2 Epic Luxury Yacht Charter Vacations for Spring 2016

Posted on

With industry experts predicting the continued growth of the yacht charter market in 2016, retail charter brokers are anxious to identify new and exciting destinations and opportunities for their clients. With the help of yacht maven Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters, we take a look at two unique 2016 yachting vacations that could be spring’s most epic getaways.

At first glance, the idea of snow skiing and yachting seem mutually exclusive.  Typically, if you want to go boating in the winter or spring, you jet off for the warm waters of the Caribbean. Conversely, a ski vacation normally occurs far away from any yachting destinations, in a mountainous area like Vail or Kitzbühel

All the more reason a combination ski trip and yachting holiday is about as unique as it gets, as one of the world’s largest yachts for hire will be offering heli-skiing charters along the coast of the world’s largest island!

The 254 foot ice-breaking Icon motor yacht LEGEND is offering adventure charters in Greenland, from April through June, 2016.  She features guest accommodations for 26 passengers – perfect for private groups and large families.

Glaciers and icebergs make Greenland a unique destination. The alpine ranges south of the Arctic Circle in western Greenland are known for coastal heli-skiing on peaks up to 6500 feet (2,000 meters) and skiers can glide almost to the edge where the glaciers meet the sea.

Expedition yacht LEGEND profile

As Jana Sheeder explains, the adventure goes far beyond the slopes.  “Motor yacht LEGEND has been specifically outfitted with a wide array of watersports equipment and toys for exploration.  The yacht carries a small submarine for exploring under the ice pack, as well as kayaks, and snowmobiles.  If you’re into adventure and exploration, this yacht has tremendous appeal.”

Onboard amenities include a cinema room, Balinese-style spa, gymnasium, and on-deck Jacuzzi large enough for 16 people.

Rates begin at €75900 per day with a 5 day minimum reservation required.

If skiing and polar exploration is not your thing, an exotic warm-weather escape might be more appealing, especially when you throw in one of the world’s greatest natural spectacles.

The world’s largest wooden sailing yacht is offering a rare opportunity to witness a celestial event in an environmentally vibrant, and culturally rich corner of our world.

Sail yacht LAMIMA is offering a 10-day adventure cruising the waters of Raja Ampat, Indonesia where on March 9, 2016 at 8:58am all onboard will witness a full solar eclipse.

Scientists have said one of the optimal viewing points on the earth to see the full effect of the eclipse is in the area of Raja Ampat,” says Sheeder.  “We often encourage our clients to plan their private yacht charter vacations around the full moon, but experiencing a solar eclipse from an ocean vantage point is truly unique.”

Lamima sailboat profile

Indonesia offers diverse wildlife and world’s best snorkeling and diving sites. Sailing yacht LAMIMA has an extensive watersports inventory including  kayaks, paddleboard, and a full inventory of SCUBA gear for both Padi and Nitrox certified divers.  The crew includes a spa therapist and a local tour guide.
The ALL-INCLUSIVE 10-night charter rate for the solar eclipse excursion is $200,000 for up to 14 guests.  If you can’t make it for the big celestial event, the regular weekly rate is $140,000 and can be pro-rated for trips as short as 5 days.

Sheeder hopes to organize more unique yachting excursions throughout 2016. “We want to deliver the total Superyacht Experience to our clients.  We understand our clients want to immerse themselves and participate in unique cultural events.  Skiing in Greenland and witnessing a solar eclipse in Indonesia are perfect opportunities to experience an epic eco-friendly adventure.  What a great way to reconnect with family and friends, embrace diverse cultures, and rejuvenate mind, body, and spirit!”

28 Passenger Superyacht To Make St. Martin Yacht Charter Debut This Winter

Posted on

The 82.50 meter motor yacht O’MEGA, one of the very few private luxury yacht charter vessels in the world with the capacity for over 12  guests, is heading to the Caribbean for the very first time this winter.

Re-launched in 2004 after a complete remodel from a near-bare hull, super yacht O’MEGA underwent a major refit in 2009, and has had continuous upgrades every year since.  With an excellent crew-to-guest ratio, there are 30 crewmembers onboard to attend to 28 guests in 14 guest staterooms.

O'Mega superyacht underway

While in the Caribbean from early December, 2016 through April 2017, her weekly charter rate is  €525,000 + running expenses.  There is a two week minimum fee for charters during Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

The only other +12 passenger superyacht considering relocation to the Caribbean for the winter is the 36 passenger motor yacht CHRISTINA O, as her owner has expressed interest in the emerging Cuba yacht charter marketplace (now that travel restrictions between the governments of the United States and Cuba have been eased).

Christina O Motoryacht underway

With so few large-capacity yachts in the Caribbean this winter, we expect strong demand for both of these vessels in the area of St. Martin, particularly for St Barts yacht charter clients who invade the small island to celebrate the New Year.

1-800 Yacht Charters has dozens of luxury yachts available in the Caribbean this winter.  Let us Deliver the Superyacht Experience to you and your family and friends this winter.  For more information on yacht charter vessels and destinations, email the yacht charter professionals at

3 Yacht Charter Destinations You Must See | Luxury yacht charter

Posted on

Our friends at Trip Advisor recently sent us an email with some stunning images of 20 awe-inspiring places you must see.  The locations were selected by their members.

Several of the spots were accessible by yacht or could easily be accessed by land during a luxury yacht charter vacation.

From the locations submitted by the members, we’ve selected our favorite three for you to see:

1.  PULPIT ROCK – Ryfylke, Norway.
The Pulpit Rock (“Preikestolen” in Norwegian) soars 604 meters over the Lysefjord. This flat mountain plateau, was most likely carved and formed from melting ice over 10,000 years ago.

Fjord yacht charters in the summertime remain a popular choice, especially among European customers from neighboring Soviet countries.
The Schooner sail yacht MONTIGNE  often offers Norway yacht charter vacations in the summertime. Built by Aegean Yachts, the 2009 super yacht MONTIGNE is a 57 meter (187 foot) three-masted staysail schooner with accommodations for 12 guests.

Her yacht charter rates start at $140,000 per week, plus expenses.

2.  PLITVICE LAKES – Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia.
Founded in 1949, Plitvice is the largest national park in Croatia, drawing more than 1,200,000 visitors annually.  Situated in the mountainous area of central Croatia, the national park connects the Croatian inland with the Adriatic coastal region – a highly popular yachting destination.
The interest in Croatia yacht charters continues to grow each summer, as clients look for alternatives to the crowded anchorages and overpriced marinas in France and Italy.

Motor yacht AIR, Benetti yacht charter vessel MINE GAMES, and James Bond inspired boat, DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER, have all spent time recently cruising the calm waters of the Adriatic yacht charter coastline.

3.  SANTORINI – Cyclades, Greece.
If you’ve ever seen a photograph of blinding-white buildings with blue roofs, juxtaposed against a backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea, chances are you saw a photo of Santorini.  The views of the sea from the terraces of the ancient towns along the cliffs are mesmerizing.
Arguably the most famous island in Greece, Santorini is easily reachable by yacht – just 120 miles southeast from Greece’s mainland.

40 Meter Greek #Yacht Charter Vessel Takes Advance Reservations Prior To Launch

Posted on

AQUA LIBRA white Sunseeker motoryacht profile

She’s not scheduled to splash down until 2018, but that’s not keeping eager Greek yacht charter clients from placing deposits for vacations next summer on this new 40 meter yacht.

The Sunseeker 131 motor yacht AQUA LIBRA 131 is still in her build shed in Dorset, but the buzz surrounding the opportunity to secure a brand new yacht to explore the Greek islands has prospective customers stepping forward to secure prime dates.

“Two reservations have already been secured for summer 2018,”  says a smiling Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters“One client has secured 4 nights in late June and another grabbed the first 14 days of July.  It’s always so great to see dates locked down a full year in advance.”

While it is true that affluent travelers are not inclined to secure private luxury yacht charter vacations so far in advance, they will pony up early when they see a unique opportunity.  Motor yacht AQUA LIBRA 131 presents such a scenario.

For years, Greece has remained one of the most popular summer cruising destinations –  dozens of islands can be visited, and the number of historical points of interest dated to the beginning of civilization are in the hundreds.   Oh yeah – the warm weather in the summer is spectacular!

But for all the destination’s allure, the yachts that offered charters in Greece were often considered inferior in overall comfort and quality to those yachts HNWI’s could charter in France and Monaco, along the Côte d’Azur.

Greek yacht operators, in a testament to their seafaring heritage, often offered wooden ships, called motorsailers (or “gulets” as they are known in neighboring Turkey) to the charter market.  As charming as these traditional vessels are, they simply lack the sophistication of ultra-modern superyachts.  Whereas you are hard-pressed to find a motorsailer with an open-air Jacuzzi-style tub on the deck, it is nearly impossible to find a superyacht that doesn’t have at least one hot tub on deck – as well as other luxury amenities like onboard cinemas, spas, beauty salons, and helipads.

Yacht owners in Greece, and indeed the Greek people themselves, are a wonderful and proud lot – and they should be!  They live in the cradle of civilization, and so much of our modern technical gains in math and the sciences can be traced back to the Hellenic culture.  It is understandable to see why they have held to their traditional ways – and their traditional yachts.

Still, HNWI’s want what they want – and for the well-heeled, a superyacht filled with modern amenities is the preferred mode of transport during an ultraluxury holiday.

That leads us to Sunseeker motoryacht AQUA LIBRA 131, now accepting charter reservations a full year before her build is completed.  The British-built tri-deck Sunseeker 131 epitomizes everything that HNWI’s seek in their superyacht experience: accommodations in sublime surroundings, immense scale, and a layout that lends to relaxing and socializing with friends and special guests.

Here’s how Sunseeker describes their own 131 model:

“Expertly finished using ultra-modern materials and techniques, the 131 Yacht is one of the finest examples of modern day superyacht building. The main deck features a lounge, separate dining area and full galley, while on the upper deck you’ll find the sky lounge, cocktail bar and access to the skydeck; where comfort and lavishness reach new levels. As impressive out in open water as it is in the harbour, this icon of design is unlike any other.”

Guest accommodations are available for up to 10 passengers in 5 staterooms:

  • Master cabin – situated on the main deck, with king size bed, private dressing room, and his and hers bathrooms
  • Two VIP cabins – each with queen sized beds
  • Two twin cabins – convertible to double cabins with king size bed.  One cabin also features a Pullman berth.

As you would expect, all staterooms offer ensuite facilities.

For indoor entertainment , the yacht offers a Sonos AV System, with video on demand, as well as Apple TVs, and full satellite services.  Of course, the yacht offers Wi-Fi on all decks.

Don’t plan on staying indoors too long, because Greece is all about the scenery and the warm Aegean sea.  To enjoy the ocean, this new yacht will have a complete inventory of watersports equipment, including:

  • 6.25 metre Williams tender
  • 4.5 meter RIB tender
  • 2 SeaDoo personal watercraft
  • SeaBob
  • Water skis for adults
  • Waterskis for children
  • Wakeboard
  • Towable Tubes
  • Towable Banana
  • SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard)
  • Inflatable 2-person kayak
  • Inflatable 3-person water sofa
  • Fishing equipment
  • Snorkel gear

AQUA LIBRA motoryacht aft deck with young mother speaking to little girl and young father reading to little boy

There are many other Sunseeker models currently in charter in the Mediterranean.  While builders with classical style yachts such as Lurssen and Benetti tend to attract older charterers, Sunseeker yacht charters appeal to young entrepreneurs and their families.  There’s a modern, contemporary “Vibe” onboard a Sunseeker.  No shot at Lurssen and the classic models – Sunseeker simply offers a different feel, and for a different charter client.

Other Sunseeker vessels currently available include:

Sunseeker 116 motor yacht FLEUR

Sunseeker 130 yacht THUMPER

Sunseeker 155 superyacht PRINCESS AVK

As the new AQUA LIBRA 131 Sunseeker continues to attract attention – and bookings, it is likely that more and more owners of new-build yachts will forgo the traditional Western Med ports of France and Monaco, and position for the summer in the Eastern Med in Greece – Opa!!!

Even the little Kallikantzari hobgoblins will crawl out from the underground when this beautiful, new yacht is delivered to Greece next summer — like a Christmas gift during the summertime!

5 Cool Activities To Push Your Luxury Yacht Charter Over the Top

Posted on

Looking to throw a little wrinkle into the typical yachting holiday in the Western Mediterranean?  Our charter department put their heads together and came up with 5 cool things to do to make your next yachting holiday a truly unique experience.

SAMPLE Lobster at Le Grand Hotel de Cala Rossa – Corsica.

The French island of Corsica is often overlooked by charterers who spend most of their time exploring nearby Sardinia.  Corsica is downright beautiful, with a colorful history and unique culture and atmosphere. You’ll find an eclectic mix of old world charm infused with modern French style.

Corsica - Le Grand Hotel de Cala Rossa beach at Calla Marcella

For a truly gourmet French food experience, visit Le Grand Hotel de Cala Rossa. The elegant décor, stunning ocean views and private jetty make this a fantastic destination for a late afternoon lunch.  The seasonal creations of chef Pascal Cayeux, rival the finest fare in mainland France. Pascla creates gourmet twists on traditional fare, with vegetables and herbs from the kitchen’s own garden.

RELAX on the Beach at Cala Marcella – Menorca.

The interest in a Balearic Island yacht charter experience continues to grow each summer, as more yachts secure the required Spanish charter licenses to explore Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca.  While the nightclubs of Ibiza have their own appeal, the idea of a pristine beach sounds pretty food as well.

Balearic islands Menorca beach

Take for example the beach at Cala Marcella.  You’ll need your yacht’s tender to get there as this beach is only accessible by boat (lucky you).  On most weekdays, you can almost be sure to find a quiet spot on the white sands of Cala Marcella  [Tip: avoid the weekend, as crowds of local boaters invade this idyllic cove].  If you feel adventurous, bring a pair of walking shoes ashore, as there is a walking route that you can hike to the neighboring beach of Macaraletta.  Here, you can walk to the top of the cliff and experience some of the best ocean views in all of the Balearic islands.

EXPLORE the Blue Marino Underwater Caves – Sardinia.

At the base of the 110 meter high cliffs of Cappo Caccia, along the northwest corner of Sardinia, lies the entrance to the Grotto de Neptuno – a stalactite-filled cavern and saltwater lake.  Land-based visitors can enter by climbing down 654 steps from the top of the cliff to explore the underground grotto. You on the other hand, can simply have your captain nose your yacht into the entrance of the caves!

Blue Marino Underwater Caves at Cappo Caccia - Grotto de Neptuno Sardinia

For snorkelers and divers, the adventure gets deeper at the nearby Nereo Cave, considered the biggest marine cave in the Western Mediterranean.  With 10 entrances, arches and tunnels, novices can snorkel in waist high water while experienced/certified divers can dive down to depths of 35 meters.

REJUVENATE your Spirit at the Luminaria – Pisa

You’ve missed this event for this year, but it’s never too early to plan your 2017 summer charter.  Every June 16, on the eve of the feast day of Saint Ranieri, the city of Pisa is aglow with 70,000 “lumini” (candles in glass containers). The reflection along the Arno river is mesmerizing.  It’s a peaceful, tranquil setting and the warmth of the Pisa residents will touch your heart.  If this doesn’t remind you how the superyacht experience allows you to embrace diverse cultures, nothing will!

QUENCH your Thirst and Go Wine Tasting with Monks – Cannes

Just off the coast of Cannes, in the South of France, lies the small island of Saint Honorat. Here, visitors will find a very unusual vineyard, with 8 hectares of vines cared for entirely by the monks of the Abbey of Lerins.  The monks tend to every aspect of winemaking, from planting the vineyard, to harvesting the grapes, to making and bottling the wine.

Wine tasting with the Monks of Saint Honorat and the Abbey of Lerins in Cannes France

Truly unique vintages found nowhere else, we recommend the Saint Cyprien Viognier with a seasonal Mediterranean meal served by the monks in their own restaurant.  After dinner, you can finish the day with a tasting of the fruit liqueurs as you enjoy the company of the monks and their staff, in this peaceful Monastic enclave.

67M Sailboat Prepares for Antarctica Yacht Charter in February

Posted on

We just received word Alloy sail yacht VERTIGO has committed to accept charters in Patagonia and Antarctica, starting February 2016.  Rates are set at Euro 295,000 per week plus running expenses for a maximum 12 guests.

Having recently wrapped up her Monaco yacht charter season, the luxury sailing yacht spent the month of October in Singapore for maintenance work prior to her journey to the southern hemisphere in November.

Vertico sail yacht

Built by Alloy Yachts, and designed by Philippe Briand, the 67 meter yacht VERTIGO is the largest sailing yacht built in the southern hemisphere.

Her amenities and features include:

  • Loft-style interiors, custom-designed by Christian Liaigre
  • Oversized Jacuzzi hot tub with retractable sunpads, Bimini covers, glass screens, and air conditioning on the Deck
  • Midarette gymnasium with direct sea access
  • Open-air cinema screen
  • 4 tenders, including an 8 meter Limo tender with removable roof
  • Sailing dinghies, kayaks, paddleboards, scuba equipment, inflatables, and towable toys

We find the idea of a Patagonia yacht charter immensely intriguing.  This is a sparsely populated area located at the southern tip South America, with the western coastline belonging to Chile and the eastern side, part of Argentina. The opportunities for exploration and adventure are numerous, as this region comprises the southernmost portion of the Andes mountains.  Just east of the mountains, there is great bio-diversity with deserts, steppes, and grasslands. The western coast of Patagonia borders the Pacific ocean, and the eastern coast borders the Atlantic ocean.

A One-Day Caribbean Yacht Charter Can Be Fun!

Posted on

While crewed sail boat charters and bareboat charter vacations normally last 5 to 7 nights, not everyone has the time for a multi-night term luxury yacht charter. In this economy, saving up for a special bareboat charter or luxury yacht charter holiday might mean postponing until 2010.

Now for the good news – sailboat charters can be as short as one day and are the perfect compliment to a land-based Caribbean island vacation.

Let’s take a look at a single-day luxury yacht charter escape in the British Virgin Islands (also known as the BVI or BVI’s):

There are four major inhabited islands in the BVI, as well as dozens of (nearly 60) smaller islands, cays, and rocks scattered throughout the archipelago. Of course, the fun way to see these sights is by boat on a luxury sailing charter.

You can rent a small Caribbean yacht charter sailboat or a fast powerboat for the day in Road Town, Nanny Cay, West End, or several other locations. Some experience driving a powerboat or basic chart-reading skills are important to ensure you have a pleasurable day.

A great trip could start from Road Town, Tortola and head south across the Sir Francis Drake Channel to Peter Island. You can tie up to the dock in Sprat Bay, or anchor off the beach in Deadman’s Bay and swim ashore (remember to wear your water socks). Visitors are welcome in the public areas, the boutique, and the beach grill.

girl swimming over a reef and camera showing fish underneath her and rock formation and sky above

From Peter Island, it’s a short boat ride to Norman Island. This is author Robert Louis Stevenson’s legendary Treasure Island, and the source of countless tales of pirates and buried chests of gold. Today, the island is uninhabited except for a small restaurant on the beach in the Bight. Anchored in the bay is the old ship, William Thornton, affectionately known by bareboat charter lovers and the locals as the “Willy T,” a trading vessel converted to a bar and restaurant. It’s a great stop for a little “pirate” ambiance. Be warned – on holiday weekends, the Willy T is not appropriate for kids as it takes on a bawdy “adults only” atmosphere.

Just outside the bay are the Caves. These are more like grottoes and are a true snorkeler’s delight. You can tie up your boat to one of the National Park moorings and swim in. Don’t be surprised if a school of tropical fish swim alongside you, looking for a handout. The locals ask that you resist the temptation to feed the little critters, however. Human food is not healthy for the fish and may do them great harm in the long run.

After snorkeling at the Caves, it is a short boat ride to The Indians. These rock outcroppings are the size of houses and full of nesting seabirds in the summer. The waters around the rocks are teeming with fish of every shape and color. One local describes a swim here as a magical experience: “Floating among the fish, corals and sea fans will make you feel like Peter Pan flying through an enchanted forest.”

If the sun is still high in the sky, and you still feel fresh for more adventure, zip over to Salt Island. You can tie up to the dock and walk around the abandoned houses to the salt pond where workers harvest and sell sea salt. If you still have any get-up-and-go in your tank, hop back on your boat and cruise around the corner to the wreck of the HMS Rhone, the BVI’s first underwater park. Snorkel over the wreck and try to imagine what it looked like before it sank in 1867!

By now, you realize you are on “island time.” There’s little reason to hurry back to Tortola, unless you have an early dinner reservation at your hotel or resort. Assuming you are in the island groove, we suggest a cruise east to Cooper Island. Accessible only by boat, this island has a few rental homes and a tiny resort that’s looks like a vacation postcard from the water – palm trees and long, white sand beach. By now, you must be hungry from a morning/afternoon of exploring. Drop in a local restaurant for a late lunch. With a full belly and a big smile, it’s just a short sail or cruise back to Tortola.

There are many other itineraries for a day trip by boat. Your hotel concierge can recommend the best local boat rental operators and give you some ideas as to where to go and what to see there. You can go fast on a powerboat or slower on a sailboat – the choice is yours. Either way, a day boat trip around the British Virgin Islands will be the highlight of your land-based island holiday!

Sherakhan motoryacht at anchor with inflatable slide deployed from bowSeems growing consumer demand to rent a private yacht in a unique destination has prompted another superyacht owner to relocate for the upcoming winter season.
On the heels of the recent announcement by the 64 meter Benetti motor yacht SILVER ANGEL to
relocate to the Indian Ocean, word comes that the 228-foot motor yacht SHERAKHAN will relocate to  Antarctica this winter.
Motoryacht SHERAKHAN  first visited Antarctica in 2010. Her return trip will be in January and February 2013, with two confirmed charters on the books.  The superyacht will remain in Antarctica during March 2013 if there is additional charter interest.  Another option the owner is considering is a relocation to Chile, Patagonia, or the Brazilian Amazon to accommodate requests for charters through April.
In May, the megayacht will travel to the Mediterranean for the summer 2013 charter season.
This custom-built 70 meter vessel is ideal for large families or corporate incentive charters, as she is able to accommodate as many as 26 guests. Amenities include a spa deck, an impressive two-level dining room, and an extra-large hot tub on the sun deck.
