of space for relaxation, and her open deck areas are perfect for enjoying the sunshine. She provides accommodations for 8 guests in 4 staterooms and is priced from €45,000 per week

2.  LADY BRIT – there are lots of “Ladies” in the charter fleet, Lady Sheila, Lady Victoria, and more. Still, one stands out for her simple, elegant name – the epitome of European class:  LADY BRIT.  Surprisingly, the yacht was not named for the owner’s wife, but rather, in honor of his mother. The 207 foot Feadship yacht LADY BRIT offers the ideal platform for a resort-style St Barts Yacht Charter in the Caribbean, as she features a wellness spa, gymnasium with panoramic views, outdoor cinema, and an authentic Finnish sauna with private access to the water.  Weekly rates start at $445,000 per week

FINAL YACHT

1.  YES DEAR – what man hasn’t uttered those two words to his special someone???  She is a Voyage 580 Virgin Islands catamaran charter vessel.  Sail yacht YES DEAR is 58 feet long and 31 feet wide.  This is the perfect design for maximum comfort and stability.  She features 5 cabins for up to 10 guests.  Her weekly rates start at $24,000.  Funny side note.  Her dinghy is named, “No Dear.
