Last week, we reported on an increase of newly-built superyachts entering the market, in combination with fewer weeks of yachting vacations being sold.
In the category of yachts from 30 to 50 meters (about 100 to 165 feet), there was a 28 per cent increase in the number of yachts on the charter market in 2010. At the same time, the same market segment saw a reduction of 10.7 per cent in weekly base rates.
A decrease in the number of charter weeks sold worldwide (down 9 percent in 2010, from 2009) and increased competition due to a growing number of new yachts, means owners must look for new ways to attract potential customers.
So what is emerging as the newest marketing trend in 2012 to lure new and repeat clients?
The largest yachts in the world have accepted the challenge to compete with the world’s best land-based spas. Exercise equipment, once a novelty on yachts and relegated to a small area on deck, has given way to fully-equipped onboard fitness centers and workout rooms.
NFL Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, for example, recently purchased the Amels motor yacht LADY S. Spa type upgrades on the 70 meter yacht include a heated Jacuzzi dip pool with swim jets and in-water exercise bar, Summit-brand deck furniture, a Turkish sauna, and full gym with Woodway treadmills, Techno Multi Cross training platform, a Synchro Excite, and stationary bicycle.
The recently-launched 70 meter motor yacht HIGH POWER III provides an entire deck for wellness. The existence of an true “Spa Deck” shows how unique this Italian-built yacht really is.
A sauna, steam room, and fully-equipped gym are complimented by a private outdoor area with comfortable sunbeds. Adjacent massage and beauty rooms serve as suitable options for total relaxation. Breakfast, light lunches, even barbecues can be enjoyed outside on the spa deck as well, for the outside forward area has been set up with a bar and barbecue.
Look for 2012 to be the year onboard masseuses and wellness crew members offering aromatherapy, meditation, and yoga classes becoming commonplace on many of the world’s newest yachts.

Built in 2015, the yacht spent her first year in charter service in the Mediterranean, and now joins a growing list of superyachts relocating to the Caribbean in December, including the 58 meter Benetti yacht ILLUSION V.

NEWLY OPENED DATES FOR ANTARCTICA YACHT CHARTER ESCAPE
Due to a last-minute cancellation, 1-800 Yacht Charters is pleased to announce a special opportunity to discover Antarctica this January on the world’s largest ice-breaking yacht, the 77 meter (254 ft) motor yacht LEGEND.
We first introduced our readers to expedition yacht charter vessel LEGEND and her upcoming schedule for Antarctica in a blog in October, when owner Jan Verkerk gave the green light to accept reservations in Antarctica through mid February, 2017. The ship was built as a commercial vessel in 1973, then purchased by Verkek and outfitted in 2015-2016 as the ultimate luxury ice-breaker (enabling charter clients the unique opportunity to explore one of the last great frontiers on the planet earth, from the comfort of a luxury yacht charter vessel).
The yacht is packed full of features – from a helicopter to a 3-man submarine. Super yacht LEGEND allows her guests to explore this rare, frozen world from an entirely new angle (think of the early explorers who trekked across the frozen tundra in snowshoes and slept in tents…brrrrr…!!!
Intimate gatherings and relaxation can be found in the cinema, the Balinese-themed spa, or bubbling away on deck in the heated Jacuzzi. There’s even a real fireplace in the saloon where you can cozy up and enjoy a good book.
Active guests can get their hearts pumping with a workout in the gym, exploring the ice packs on snow scooters, or hiking and coming face-to-face with the wildlife.
The weekly rate for up to 26 guests is $460,000 plus running expenses – items such as food, fuel, dockage, bar, etc. (+ Commercial Passenger Ship local taxes only when applicable). The charter fee includes personal laundry, normal communication costs, hotel supplies and basic internet (248/512 internet speed). Higher internet speed is possible, but not included in the charter fee.
Further details of seasonal rates:
After spending time in Antarctica, the yacht will head to South America and the Caribbean, then on to the Mediterranean for the summer. Here are her current, confirmed expedition yacht charter vacations, and her schedule:

Hurricane Irma struck the British Virgin Islands in early September, 2017. She left destruction. For instance, a trail of battered yachts, debris-filled beaches, and widespread destruction.
Fast forward 2-plus years. The island chain is once again as popular as ever as a world-class yacht charter destination! The islands are back to normal. For example, the debris is gone, the marinas are rebuilt, and the white-sand beaches are once again glistening in the rays of the warm Caribbean sun.
Great news! There is a new reason to choose the BVI this spring for your Caribbean superyacht experience. DUTY FREE FUEL.
The British Virgin Islands (BVIs) government amended its custom regulations in December 2019. They now offer duty free fuel to yachts.
Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters, explains:
“As long as your luxury charter yacht remains in the BVI for a minimum three days, your crew can take advantage of these cost savings. Depending upon the size of the superyacht you charter, the savings can be significant.”
Andrew Fahie, the Premier of the BVI also commented on the new rule: “This will be a step in the right direction towards encouraging megayachts to make the BVI their home port,” says Andrew Fahie, the premier of the BVIs.
Other areas of the Caribbean, for instance, St Martin and St Barts, draw more megayacht visits. The BVIs seem prepared to give the other islands a run for their money.
Multiple marinas for deep-draft superyachts, especially sailing yachts, now exist.
The BVI has year-round warm temperatures and as a general rule. Not only that, but calmer waters occur here than in other areas of the Caribbean.
Flight times from the USA to the British Virgin Islands are shorter. Not only is there an international airport in Tortola suitable for both commercial and private jets. but there is also regular ferry service between the BVI and the nearby U.S. Virgin Islands.
If easy flight access, beautiful anchorages, and money-saving opportunities matter to you, consider the British Virgins for your next superyacht charter vacation this spring.
In conclusion, it is time to plan your yacht charter for the Spring. Why not enjoy The Superyacht Experience in a destination with duty free fuel? The savings that you enjoy on the fuel can be used to purchase a duty free piece of jewelry for your loved one, maybe? SPECIAL HOLIDAY RATE
One of the largest yachts available for hire has cut her Caribbean premium-season rate for Christmas week by €60,000.
The 72.5 meter Dunya Yachts motor yacht AXIOMA is currently open for Christmas week, preferably in the Windward islands of the Caribbean. To entice a reservation, the owner has lowered the rate from €550,000 per week to €490,000 per week – a savings of more than 10%.
Currently ranked #151 on the list of the world’s largest yachts, super yacht AXIOMA (ex yacht Red Square) accommodates 12 guests in a master suite, VIP suite, and four guest double cabins, two of which are convertible into twins.
The yacht boasts a beach house-style interior by the legendary designer Alberto Pinto (who sadly passed away before the yacht was launched in 2013). The interior “wow factor” is off the chain with unique features like an open mezzanine in the main salon, and a media lounge on the owner’s deck. Exterior amenities are just as amazing, especially the infinity swimming pool, and the large Jacuzzi with a swim-up bar, located on the bridge deck.
Like so many other yachts now focused on the wellness yacht charter concept, the yacht also boasts a full gym, massage room, and steam room…
This stunning superyacht is already reserved 27 Dec, 2016 – 3 Jan, 2017, from St Lucia to Canuan; thus, the owner would like to secure a charter immediately prior to this booking somewhere in the area of St Lucia.

As the world’s largest yachts continue to grow larger and larger each year, so too do the ideas of superyacht owners as to what features and amenities will make their, “floating villas” stand out from the crowd. This demand for over-the-top luxury pushes high-profile yacht designers to continually “reinvent” the ultimate onboard amenities.
No longer is an ondeck Jacuzzi style spa satisfactory. Now, the hot tub must double as a wave-generating swimming pool – with a backlit waterfall cascading over the edge of the spa into a smaller reflection pool. Along a similar innovation path, our company President, Jana Sheeder, recently toured a new build megayacht with designer Evan Marshall. The Marshall-designed yacht features a sundeck with a sunken-floor lounge area that can be flooded with several inches of water, to create a faux beach atmosphere – with the legs of the chaise lounges in the cool water!
Company President, Jana Sheeder, and our charter team returned from the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show where many manufacturers and designers displayed their latest innovations and concepts. They took notes of the latest trends that are becoming more and more popular with superyacht owners and designers. Here are the top three amenity design trends seen for 2018:
In prior years, most sundeck bars were intentionally undersized, to make room for the storage of watertoys on deck. With the advent of more yachts keeping the tenders and toys in garages, the ability to expand ondeck amenities has seen an increase in large outdoor wetbars, built with luxurious stones, polished finishes, and mood lighting. The bars have become focal points ondeck – places where families and friends gather for extended periods to socialize and enjoy the fresh air and seaviews.
One of the most magnificent outdoor bars is located on the sundeck of Lurssen yacht SOLANDGE. The large curved bar is positioned to the port side and boasts an opaque lighting design that creates a glamorous evening hang-out. This 85 meter Lürssen superyacht was designed by Espen Øeino and has many other notable design features, including a spectacular superyacht fireplace.
Fun, unusable rooms are now popping up on the largest superyachts – from superyacht gyms and spas to cinemas and nightclubs, all designed around the owner’s passions and what they think will appeal to yacht charter guests. Designer Tim Heywood reflects on the trend:
“Lifestyle-specific rooms — from casinos to underwater viewing rooms to other ideas such as snow rooms, meditation spaces, art galleries or anything designed to meet an owner’s particular needs — have all featured in my designs. In fact, our first cryotherapy room is in production, and it won’t be the last.”
Interior designers Redman Whiteley Dixon created an amazing wellness area onboard the 63 meter Feadship motor yacht LADY BRITT. The standout room in this area is the Finnish sauna, which opens on to the ocean. Namaste … Charter guests can literally heat up, then take a plunge into the cool ocean. The wellness area features space for massage and hairdressing, and the gym’s panoramic sliding glass doors open to the large spa pool on the sundeck.
With more designers relegating tenders and watertoys to side-opening garages on superyachts, prime aft areas that once housed these items are being redesigned with hydraulic balconies and decks to serve as open–air beach clubs. First generation beach clubs were little more than extended swim platforms with tender garages emptied of their contents to make room for a lounge chair or two. Newer designs offer bars, lounges, and spa access points. The best of the new generation clubs serve as all-round waterfront entertaining venues.
Rarely do you find beach clubs on sailboats, yet sail yacht AQUIJO is anything but an ordinary sailboat. The editors of Boat International magazine described her club area: “As the world’s largest ketch, she has more than enough room to accommodate a spacious beach club, complete with a hammam [turkish steam bath], sauna and a spectacular spa pool that is illuminated by a large skylight. As if all that wasn’t impressive enough, the watertight aft doors mean that (sail yacht) Aquijo’s beach club can still be used when she’s sailing along at her brisk top speed of 20 knots.” Amazing…

OK, we’ll admit it – when Dee Kraley, manager of motor yacht SuRi, first invited us onboard the former oil rig supply boat, we were skeptical. Was it really possible to take an old ship built in 1978 by Halter Marine, cut her in half to extend her overall length from the middle, and transform her into a modern expedition yacht charter vessel?
After two extensive rebuilds and a 2016 refit, the answer is a resounding, “YES!” The “old supply ship” is indeed one of the most luxurious charter yachts available in her size and price category.
Adding 11 meters to her overall length significantly boosted her volume, both indoors and on deck.
Yet more impressive than her transformation is her owner’s commitment to creating the ultimate adventure travel vessel in the charter market.
While most superyachts carry a respectable inventory of watersports gear, this yacht takes it to another level – with multiple tenders, a helicopter, seaplane, jet skis, hoverboard, scuba diving equipment, quadskis, and so much more. Twenty (20) active, athletic crewmembers add to the neverending fun, excitement, and adventure enjoyed by charter guests.
So where do you base a yacht filled-to-the-brim with toys? It must be a destination with endless opportunities for exploration and water-themed adventure. The answer? The South Pacific and the islands of Fiji, French Polynesia, and Indonesia.
A favorite anchorage for yacht SuRi and her charter guests are the islands of Raja Ampat, an archipelago of 1500 islands located off the northwest tip of New Guinea. Marine life thrives here, and the bio-diversity is unlike anywhere else in the world – with hundreds of species of corals and reef fish, along with whales, dolphins, and giant rays.
Check out this amazing action-packed yacht charter video of motoryacht SuRi and her onboard guests enjoying the breathtaking beauty of Raja Ampat:
Come enjoy The Superyacht Experience onboard motor yacht SuRi. Available summer 2018 in French Polynesia and Fiji, and priced at $350,000 per week (plus operating expenses like food and fuel) for up to 12 guests. Click HERE for further information…
WHAT’S IN A NAME? No, she is not owned by Tom Cruise or Katie Holmes or daughter, Suri. Her name, SuRi, is the combination of her owners’ first names. Just in case you were wondering… 😉

Danish builder Oceanco unveiled their superyacht project, the 120 meter yacht AMARA, at the Dubai International Boat Show (DIBS).
As part of the yard’s continuing effort to push the boundaries of design, Oceanco yacht AMARA showcases the builder’s new “lifestyle philosophy” concept which places great emphasis on a family oriented style of living. Sam Sorgiovanni, the yacht’s designer, describes the resort-style concept of the project: “…the interior and exterior design work in harmony to create a holistic feeling of a relaxed well-appointed resort.”
Our quick review of the yacht’s initial technical specs discovered an interior with a contemporary style – with natural tones and light woods, designed to embrace the ‘resort’ lifestyle. Plenty of wide open spaces and natural light lend to the relaxed atmosphere.
Onboard amenities include:
With a solid reputation for building luxury yacht charter superyachts such as 56 meter The WELLESLEY, and the massive 95 meter Oceanco yacht INDIAN EMPRESS, we’re already licking our chops to be the first to offer the 120 meter motor yacht AMARA to our clients.
According to our company president, Jana Sheeder, we may have to wait a while.
“As we are seeing with the 70 meter Heesen yacht GALACTICA SUPER NOVA, also a new concept in resort-style yachts, I believe yacht AMARA will enjoy extensive private use by her owner prior to becoming available for charter. The good news is that we continue to witness growth in the experiential travel sector, especially with an emphasis on wellness yacht charter vacations. The demand for superyachts with resort facilities such as spas and beauty salons is strong, and the eventual owner of AMARA will be in a solid position to capitalize on this growing business trend.”
Here’s the Danish builder’s press release via PRNewswire:
Oceanco Unveils Amara – A 120-Meter ‘Resort’ Yacht
ALBLASSERDAM, The Netherlands, February 28, 2017 /PRNewswire/ —
Amara, Oceanco’s newly designed and engineered 120-meter private yacht concept, designed in collaboration with Sam Sorgiovanni Designs was unveiled by His Excellency Saeed Harib, Secretary General of Dubai Sports Council, Vice President and Chairman of Dubai International Marine Club – Mina Seyahi, and Senior Advisor to the Dubai International Boat Show.
Oceanco revealed the lifestyle philosophy of creating a yacht designed for extended families and friends. Amara provides unparalleled living and entertainment facilities for up to 20 guests. The contemporary interior with natural timber, stone and textural carpets and fabrics blend to create an inviting and natural environment.
“In designing the exterior lines of Amara, I wanted to portray a very strong and muscular form that was progressive in design but with a timeless appeal,” says Sorgiovanni. Its long bow accentuates the vessel’s generous proportions. Most importantly, the interior and exterior design work in harmony to create a holistic feeling of a relaxed well-appointed resort.
The lower level deck opens up to reveal an expansive beach club resort that offers 3-way access to the sea; port starboard and aft. Also on this deck is a comprehensive wellness area with banya, hammam, beauty treatment lounge and a cinema experience for 16 persons.
A waterfall from the upper deck cascades down into the main deck swimming pool. And the main deck is party central, featuring a stunning pool bar, opening balconies and large entertainment areas.
The upper deck has an outstanding owner’s apartment with a private plunge pool and open-air aft deck dining for 20+ people.
The gym with a capital view is located on the bridge deck. For intimate gatherings there are two Majilis-style areas (meaning, “a place of sitting” in Arabic, per Wikipedia) aboard. In addition to the cinema on the lower deck, there is a quixotic cabana style open-air cinema on the sun deck. For young guests and those young at heart, there are accommodations for fun sports equipment such as a climbing wall and water slides.
Amara reflects Oceanco’s applied evolutionary thinking, allowing clients to shape their way of life onboard. Amara will take you from the crystal waters of the Maldives to the iconic Caribbean islands, from the ancient marvels of the Mediterranean to the golden sands of Sri Lanka, in privacy, safety, and tranquility.
