Award-Winning Style

Motor yacht SEALYON first launched in 2009 . Her name at the time was yacht CANDYSCAPE II.  We remember saying, “This yacht has, ‘it.  IT refers to that exceptional fusion of glamour, design, and quality.  For instance, many sing the praises of the Espen Øino-designed superyacht.  She is built by Italy’s Viareggio Super Yachts.  The yacht scored a 2010 World Superyacht Award as the Best Displacement Motor Yacht, 500GT-1,299GT.

Interior Design As Sweet As Candy

Award-winning recognition followed in 2011 with a win at the International Yacht Awards.  It was in the category of “Power Yachts over 60 metres.”  She won for her outstanding interior design by Candy & Candy of London.  With this in mind, one judge comments on her interior.

“An eclectic collection of detailed decoration using veneers, fabrics, leathers, metals and stones to create a truly unique floating wonder.”

Every Picture Tells A Story

Fast-forward to 2018.  The 202-foot superyacht SEALYON is still as impressive as on day one. T. Debuse, charter manager for the owner’s comments.

“SEALYON is undoubtedly a yacht that has fulfilled its mission statement with the highest build quality and superbly comfortable, beautifully decorated and detailed interior.” DeBuse also thinks the yacht’s new video captures the splendor of the yacht.  “They say a picture paints a 1000 words.  The video of  Sealyon paints a picture indeed!”

ADVENTURE & LUXURY – HAND IN HAND

The hottest trend in yachting continues this summer.  Motor yacht LEGEND joins a growing fleet of luxury yacht charter vessels forgoing the Mediterranean. She heads to the extreme Arctic and Northern Europe for amazing adventures.

Woman in white bikini and arms raised in air standing on snow in front of motoryacht LEGEND

ANTARCTICA

A winter expedition in Antarctica relocates Icon yacht LEGEND to northern Europe for the summer. She stops in the Spring in the frozen tundra of Greenland.  Charters secure by action-seeking travelers in both May and June already.

READY FOR ADVENTURE?

Activities offered aboard this yacht charter boat include whale watching, heliskiing (heli-skiing), and rides via dog sleds and snow scooters.

Ultra-luxury expedition yachts enter the charter market daily.  The adventure travel movement reached the luxury sector of the market.  Adventure travel is no longer only for budget-conscious. Specifically, willingly “roughing it” in hostels and tents.  Expedition superyachts enable upscale travelers the experience. In specific, adventure travel vacation with incredible creature comforts.

WHICH YACHTS OFFER ADVENTURE?

The growing list of yachts offering activity-oriented charters in the Arctic and northern Europe include 229-foot superyacht SHERAKHAN and 205-foot Icon yacht BATON ROUGE (in Norway in June). In addition, the 238-foot Abeking and Rasmussen Motoryacht CLOUDBREAK (scheduled for May 2019 in Greenland).

A closer look at yacht LEGEND demonstrates the appeal of these modern expedition yachts.

LEGEND KEY FEATURES

She is, indeed, incredible.  The yacht offers a commercially-certified helipad, 3-man submarine, and an ice-breaking hull.  Guests enjoy snow scooters (snowmobiles), a Balinese spa, and onboard cinema. Above all,  an aft-deck heated pool, gymnasium, and 26 guests in 13 luxury staterooms.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Yes, indeed –this luxury yacht charter vessel has many features.  For instance, the helicopter and the 3-person submarine.  This yacht allows guests to explore from entirely new angles.  Without a doubt, guests relax and watch movies in the cinema. They definitely get massages in the Balinese-themed spa below deck.  Guests enjoy cocktails on deck in the ultra-heated Jacuzzi.  Lastly, just cuddle up by the fireplace with a good book. The gymnasium affords additional health and wellness. In addition to this, active guests explore on the snow scooters.  Additionally, they encounter wildlife on land.  Of course, perfect photo opportunities add to a memorable vacation of a lifetime.

HEADCOUNT

A big “plus” of many expedition yachts is size.  Specifically, the ability to accommodate large families and groups of friends.  Especially, since most luxury charter yachts take a maximum of 12 passengers.  Whereas yachts like LEGEND and SHERAKHAN both legally and comfortably accommodate 26 guests.

Fab Four The Inspiration For Amels Yacht Here Comes The Sun Owner

Posted on

Photograph of motoryacht underway. Hull of yacht is beige. Superstructure is white. Waves are lapping at the bottom of the yacht.

When it comes to naming a superyacht, the sources of inspiration seem limitless.

WHAT IS IN A SUPERYACHT NAME?

Many owners select the name of their spouse or their children.  Others opt for themes, such as romance and affection.  Of course, movie-themed names remain popular as well (e.g.  John and Jeanette Staluppi and their James Bond yacht selection including DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER, CASINO ROYALE, and Benetti yacht SPECTRE, Project FB269.

HERE COMES THE SUN

The multi-yacht owner of 83-meter Amels motor yacht HERE COMES THE SUN, has an inspiration. In specific, it is music.  It is somewhat obvious to most Baby Boomers. Obviously, songs by The Beatles.

The owner had two other yachts.  First, the 47-meter Heesen yacht LET IT BE.    Second, the 65-meter Amels Limited Editions 212 yacht IMAGINE (now INFINITE SHADES).

THE SUN IS RIGHT

In a way, the name seems entirely appropriate.  This yacht is a behemoth.  Additionally, she seems to be the size of the sun. In specific, in silhouette against the evening skyline.  She is the new flagship of the fabled Dutch yard.  In addition, the first Amels Limited Editions 272.  The yacht comes in at 2827 gross tons, more than the 95-meter Lurssen yacht KISMET (2700GT).

Would you like a closer look at the Andre Winch-designed interiors?  Also, Tim Heywood exteriors or superyacht HERE COMES THE SUN?  Click https://youtu.be/yY2NS9-b6sU to enjoy our short video production of this spectacular luxury yacht charter vessel.

How To Cut Yacht Charter Taxes In Half

Posted on

Blue box with text inside of it. The text reads VAT on top in bold white letters. It reads ALERT below the word, vat, but the word, alert, is in normal font, not bolded.

VAT taxes on yacht charters

THE CHALLENGE

Every summer, hundreds of well-heeled travelers migrate to the Western Mediterranean.  They travel there to enjoy a private yacht luxury charter vacation.  Coastal towns like Nice and St Tropez in France participate.  San Remo and Portofino in Italy also host dozens of superyachts. The boats bring charterers from around the world.  It is an affluent vacation.  Even the wealthy cringe.  Specifically when their exclusive yacht rental holiday receives VAT charges often in excess of 12%.  They know the value of their hard-earned dollars.  We make sure that their memorable and valuable vacation funds are spent wisely.

HIGH TAXES

Imagine spending €725,000/wk to rent a yacht. For example, Admiral superyacht PLANET NINE as your holiday hire.  Just envision incurring an additional €87,000 in VAT?  Ouch!!!

THE SOLUTION TO LOWERING TAXES

Over the years, we composed many blogs about the challenges of VAT taxes.  Yacht rental guests need to stay aware of the laws.  In some years, yacht charters were VAT exempt. In others, the exemption was rescinded.  The rates go up, down, and often vary among various European Union countries, like France, Spain, and Italy.

COMPANY PRESIDENT COMMENTS

Fortunately, with a little advance planning, it might be possible to reduce your charter’s VAT liability by up to 50%.  Jana Sheeder, our company’s President explains:

“If you rent a luxury yacht for a vacation in the South of France, say, Nice, Antibes, Cannes, and neighboring Monte Carlo (in the principality of Monaco), you will incur a VAT charge of 12%. However, if leave European Union waters during your charter, the VAT is reduced by 50%.  The easiest way to accomplish this is to schedule an overnight run to the island of Sardinia, off the French coast. Spend a day of so in the area, then cruise back to the South of France.  Not only is this a worthwhile itinerary, you’ll also enjoy a tremendous discount in your VAT expenses.”

MAKING IT LEGAL

To accomplish this, and to be in full, legal compliance with the European Union statutes, Jana adds a clause.  In specific, to the client’s yacht charter agreement that reads, in part,

“It is agreed between the parties that the yacht will cruise in international waters for part of the itinerary, which has not been determined, so VAT will only be charged on the 50% of the charter fee. In the event the yacht does not cruise in international waters and VAT becomes due on the total amount of the charter fee, the charterer hereby agrees to pay the outstanding VAT on the total amount of the charter fee in cleared funds and without delay to the stakeholder. VAT is calculated with a lump sum reduction of the time spent in EU waters in application of BOI-TVA-CHAMP-20-50-20-20120912 Article 90.”

SAVE MONEY ON FRANCE AND ITALY CHARTERS

In addition to reducing VAT expenses in France, it’s also possible to find similar savings in other Western Mediterranean destinations.   Similar money-saving strategies apply for charter yacht luxury vacations in Italy as well.

1-800 YACHT CHARTER STRATEGY

For example, if a charterer wants to start and end a 10 night trip in Naples, Jana will encourage the client to end the charter in Sardinia, to the west, or Sicily to the south, in order to cruise through international waters, and qualify for a reduced VAT fee.

Is a Private Luxury Yacht Charter for You?

Posted on

HAVE YOU SEEN THEM?

We’ve all seen the images. They include a silhouette of a sailing yacht. Also nearby is a secluded beach.  The sun is setting in the background of all photos.  Massive superyachts are docked side-by-side in a marina along the Côte d’Azur.  Imagine you and your family inserted in the yachting images.  Enjoy la belle vie.

CAN I AFFORD A PRIVATE YACHT CHARTER?

Is it realistic to think you can afford a holiday at sea on a private yacht?

WHAT IS A YACHT CHARTER ALL ABOUT?

To answer that question, let’s start with understanding exactly what a yacht charter is all about.

silhouette of catamaran sailboat at anchor with a beautiful orange sunset behind it. The silhouette of a bird flies in from the right side of the photo

WHAT Is A Luxury Yacht Charter Vacation?

You’ve stayed at a resort. You have enjoyed the premise of a yachting vacation on a crewed yacht.  From accommodations, to meals, activities and amenities, you have it all.  Everything you and your family need are available in one location.   The biggest difference is next. Your location “moves” when you charter a yacht!

EXAMPLES OF CHARTER DETAILS

Take, for example, a Virgin Islands yacht charter vessel.  Other travelers stay ashore and see the same view from their hotel window.  Each day you can wake up and experience a new location.  Your yacht cruises from island to island.  Forget a virtual online slideshow.  This is the real deal!

While onboard, you’ll be pampered by a crew of trained professionals – from a captain to navigate, to a host/hostess to serve you, and a chef to prepare your meals.  The actual number of crew depends on the size of the yacht you charter and the level of service you request.

Just like the resort, the yacht offers accommodations, areas to relax and socialize, and a wide variety of recreational toys to enjoy – like snorkel gear, kayaks, and paddleboards.  The larger yachts offer a wider variety of toys and amenities, including wave runners, cinema rooms, exercise equipment – even ondeck Jacuzzi spas.

There is one more distinguishing difference when compared to a resort.  It is completely private.  Only you, your family/friends, and professional crew are onboard.

WHERE Are Luxury Yacht Charter Vacations Offered?

Again, the comparison to seaside resorts best illustrates the locations available for enjoying a yachting holiday –  if it’s on the ocean, chances are there are yachts in the area available for hire!

Here’s a partial list of the most popular destinations for chartering a crewed yacht:

  • Caribbean – the islands of the Caribbean are popular in the winter and spring months, with sailing yachts heavily congregates in the breezy Virgin Islands, and larger motoryachts based in the celebrity-popular cosmopolitan areas like St. Martin and St Barths.
  • Mediterranean – the summer playground for Europeans, charter yachts can be found throughout the Greek islands, as well as along the Italian and French Riviera.  In recent years, new cruising grounds in the Med have become increasingly popular, such as the Spanish Balearic Islands and Croatia.
  • Florida and the Bahamas – unlike Europeans who often take long, multi-week vacations, Americans take shorter holidays, often for no more than a long weekend.  Staying closer to home becomes important when travel days are limited, so the idea of a Florida yacht charter escape is very popular, with the nearby Bahamas a strong option as well.

HOW Can I Afford A Luxury Yacht Charter Vacation?

If you guessed that we would once again go back and look at a resort for the answer – you’re right!

The price options for enjoying a crewed yacht directly compare to the prices of staying at a resort.   Basic resorts in popular destinations can be very affordable for a family vacation, and so too can be the cost of a private yacht charter.  Conversely, ultra exclusive resorts in posh settings charge premium rates – as do the most luxurious private yachts.

To put this into realistic perspective, here’s a sample of yachts and their prices:

  • SAILBOAT – sail yacht MORE MAGIC is a 68 foot Virgin Islands yacht charter vessel with accommodations for up to 6 guests in 3 staterooms. Her all-inclusive charter rates start at $18,000 per week
  • MOTORYACHT – the 80 foot motor yacht JODI LEE offers both Bahamas and Florida yacht charter vacations for up to 6 passengers.  Here base rate is $26,000 per week, plus a little extra to cover food, fuel, and dockage.
  • SUPERYACHT – up to 12 affluent travelers can explore the Mediterranean onboard the 2017 Amels yacht HERE COMES THE SUN, a 272 foot yacht with a crew of 25.  Her weekly rate is Euro €1,200,000 with additional fees for food, fuel, and dockage.

Aerial photo of yacht at anchor with an inflatable slide coming down from the top deck. Multiple jetskis and tenders are racing around in the water around the boat. The water is clear and turquoise.

Top 3 Luxury Yacht Charter Amenities in 2018

Posted on

FLOATING VILLA AMENITIES

The world’s largest yachts continue to grow larger and larger each year.  The ideas of superyacht owners as to what features and amenities will make their, “floating villas” stand out from the crowd also expand.  This demand for over-the-top luxury pushes high-profile yacht designers to continually “reinvent” the ultimate onboard amenities.

No longer is an on-deck Jacuzzi style spa satisfactory. Now, the hot tub must double as a wave-generating swimming pool.  That pool needs a backlit waterfall cascading over the edge of the spa into a smaller reflection pool.  Along a similar innovation path, our company President, Jana Sheeder, recently toured a new build megayacht with designer Evan Marshall.  The Marshall-designed yacht features a sundeck with a sunken-floor lounge area. This area floods with several inches of water. In specific, to create a faux beach atmosphere.  The legs of the chaise lounges sit in the cool water!  Talk about relaxation!

Company President, Jana Sheeder, and our charter team return from the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show.  Many manufacturers and designers display their latest innovations and concepts there.  In addition, our Team takes notes of the latest trends that are becoming more popular with superyacht owners and designers.  Here are the top three amenity design trends seen in 2018.

1.  OVERSIZED WET BARS

Oversized wet bar on a yacht deck

Sundeck bars are larger now.  Previously, their smaller size made room for the storage of watertoys on deck.  As more yachts keep the tenders and toys in garages, the ability to expand ondeck amenities has seen an increase.  This increase results in large outdoor wetbars, built with luxurious stones, polished finishes, and mood lighting.   The bars are focal points ondeck.  They are places where families and friends gather for extended periods.  These areas are perfect for socializing and enjoying the fresh air and sea views.

One of the most magnificent outdoor bars is located on the sundeck of Lurssen yacht SOLANDGE.  The large curved bar is positioned to the port side and boasts an opaque lighting design that creates a glamorous evening hang-out.   This 85 meter Lürssen superyacht was designed by Espen Øeino and has many other notable design features, including a spectacular superyacht fireplace.

2.  LIFESTYLE WELLNESS ROOMS

yacht wellness room that looks out on the ocean - wooden floors and glass doors

Fun, unusable rooms are popular on the largest superyachts.  Amenities from superyacht gyms and spas, to cinemas and nightclubs.  These designs around the owner’s passions and what they think will appeal to yacht charter guests.  Designer Tim Heywood reflects on the trend:

“Lifestyle-specific rooms — from casinos to underwater viewing rooms to other ideas such as snow rooms, meditation spaces, art galleries or anything designed to meet an owner’s particular needs — have all featured in my designs. In fact, our first cryotherapy room is in production, and it won’t be the last.”

Interior designers Redman Whiteley Dixon created an amazing wellness area onboard the 63 meter Feadship motor yacht LADY BRITT.  The standout room in this area is the Finnish sauna.  It opens on to the ocean.  #Namaste …  Charter guests can heat up, then take a plunge in the cool ocean. The wellness area features space for massage and hairdressing.  In addition, the gym’s panoramic sliding glass doors open to the large spa pool on the sundeck.

3.  BEACH CLUBS

Spa pool in beach club of a luxury sailboat

More designers now relegate tenders and water toys to side-opening garages on superyachts.  These prime aft areas redesign with hydraulic balconies and decks. Further, to serve as open-air beach clubs.  First-generation beach clubs are little more than extended swim platforms with tender garages. These are emptied of their contents to make room for a lounge chair or two.  Newer designs offer bars, lounges, and spa access points.  The best of the new generation clubs serve as all-around waterfront entertaining venues.

Rarely do you find beach clubs on sailboats, yet sail yacht AQUIJO is anything but an ordinary sailboat.  The editors of Boat International magazine described her club area.

“As the world’s largest ketch, she has more than enough room to accommodate a spacious beach club, complete with a hammam [turkish steam bath], sauna, and a spectacular spa pool that is illuminated by a large skylight. As if all that wasn’t impressive enough, the watertight aft doors mean that (sail yacht) Aquijo’s beach club can still be used when she’s sailing along at her brisk top speed of 20 knots.”  Amazing…

Incredible jacuzzis and beach clubs abound on the world’s newest superyachts.  Enjoy reading about yet another spectacular yacht, King Baby, at https://www.1800yachtcharters.com/yacht-maven-scores-first-charter-on-yacht-king-baby-edgy-rock-n-roll-themed-superyacht/

Updated – Champagne Names – How to pronounce them?

Posted on

When Champagne gets transported into another country, it’s normal that the pronunciation is adapted to suit the language. However, if you’re curious how to pronounce Champagne names comme il faut (translated = properly)you’re in the right place.

Even if you’re quite confident with French, the names can sometimes be tricky as many originate from other countries such as Germany.

PRONUNCIATIONS

Tip: “on” and “om” sounds are usually nasal sounds in French, such as in Dom Pérignon.

  • Dom Pérignon  Dom Peh-ree-nyon (“g” isn’t pronounced)
  • Veuve Clicquot – Verv Kli-KOH (not voov)
  • Deutz – dirts (French pronunciation with a soft “r”)
  • Ruinart – Rwee-nar (not ruin-art)
  • Piper-Heidsieck – Pee-pay ED-sick
  • Mumm – Moom / Mewm (with a long “u” — 000 — sound)
  • Pol Roger – Pol Roh-JZAY (soft “j”)
  • Louis Roederer – Loo-wee Row-ed-er-ey
  • Bollinger – Bol-an-JZAY (soft “j”)
  • Moët et Chandon – Moh-et et Chan-dawn (not mo-way)
  • Taittinger — [ADDED BY Jana Sheeder of 1800yachtcharters] “TEH ton zhay”

THE MOST POPULAR MISPRONUNCIATION

The one that probably causes the most trip-ups is Moët et Chandon, which is pronounced moh-et eh chan-dawn – and not the commonly-said moh-way… oops.

Finally, you now confidently order a fancy bottle of Champagne on your next holiday to France. >>

In conclusion, remember.  The city of Cannes, France is simply pronounced “can” (not “con”).    The Cannes Film Festival is pronounced CAN (like “an aluminum can,” not cAHn.)
