Curved Glasses Make People Drink Alcohol Faster?

Posted on

QUESTION

Are you getting plastered on beer more often than you should? A group of British researchers think you can blame it on your glass!

CURVED GLASS

According to Dr. Angela Atwood of the University of Bristol’s School of Experimental Psychology, drinking out of a curved glass makes you drink beer faster. She came to this conclusion after testing 160 social drinkers with straight and curved glasses.
Photograph collage of 2 drinking glasses. On the left, it reads, box A,. The glass is straight. On the right, it reads, Box B. The glass in that box is curved (thinner at the bottom, and wider at the top).

Straight glass vs. Curved glass and alcohol intake

CURVE VS. STRAIGHT

When drinking beer from a curved glass, the participants seemed to drink their beer twice as fast as from a straight one.

GLASS HALF EMPTY

Atwood theorized that this is due to drinkers being unable to tell when the glass is half empty when using a curved glass. This causes people to drink faster, became more inebriated, then have more difficulty judging how full the next glass is.

HAMMERED?

The cycle goes on, and the drinkers gets hammered faster than folks drinking their favorite brew from a straight glass.

THE RESULT

So, the next time you are at anchor during a Caribbean yacht charter, and your hostess offers you a cold beer in a curved glass, raise a toast to Bristol’s Dr. Atwood as you relax, wasting away in Margaritaville…

Smartphone App Promising For Yacht Charters

Posted on

Smartphone app, PositionIt

SMARTPHONE APP FOR YACHTING

Researchers at the University of Missouri develop a smartphone app that determines location, speed, and direction of distant objects.

POSITIONIT

The PositionIt app combines a smartphone’s GPS, compass, and imaging capabilities to calculate the exact location of distant objects and track their speed and direction.

PRACTICAL USES

Practical uses might include a single off-the-shelf device to replace various pieces of equipment carried by soldiers on the battlefield, or even by golfers to judge the distance to the green when playing golf.

COMPANY PRESIDENT COMMENTS

Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters, sees both fun and practical applications in her industry.

“We envision crews using this app to track other vessels during Mediterranean yacht charter regattas, like the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta,” says Sheeder.

“Can you imagine children on crewed catamaran charters in the Caribbean using the app to track a pod of dolphins or whales in the distance?  The advantage of a smartphone is that it provides so many tools in a single, affordable package.”

WHAT DOES THE SMARTPHONE APP DO?

The researchers say the PositionIt app can calculate the exact location of distant objects, both when the size of the object is known and when it isn’t.  Additionally, the software can also track the direction and calculate the speed of a moving target, like a luxury sailing charter vessel underway, from a short video captured on the smartphone.

PROTOTYPE

A prototype version of the targeting and tracking software is currently undergoing testing. Advances in smartphone hardware are also expected to improve the accuracy of the new app. Improvements in GPS accuracy, battery life, and camera resolution will allow the app to make even more accurate observations.

LORO PIANA SUPERYACHT REGATTA

The next LORO PIANA SUPERYACHT REGATTA is scheduled for June 4-8, 2013 in Porto Cervo,  Sardinia. First launched in 2008, this regatta kicks off the Mediterranean cruising season and attracts an ever-increasing fleet of sailing yachts. For instance, 34 meter sail yacht ANNAGINE and the 57 meter Royal Huisman yacht TWIZZLE.

Although previously scheduled to head to the Caribbean for the winter, she now remains in Europe.  All previously advertised winter special charter offers have been withdrawn.

WHY THE SCHEDULE CHANGE?

Not relocating to the Caribbean allows the yacht to complete her 5 year survey.  It also enables her to undergo winter maintenance.
Completion of the safety survey and maintenance project will insure the yacht will be in top condition for the summer 2013 Mediterranean yacht charter season.

RATE

With accommodations for 10 guests, rates begin at  € 322,000 EUROS per week.
