Luxury Yacht Charter: What Is The Milk Run?

Posted on

Q:  I’ve read a few yachting articles that referred to superyachts seeking new cruising grounds as an alternative to the traditional “Milk Run.”  What is a milk run in yachting?      Amy S.

A:  Thank you for your question, Amy. Let’s start with a quick peek at the definition of milk run in an online dictionary.

“Milk Run” – Noun…A routine, uneventful journey.

In the world of megayacht rental vacations, there are two primary offerings that account for the bulk of the charter business:  Caribbean yacht charter vacations in the winter and spring, and Mediterranean yacht charter vacations in the summer and early fall.

The sky is blue with puffy clouds. There is a white catamaran sailboat at anchor in the distance, just off center in the photograph.

WHAT DO CHARTER CLIENTS WANT?

Charter clients are like most other travelers – they want to “get away,” but most prefer to get to their intended destination quickly.
For North Americans, this means a short flight to the balmy Caribbean to sail, cruise, and visit islands like St. Thomas and St Barts.
The same holds true for Europeans, who can take drive or take a train to seaport destinations like St. Tropez, Positano, or Monaco.

CROSS THE POND

Like any business, demand dictates the industry.  First, the owners of the megayachts instruct their crews to position in the Caribbean for winter/spring. Second, they “cross the pond.”   Third, they reposition in the south of France or Monaco for the summer season.
Thus, it is this routine, somewhat uneventful journey between the Caribbean and the Mediterranean that boaters refer to as the, “Milk Run.”

EXOTIC DESTINATIONS

Side notes:  A handful of yacht owners have recently made efforts to entice potential customers to break away from the traditional cruising grounds, and consider yachting holidays in more exotic locales.  Some of the new up and coming destinations include:
  • Australia yacht charter
  • Middle East yacht charter
  • Antarctic yacht charter
  • Thailand yacht charter

November is the month many yachts make the “Milk Run,” sailing across the Atlantic Ocean from Europe to the Caribbean. As in years past, the Virgin Island yacht charter fleet is expected to dominate the market in terms of the number of available yachts for hire, especially in the category of crewed catamaran charters.  Yachts such as Lagoon 620 catamaran yacht

ST. THOMAS WELCOMES THE YACHTS

THE CURE, and Sunreef 62 catamaran, TAHAA II are already in position to accept reservations (how does a Welcome to 2014 yacht charter vacation sound???).While the St. Thomas yacht charter market in the USVI, and the Tortola yacht charter market in the BVI are quite sizeble in terms of small to mid-size yachts, a large contingent of sail superyachts will choose the deeper water of the Leeward Islands for their winter base.  The St Martin yacht charter fleet and the St Barts fleets are expected to include the following mega yacht charter stalwarts.  For instance, 203 foot sail yacht ATHOS – 198 foot sail yacht KOKOMO – and 183 foot Perini Navi yacht PANTHALASSA

WHEN IS THE CARIBBEAN SAILING FLEET ARRIVING?

The Caribbean sailing yacht fleet will be in place from early December, 2013 through April, 2014.
