Can sale of yacht affect vacation?
Did you know? Your fully-executed yacht charter agreement is not guaranteed. It’s not guaranteed that your yacht will be delivered to your desired port of embarkation on the start date of your vacation. Many charterers understand about mechanical problems or acts of nature, like hurricanes. These things can force the cancellation or the delay of a planned yachting holiday. Few realize the sale of the yacht can also result in a cancelled charter. Unfortunately, there is minimal recourse for the customer.
This is similar to many segments of the receding global economy. Sales of the largest yachts are in a major slump. Financial woes push increasing numbers of yacht owners to put their vessels up for sale. The result is a glut of yachts for sale with prices dropping each month.
“The fact that owners are actively marketing their yachts for sale, means charter clients must be keenly aware of whether or not their chosen yacht for their vacation is for sale,” states Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters and The SailAway Group. “Most charter contracts have an escape clause for owners if they sell their yachts before the charter. Of course funds are returned to the customer, but there is no guarantee a suitable replacement yacht can be provided for the same price and the same desired charter dates.”
To hedge the odds in favor of the charterer, Sheeder and her team try to promote newer-model yachts to their prospective clients. “Statically, owners will want to enjoy their new yachts for a year or two before considering their sale. We try to take advantage of this situation and promote newer yachts to our clients, to minimize the exposure to the potential sale of a yacht.”
Sheeder encourages charterers to ask their charter brokers about the sales status of any yacht that they consider renting. Ideally, they should seek a yacht that is not listed for sale. Says Sheeder, “If considering a yacht that is for sale, ask your broker for an analysis of how actively the owner is trying to sell, and see if there have been numerous or recent price reductions. Try to avoid any charter yacht that is actively for sale – or you could end up high and dry for your vacation.”

The Palumbo superyacht facility hosts one of the most famous, and certainly the largest yacht charter vessel in the world. The 133 meter yacht SERENE visits. She stuns — her exterior design and engineering by Espen Oeino and interior styling by Reymond Langton Design.
She experienced extensive renovations in the past two years. The Palumbo refit and repair yard offers a 160 meter graving dock. In addition, a covered 140 meter dock, and more than 400 meters of quay for alongside repairs. Visiting yacht crews can enjoy various on-site amenities. For instance, an on-site gym and game room. The Malta airport is also just a short drive away. It offers direct flights to most major cities in Europe.
As the charter season draws to a close, the Palumbo yard is seeing an increase in activity, with Fincantieri yacht SERENE just one of several superyachts to have confirmed bookings at the refit and service center.

Yacht charter vessel Project 1016 is finally in the hands of a new owner after a devastating onboard fire during her build. A McMullen & Wing 50 meter Diamond-class expedition yacht, ex-Starfish splashed down in Auckland, New Zealand in January. She is now ready for outfitting and sea trials.
The yacht known as superyacht Y/N 1016 is the largest yacht to date built by McMullen and Wing. She has a distinctive muscular and purposeful appearance and is the first yacht in the Diamond Series. The 45 meter South Pacific charteryacht, motor yacht BIG FISH, also follows in her design footsteps.
The yacht name was originally motor yacht StarFish. She was commissioned by Richard Beattie, chairman of Aquos Yachts, and the owner of Big Fish. An early-morning blaze in the building where StarFish was housed caused significant damage to yacht. She was nearly 75% complete at the time. Rather than adding money to repair damage to the new yacht, Beattie put the yacht up for sale. A new owner stepped forward in 2014 to complete the project.
Only 18 months behind her original planned launch, project 1016 (ex Project StarFish) accommodates 10 to 12 guests in five luxurious cabins. Her interior has natural materials, creating a relaxed, modern ambiance. The owner’s suite is located on the bridge deck aft and opens onto a private aft deck. This deck provides exclusive privacy and spectacular views.
Airy spaces flow onto large outdoor decks on every level. Center balconies fold out from her body. These offer the ultimate sunbathing locations suspended over the water. The lowered aft cockpit is a protected area for both deep-sea fishing and lounging. For future private yacht rental use, an extensive fleet of tenders and toys is stored onboard.
The new owner takes delivery in early 2016. He then starts an around-the-world tour. His journey begins in Auckland, then goes to the South Pacific and beyond.
We expect her charter entry in 2017.

Top 100 World’s Largest Yachts, 2015

UPDATE. 32 people responded, and 28 had the right answer! So, how did we react? We sent out eco-totebags to ALL of them. That was FUN! Thank you for playing, everybody! The question? Who built motoryacht AZZAM? The answer? Lurssen Yachts built the yacht in 2013.
The year 2015 started out with a forecast of ten brand new superyachts scheduled for completion this year, all of which when launched would be ranked in the, “Top 100 of the World’s Largest Yachts.”
With the year quickly drawing to a close, it turns out 8 of the 10 were completed and launched on schedule – a testament to their builder’s ability to deliver a yacht on schedule (although only the builder and owner know for sure if the yacht was also delivered, “on budget”).
Here are the 8 newest entries to the list of the 2015 world’s largest yachts, along with their position in the top 100:

Dutch über-builder Feadship leads the way with three top 100 megayachts, with Germany’s Lurssen Yachts delivering two, including the largest newest yacht launched in 2015 – the 123 meter motor yacht GOLDEN ODYSSEY.
Private yacht charter clients might be disappointed that only one of these new yachts is immediately slated to enter the yacht rental market – the Abeking & Rasmussen yacht ROMEA. Based in the Med, The Monaco yacht charter vessel has set her 2015 inaugural season rental rate at Euro 875,000 per week [plus running expenses, of course!].
Feadship and Lurssen enthusiasts don’t despair – these builders have plenty of behemoth yachts available for hire, including the 85.10 meter Lurssen yacht SOLANDGE, and the 81 meter Feadship yacht AIR.
