Funny enough, yes, yacht charters typically cast a spell on guests. They choose yachting as their favorite vacation. In addition, they repeat the vacation often!
As far as spelling? There are many uncommon terms used in the yacht charter industry. For instance, purser, bosun, and lazarette. But why do I need to spell them?
YACHTING TERMS REASONING
Yacht charter guests do not need to spell boating terms. Have your charter broker and your attorney handle and explain any contractual details and paperwork. It is your job to simply enjoy your vacation.
We understand. Many yacht charter guests simply desire education (as do we). Besides, some charter clients end up as superyacht owners. Subsequently, The Superyacht Experience™ is important to them from all aspects, including spelling.
TERMS THROUGH LANGUAGE
Some items are spelled uniquely in different languages. For instance, salon vs saloon. Does it matter when chartering a yacht? No, not at all. If you are on a yacht, and your crew mentions a term you haven’t heard, simply ask for an explanation.
A COMMONLY USED UNCOMMON TERM
There is an oft-used term in yachting that relates to criminal incarceration. Yikes. Most brokerages continue to use the term, as it is most recognized and used in the industry. That term is “al fresco.” In yacht charter, it refers to any outside space. For example, al fresco (or alfresco) dining commonly refers to outdoor dining.
The actual definition of al fresco in Italian means, “in prison.” Over the years, the term has gained popularity in use for outdoor yachting areas or activities, so it is not frowned upon in the superyacht industry. Alas, times change. In addition, the millennial generation and Urban Dictionary for the term, al fresco, now mean to go without undergarments or to “go commando.”
DO YACHT CHARTERS, THEN, CAST A SPELL?
That is up to you. If spelling and terminology haunt you or give you pause, then maybe yes. If you simply want to enjoy The Superyacht Experience™ and the wonderful magical spell that yachting creates, then it doesn’t matter what things are called — or how they are spelled! As the saying goes, “just don’t call me late for dinner!”
Today we shine the spotlight on the Abeking & Rasmussen yacht EXCELLENCE V. She is the 5th vessel in an eponymous line of highly successful superyachts.
THE SUPERYACHT EXPERIENCE™
German-built, this 60 meter lady combines elegant design with a sense of space. She stretches far beyond her physical dimensions. Indeed, the interior volumes of motoryacht EXCELLENCE Vare far more common on Mediterranean yacht charter vessels in the 70 to 75 meter range. She is a beautiful yacht who delivers The Superyacht Experience™ by 1-800 Yacht Charters to discerning clients.
HER DESIGN
The owner turns to London based Reymond Langton Design to develop a special design approach. For instance, where space is optimally utilized to meet charter guests’ needs. This approach is most evident within the guest staterooms. The master is located on the upper deck. In addition, more staterooms are situated on the main fore deck. These sleeping quarters offer interesting concepts. For example, large windows, spaciousness, and easy accessibility.
THE YACHT EXTERIOR
The exterior of the yacht embodies the sense of space provided in the interior. Her sleek lines, navy blue hull, and white superstructure portray a classic style with a contemporary feel.
Architecturally, major design amenities include:
Beach club to starboard
Port-side gym and massage room
Onboard Cinema
Aft swimming and dive platform
FLEXIBILITY AND COMFORT
A further example of the yacht’s reverence to flexibility and comfort is the tender launching area, which can be directly accessed from the double suite aft of the master stateroom [perfect for discreet getaways, without disturbing other onboard guests].
INTERIOR STYLE
Overall, her interior style is sophisticated and grand. A central elevator connects all five decks, while a spiral staircase provides access to each interior level. Glossy dark wooden wall panels frame the staircase, and natural stone floors complete the elegant feel.
Throughout the saloon and living spaces, soft upholstery and cushions, and curvy furniture are blended together in colors of grays, light beige and hints of red.
HER WARMTH
The same colors, warmth, and intimate feel of the interior flow outward to the exterior lounge areas. Here L-shaped couches actually face outward, allowing guests to enjoy the sweeping panorama from the uncluttered deck areas.
FAVORITE DECK
A favorite deck area is the privacy deck directly outside the master stateroom. Here, the guests can enjoy impressive views from either the large cockpit or the private Jacuzzi tub. Adjacent lounge pads turn this oasis into a private sun deck for the lead charter guests.
For social gatherings, the yacht offers a wonderfully-appointed sun deck featuring a Jacuzzi tub, wet bar, sun pads, and intimate cockpit area.
WATERSPORTS TOYS
For active charterers, the yacht holds 4 sets of SCUBA gear (for rendezvous diving), waverunners, SUPs (Stand Up Paddleboards), kayaks, SeaBob, a water trampoline, and many other water sports toys.
Possibilities are endless onboard Abeking & Rasmussen superyacht, EXCELLENCE V. Charterers will simply be amazed by the space, elegant design, and the variety of options for fun and relaxation.
Topping a fatherland rival by building the world’s largest yacht wasn’t good enough. Lürssen Yachts gobbles up their leading competitor. The German company takes over the entire operation.
OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
At this time, Bremen-based Lürssen Yachts announces the acquisition of Hamburg’s superyacht builder, Blohm+Voss.
COMPANY QUOTE
According to Peter Luerssen, Managing Partner, “With the acquisition of Blohm+Voss we are taking over a shipyard with a strategically advantageous location and versatile production facilities. We want to use these facilities to complement our existing refit and repair activities and also to offer our customers an ever better service.”
WORLD’S LARGEST YACHT
With the 2013 launch of the world’s largest yacht, the 180 meter motor yacht AZZAM, “The big L” wrestled the top spot away from the Roman Abramovich-owned motor yacht ECLIPSE, a 162.50 meter Blohm & Voss GmbH vessel launched in 2010.
Many Lürssen charter vessels are among, the largest yachts offered for hire. Specificially, 94 meter (308ft) Lürssen yacht Kismet II and 70 meter (230ft) Lurssen motor yacht Martha Ann.
As private luxury yacht charter brokers, working and living in South Florida is truly a blessing. This is the yachting capital of the world, and we are blessed with warm weather, great beaches, and year-round access to the newest and largest yachts in the world.
This week, on Thursday and Friday, EVERY PERSON AND CORPORATION in South Florida has a unique opportunity to be generous, by participating in The Miami Foundation’s Give Miami Day — a 24-hour period in which donations can be made online to more than 500 charities. The blitz begins 12:01 a.m. Thursday and runs for 24 hours.
POPULARITY AND GENEROSITY GROWS
Now in its third year, Give Miami Day has gained popularity with each campaign, with more and more charities coming on board. This year, Give Miami will include 115 new charities. For instance, Goodwill Industries, the South Beach Chamber Ensemble, the South Florida SPCA Horse and Large Farm Animal Rescue, and Honor Flight South Florida. Returning charities, for example, Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired Inc., and Shake-A-Leg Miami – a sailing program for the physically-challenged.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Here’s how it works: Simply go to the website www.givemiamiday.org, look at the profiles of each charity, and make a donation to any charity (or charities) that touch your heart. Donations between $25 and $10,000 will qualify for a bonus for the recipient, distributed based on how much is raised and how much is collected in the bonus pool on Give Miami Day. The Miami Foundation, Knight Foundation, and other sponsors have contributed to the bonus pool as an “incentive” for giving.
WHO DOES 1-800 YACHT CHARTERS SUPPORT?
One of the participating charities that we at 1-800 Yacht Charters support is Project PetSnip. Their mission is to stem the staggering pet overpopulation problem in Miami by providing free and low-cost spay and neuter services, along with veterinary health care to animals in need. Last year, we are proud to say, our company President, Jana Sheeder, donated over $4000 to Project PetSnip for the purchase of an autoclave – used to sterilized their medical/surgical tools. Jana explained how our participation helps: “By having additional clean instruments available, more animals can be cared for each day.”
WHAT IS GIVE MIAMI DAY’S IMPACT?
Last year, Give Miami Day received more than 10,000 individual gifts like Jana’s, and raised $3.2 million to support 407 local nonprofit organizations.
There are so many worthy charities participating in give Miami Day – certainly there are one or two that will call out to you. ANY amount will help SO MANY!
Please join us Thursday and Friday for Give Miami Day. As Jana likes to say, “You can make a difference and you can change the world.”

Good times in the Bahamas just got even better, with the addition of the world’s largest tender to a luxury mega yacht charter vessel.
Motor yacht WHEELS, a 50 meter behemoth in her own right, has just added a 24-meter (80′) sportfish tender to her already impressive inventory of watertoys.
Far too large to be carried or towed, the tender, named REEL WHEELS, will follow closely along during charters, ever available for the use of the charter guests.
Amazingly, the yacht’s current tender, a large, Yellow Fin 36 is still in tow. With two high performance sportfish tenders, there’s no excuse for any guests to be left behind when its time to hit the water for fishing, diving, and snorkeling excursions.
The envy of any deep-sea angler, REEL WHEELS is a 2007 Merritt 80 Sportfish yacht, fully-rigged with state-of-the-art fishfinder electronics and fishing gear.
The “REEL” advantage of adding this sportfish yacht to the charter package is the capacity to bring more charter guests. REEL WHEELS has a master cabin with room for two guests. This means the total charter party for a vacation onboard WHEELS is 14 passengers. This is great news considering most megayachts can accommodate no more than 12 guests.
The addition of this 80′ tender rounds out a watersports inventory that includes:
36′ Yellow Fin Tender with 3 x 275hp engines
20′ Nautica RIB tender
17′ Wide Body Rescue Boat with 115hp engine
Two 3-seat Yamaha waverunners
Twelve sets of scuba gear
Brownie’s Third Lung
Underwater scooters
Elliptical machine
Snorkel gear
Assorted towable toys
Fishing gear
Board games
Crestron Central Movie/Music System
Kaleidescape Music/Movie Library
iPod docking stations
XBox
Just reading the list of onboard toys is exhausting!
There is NO extra charge, to bring REEL WHEELS along, in tandem with Trinity motor yacht WHEELS 164. The charter price remains as before: $200,000 per week plus expenses.
In catching up on technical reading, I studied the launch of the 96 meter Feadship yacht VERTIGO.
For many of our clients, the epitome of luxury is a Feadship yacht charter vacation. These fabled Dutch builders have placed a number of their award-winning vessels into the superyacht charter market. Vessels like yacht HURRICANE RUN, motor yacht JOY, and the the 81 meter yacht AIR, the second largest Feadship currently available for charter, hold a coveted ranking among the most popular luxury yachts for hire in the world.
As I reviewed photos of yacht VERTIGO, Feadship hull 1066, I was floored by her massive size. At 96 meters in length (about 315 feet), she is longer than an NFL football field, from bow to stern. Even her onboard amenities are grand – like the 9 meter x 4 meter swimming pool and the below-deck helicopter hangar.
I thought to myself, “Our charter clients will be amazed when they see this yacht.”
AMAZED — BUT WILL clients be????
Is it possible vessels like Feadship yacht VERTIGO and similar sized yachts are too big for a superyacht charter, no matter how impressive their onboard amenities might be. Too ostentatious? An appropriate size to maneuver? Is sher affordable?
IS THERE A BEST SIZE FOR A CHARTERYACHT?
So just how big is too big – and is there an optimal size yacht for charter?
As a person might expect, there is no simple yes or no answer. More importantly, there IS a correct answer – and it comes from understanding not so much what the charterer wants, as what the charterer needs!
While the charter rate and yacht’s appearance and amenities are important, those details initially take a back seat to the primary factors used to determine the optimal size of the yachts we recommend to our clients.
Our charter consultants focus on two primary criteria when determining the right yacht. For instance, destination and intended use.
DESTINATION DICTATES YACHT SIZE
“Where” the client wishes to charter is the first factor in determining how large a yacht they can enjoy. Simply stated, some yachts are too large, and draft too deeply in the water to safely navigate certain destinations.
COMPANY PRESIDENT COMMENTS
Jana Sheeder, our company’s President best explains the challenge:
“A client who enjoyed a 175ft Feadship yacht charter vessel in the Mediterranean in the summer, might ask for a similar yacht to explore the Bahamas in the winter. However, the Bahamas are a shallow destination and many of the best beachfront anchorages are too shallow to be enjoyed by a Feadship with a typical 12ft draft. Instead of quoting a Feadship, we would probably recommend a yacht like the 164ft Mangusta MOONRAKER. She’s just 10 feet shorter in length than a comparable Feadship, but drafts just 6ft – half the draft of a Feadship!”
USE DICTATES YACHT SIZE
“What” the charterer wishes to do during the rental period is the second factor in recommending a yacht based on size. If the yacht is to be used for a corporate event, like the Cannes Film Festival, accessible dockage is crucial to the success of the charter. Our friend Hansel describes the importance of analyzing dockage requirements in relation to the yacht’s size.
“For a static charter, the yacht is normally positioned stern-to (perpendicular to) the quay so VIP guests can come and go. If the yacht is too long, it will have trouble docking stern-to, and it’s bow will jut out, and possibly restrict the passage of yachts entering and exiting the marina. It is far better to provide the client with a yacht shorter in overall length, but greater in volume via multiple decks for entertainment and socializing.”
Once the destination and use issues have been addressed, we can present the largest yachts that won’t compromise the needs of the client. At this point, the focus shifts to cost and amenities, with many clients seeking the biggest yacht in line with their budget, as well as a vessel with unique watertoys.
THE SUPERYACHT OWNER’S PERSPECTIVE
As an interesting side note, the owner’s perspective on what is the ideal size for a superyacht for charter differs from that of the charterer and charter broker. With many owners, bigger is better. Driven in part by ego, yacht owners continue to build larger and larger yachts. In a recent interview with Superyacht Times, John Rosatti, the owner of 65m yacht DOUBLE DOWN, commented on the growing trend to build bigger yachts:
“Everyone’s going bigger now, just look around. In 1988, I had a 34m Thunderball and it was in the top 100 largest yachts. Now I have a 65m, which may have just slipped out of the top 250. These boats get bigger and the ports get smaller. Where do you put them? It’s tough. If you look around there’s virtually nothing under 150 feet now.”
MANAGEMENT WEIGHS IN
Yet even when ego seems to dictate the size of yachts, there is still some semblance of reason for a few yacht owners. Paolo Casani, managing director of C&N, believes new-build growth in charter yachts will be in the 45-65m sector. Casani told Superyacht Times:
“They’re (45-65m yachts) easier to manage and you have more berthing options. Yachts this size are the most appealing for charter. We had a 60m that did 96 days of charter in one season. The owner offset his running costs and actually made a profit. The pricing for charters becomes far less attractive for the market when you get above 65 meters.”
FINAL YACHT SIZE THOUGHT
While affluent owners will continue to push the bar and build yachts in the 100 meter range, and larger, for most charterers, the ideal charter vessel will be the yacht that is best suited for the client’s desired cruising destination and specific use. Whether that yacht is 50 meters or 100, should remain a secondary factor in selecting the right yacht for the ultimate superyacht experience.
We’ve all seen the images. For instance, a silhouette of a sailing yacht, lying at anchor near a secluded beach, the sun setting in the background, or the massive superyachts docked side-by-side in a marina along the Côte d’Azur. It’s not hard to imagine you and your family inserted in those yachting images, enjoying la belle vie.
Think you can afford a holiday at sea on a private yacht?
THE REAL QUESTION
Let’s start with understanding exactly what a yacht charter is all about…
WHAT Is A Luxury Yacht Charter Vacation?
If you’ve ever stayed at a resort, you’ve already experienced the premise of a yachting vacation on a crewed yacht. From accommodations, to meals, activities and amenities.. Everything you and your family need are available in one location. The biggest difference is that your location “moves” when you charter a yacht!
For example, a Virgin Islands yacht charter vessel. Other travelers stay ashore and see the same view from their hotel window. For you, on the other hand, each day you can wake up and experience a new location. Your yacht cruises from island to island. Forget a virtual online slideshow. This is the real deal!
WHAT HAPPENS ONBOARD?
While onboard, you’ll be pampered by a crew of trained professionals. From a captain to navigate, to a host/hostess to serve you, and a chef to prepare your meals. The actual number of crew depends on the size of yacht you charter. It also depends on the level of service you request. There are often be more crew members than charter guests!
Just like the resort, the yacht offers accommodations, areas to relax and socialize, and a wide variety of recreational toys to enjoy. For example, snorkel gear and sandup paddleboards. The larger yachts offer a wider variety of toys and amenities. For instance, waverunners, cinema rooms, exercise equipment, and even ondeck Jacuzzi wellness spas.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YACHT AND RESORT
There is one more distinguishing difference when compared to a resort – it’s completely private – only you and your family and friends and your crew are onboard – no one else! Your confidentiality is assured with 1-800 Yacht Charters.
WHERE Are Luxury Yacht Charter Vacations Offered?
Again, the comparison to seaside resorts best illustrates the locations available for enjoying a yachting holiday – if it’s on the ocean, chances are there are yachts in the area available for hire!
Here’s a partial list of the most popular destinations for chartering a crewed yacht:
Caribbean – the islands of the Caribbean are popular in the winter and spring months, with sailing yachts heavily congregating in the breezy Virgin Islands, and larger motoryachts based in the celebrity-popular uber cosmopolitan areas like St. Martin and St Barts.
Mediterranean – the summer playground for Europeans, charter yachts can be found throughout the Greek islands, as well as along the Italian and French Riviera. In recent years, new cruising grounds in the Med have become increasingly popular, such as the Spanish Balearic Islands and Croatia.
Florida and the Bahamas – unlike Europeans who often take long, multi-week vacations, Americans take shorter holidays, often for no more than a long weekend. Staying closer to home becomes important when travel days are limited, so the idea of a Florida yacht charter escape is very popular, with the nearby Bahamas a strong option, as well.
HOW Can I Afford A Luxury Yacht Charter Vacation?
If you guessed that we would once again go back and look at a resort for the answer – you’re right!
The price options for enjoying a crewed yacht directly compare to the prices of staying at a resort. Basic resorts in popular destinations can be very affordable for a family vacation, and so too can be the cost of a private yacht charter. Conversely, ultra exclusive resorts in posh settings charge premium rates – as do the most luxurious private yachts.
To put this into realistic perspective, here’s a sample of yachts and their prices:
SAILBOAT – sail yacht MORE MAGIC is a 68 foot Virgin Islands yacht charter vessel with accommodations for up to 6 guests in 3 staterooms. Her all-inclusive charter rates start at $18,000/week
MOTORYACHT – the 80 foot motor yacht JODI LEE offers both Bahamas and Florida yacht charter vacations for up to 6 passengers. Here base rate is $26,000/week plus a little extra to cover food, fuel, and dockage.
SUPERYACHT – up to 12 affluent travelers can explore the Mediterranean onboard the 2017 Amels yacht HERE COMES THE SUN, a 272 foot yacht with a crew of 25. Weekly rate is Euro €1,200,000 with additional fees for food, fuel, and dockage.

WHERE SHOULD MY FAMILY GO THIS WINTER?
North American travelers looking for an ocean adventure closer to home might wish to consider a discounted Bahamas yacht charter this winter.
A YACHT CHARTER VACATION! WHAT A GREAT IDEA
Benetti Vision 145 yacht CHECKMATE announces a special offer for the remainder of the winter season in the Bahamas, cutting her weekly charter rate from $200,000 to $150,000. The special rate equates to a 25% savings off the published rates!
We first introduced our readers to this yacht in November, 2013, when she began her inaugural winter charter season in the Bahamas .
The Italian-built superyacht boasts beautiful, quality construction. She has a contemporary chic interior design by Francois Surety. Yacht CHECKMATE is the perfect vessel for a Nassau yacht charter. She has an on-deck master suite with 180 degree panoramic views. In addition, she boasts zero speed stabilizers, VSAT internet access, and a spacious sun deck equipped with a day head.
ACCOMMODATONS
The five guest staterooms include a master cabin on the main deck. The master hosts a King bed, and ensuite baths featuring his and hers bathrooms.
#belowdeck are four spacious cabins with accommodations for 8 additional passengers. In addition, two Pullman berths, suitable for small children exist onboard.
She is the 15th yacht built in the fabled shipyard’s Benetti Vision 145 series of semi-custom yachts. This new yacht is poised to join the many Benetti yacht charter vessels currently in service. For instance, motor yacht SWAN and James Bond yacht, DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER.
After a successful Italy yacht charter season this summer, the owner of Benetti motor yacht ULYSSES has announced his interest to relocate his 56 meter yacht this winter to the warm waters of the Caribbean, and in particular, the new cruising destination Cuba.
The idea of a Cuba yacht charter vacation is now more popular than ever, in large part thanks to the easing of travel restrictions between the United States government and the government of Cuba. The result of minimal tourism in Cuba for the past 5 decades means much of the country remains as pristine as it did a half-century ago.
Small islets and miles of unspoiled beaches along the southern coast of the island nation are ideal for a warm weather yachting vacation. Additionally, the opportunity to interact with the residents and their unique Latin culture rounds out the total (The) Superyacht Experience™.
Offering great value to potential customers is nothing new for the owner of Italian-built motor yacht ULYSSES, a Benetti 184 foot superyacht. In fact, the yacht still has a late summer discount in place for charters in the Mediterranean, along the Italian coast. Although no discounts have been announced yet for Cuba and the Caribbean, we feel it’s only a matter of time before the yacht’s owner dangles a tantalizing offer in front of our noses!
Check back with us during the fall, and we’ll let you know all of the great winter deals available for enjoying a Cuba yacht charter vacation, or any other special deal throughout the Caribbean…
A big surprise awaited 1-800 Yacht Charters at the 2016 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. We inspect several private yacht charter vessels for our clients planning vacations in the Caribbean each winter. Our professional organization, the Florida Yacht Brokers Association (FYBA) emailed membership regarding “big news” announcement at the show.
WHAT WAS THE ANNOUNCEMENT? DUPLICATION!!!
It certainly IS big news: Florida Yacht Brokers Association (FYBA) rebrands as the International Yacht Brokers Association (IYBA)
IYBA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR COMMENTS
On Friday, November 4th, Cindy Sailor, our FYBA Executive Director, held a news conference at the FYBA display booth to announce the change.
“When we mapped out the FYBA membership, it reinforced what we already knew, that FYBA is truly an international organization with members operating in popular yachting areas not just in Florida but around the globe,” said Sailor. “Our new name, ‘International Yacht Brokers Association,’ better reflects who we are — the largest and most prestigious group of professional yacht and charter brokers in the world.”
“The 1300-plus members of our association are dedicated to raising the standard of professionalism in our industry. While many of us have home offices here in South Florida, the yachting capital of the world, many of our member’s sales and yacht charter private vacations take place in other parts of the world. This rebranding better portrays the diversity of our global reach and the impact our members have on the overall yachting industry.”
WHO IS IYBA?
It is an organization from nearly 30 years ago. Members represent more than 400 businesses. First, businesses are responsible for 20 percent of all international yacht sales. Second, they equate to 50 percent of all U.S. domestic yacht sales. Third, a staggering 80 percent of all yacht sales transactions held in the state of Florida.
OTHER YACHT CHARTER COMPANY MEMBERS
The world’s leading charter brokerages, such as Fraser Yachts, Camper and Nicholsons, Northrop and Johnson, and boutique independent agencies like our own 1-800 Yacht Charters are all IYBA members.
OTHER IYBA RESPONSIBILITIES
The influence of IYBA extends beyond yacht sales and luxury yacht charter services. The IYBA Public Affairs Committee lobbies the U.S. and Florida legislation for the benefit of the yachting industry as a whole. This regards multiple issues. For instance, boating safety and regulations, financial affairs, and environmental matters.
Sailor believes our members and our Association have earned the recognition of our peers around the globe.
“As we go into the 2016 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, an event that also started out as Florida-specific and grew into the world’s largest in-water boat show, our new brand positioning will help IYBA members to command the respect from our domestic and international colleagues that they deserve” said Sailor.
LOGO SIMILARITIES
Here, here, Cindy – we couldn’t agree more!!! (The similarity of IYBA’s new corporate logo to our long-established 1-800 Yacht Charters logo shows the kindred spirit of the yacht charter and brokerage industries!) Nice to know that we are consistently monitored and duplicated. Very flattering. Just shows that 1-800 Yacht Charters, the originator of The Superyacht Experience™, is THE industry leader!
