Best Airport for Caribbean Catamaran Yacht Charter

Posted on

QUESTION

“We live in the USA.  I’ve been told crewed catamaran charters are the best way to enjoy a yachting vacation in the Virgin Islands.  Do you have any suggestions as to the most convenient, best airports?     Jenny S.

ANSWER

Hi Jenny.  We are thrilled to hear about your plans – a travel writer once described a Caribbean sailing yacht charter as, “One of the top five vacations in the world!”

If you wish to explore the US Virgin Islands (USVI), then the Cyril E. King International Airport (airport code:  STT), in St.Thomas  is your best bet.

Photo of the Cyril E. King airport in St. Thomas, USVI.. The photo is taken from the parking lot toward the main building. There is a beautiful green mountain in the background.

ANSWER CONTINUES

Note:  There is also an airport in St. Croix, the Henry E. Rohlsen International Airport, St. Croix (STX). However, very few catamaran and sailboat rental companies operate from St. Croix, as there are very few calm anchorage areas.
So who flies into STT (St. Thomas)?  As to major airlines flying from the United States to Saint Thomas, Delta has flights to Saint Thomas Cyril E King, American Airlines has flights to STT Cyril E King, and US Airways has flights to Saint Thomas Cyril E King International Airport.  You’ll find both direct flights as well as connecting flights through San Juan, Puerto Rico in the Spanish Virgin Islands.

NOW WHAT?

Now that you know HOW to get there, here are three crewed catamaran sailing yachts available for charter in the Virgin Islands.Sunreef 70 catamaran MUSE

Charter Chef Passionate about Cooking and Travel

Posted on

Photograph of chef in kitchen of catamaran sailboat. She is wearing dark t-shirt. She is very pretty, has dark hair and dark eyes. You can see that the sailboat is in a marina, as there are other boats seen out the windows behind her.

CATAMARAN YACHT CHARTER

While affordable catamaran sailing yachts under 50 feet still dominate the charter industry, advances in shipbuilding technology have lead to a dramatic increase of ultra-luxury catamarans larger than 60 feet in length.  Indeed, yachts like the 62′ catamaran IN THE WIND, and the Fountaine Pajot Galathea 65 model catamaran WORLD’S END have helped redefine multihull luxury and comfort.

CHEF AND CREW HIGHLIGHT

Yet with so much emphasis placed on the size and amenities of the newest and largest yachts, it’s easy to overlook a key component to successful crewed catamaran charters – the crew!

WHY IS CREW IMPORTANT?

Without the talents of an experienced skipper and a well-trained chef, a catamaran vacation, no matter how new and large the boat, would be nothing more than a predictable, ho-hum affair.

SPOTLIGHT ON CHEF, CARO UY

In an appreciative nod to the talents of these fine crews, we shine a spotlight today on Caro Uy, the culinary lioness aboard sail catamaran MUSE.

Caro grew up in a family where the pleasures of the table were a habit. She has more than ten years of experience in the catering and gastronomic food industry.  Originally a graphic designer, Caro now prefers to express her creative energy in the preparation of meals with seasonally fresh products.

CARO’s GIFT

Caro’s true gift is the ability to adapt her menus to suit any special dietary requirements of her onboard guests.

While her cooking is based on classic techniques, the variations of flavors are a reflection of her travels throughout the Middle East (Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Iran) ) as well as Mexico and Southeast Asia (Thailand and Vietnam).

CHEF EXPERIENCE

Having grown up along Australia’s coast, Caro has always loved the sea and the romance of sailing.   She is also intrigued by what lies below the sea’s surface and is a PADI Open Water Dive Instructor, as well as a TDI Extended Range Diver.  Her ocean adventures have taken her to diverse ports of call such as the Canary Islands, Costa Brava, and the British Virgin Islands.

CULINARY HONORS

Her recent industry recognition includes top culinary honors at the November 2010 British Virgin Islands Boat Show where she won:

– 1st prize – Entrée Division
– 1st prize – Dessert Division
– 2nd prize – Salad/Appetizer Division
– 2nd prize – Coffee course

Congratulations, Caro! Your talents and passion are at the very heart of the joys of a memorable yachting vacation.

Couple Charter Yacht to Discover Meaning Of Life

Posted on

Catamaran yacht charter sailboat, The Meaning of Life…

“Dear Captain Terry,

Apologies for not replying before. A big work backlog on my return. Just to say that we absolutely loved the holiday. We would recommend 42…THE MEANING OF LIFE, THE UNIVERSE, AND EVERYTHING to anyone and would hope to go again ourselves. John and Kath were completely brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble for them. They were fantastic hosts working I have to say extraordinarily hard. The sailing, the food and all the other features on the boat were so good. And John even got me diving for the first time which I loved. The whole experience was just amazing. So thanks to you for suggesting “42.” I am quite sure we could have done no better.

Best wishes,
David P.”

Editor’s note: Launched in 2006, crewed catamaran sailing yacht 42 THE MEANING OF LIFE, THE UNIVERSE, AND EVERYTHING certainly has the longest name of all vessels offering crewed catamaran charters.  Affectionately called 42 for short, this Virgin Islands yacht charter vessel offers accommodations for 6 guests in 3 cabins with ensuite bathrooms.

Onboard watertoys include towable toys such as a wakeboard, kneeboard, and a ski-tube, and fishing and snorkel gear.

Available for Caribbean yacht charters, the yacht is based in the British Virgin Islands but will go south to St Martin, St Barts, Antigua and even into the Grenadines and St Lucia. Her published rate is $12,000 per week for 2 passengers, $14,000 per week for 4 passengers, and $16,000 per week for 6 guests. Rates are inclusive of meals and ship’s bar.

Similar yachts available in the Caribbean include the 56′ catamaran sail yacht BACCHUS
(€ 20,000 per week all inclusive), the 62′ catamaran sail yacht AVALON  ($26,000 per week, all inclusive), and the 65′ sail catamaran WORLD’S END (€ 23,400 per week, plus expenses).
