Jan Verkerk, owner of the 253-foot Icon motor yacht LEGEND, has given us the green light to accept reservations in Antarctica for the upcoming season, from January 17 through February 18.
Originally built in 1973, Icon expedition yacht LEGEND underwent a complete rebuild and restoration in 2015. Now complete, she is the only luxury yacht charter ice-breaker vessel in the world.
For Verkerk, this is his second superyacht restoration project – the other being the highly popular 228 foot motor yacht SHERAKHAN – a fixture in the Mediterranean charter market for the past 5 seasons.
Active charterers will delight in the opportunities for adventure offered on M/Y LEGEND. With accommodations for 26 guests, and space to carry a helicopter and a submarine, the possibilities for cold-weather adventure are endless. Of course, Verkerk made certain to include the mandatory superyacht amenities as well: gymnasium, Balinese spa, sauna, beauty salon, movie theater and swimming pool. There’s even a medical suite, for any emergencies.
After spending a few weeks in Antarctica, the yacht will head to Greenland for the summer charter season.

In the hands of a new owner after a devastating onboard fire during her build, a McMullen & Wing 50 meter Diamond-class expedition yacht splashed down in Auckland, New Zealand in January, ready for outfitting and sea trials.
The largest yacht to date built by New Zealand’s McMullen and Wing, the yacht known as superyacht Y/N 1016 continues the distinctive muscular and purposeful appearance as the first yacht in the Diamond Series, the 45 meter South Pacific and Tahiti yacht charter vessel, motor yacht BIG FISH.
Originally to be named motor yacht StarFish, she was commissioned by Richard Beattie, chairman of Aquos Yachts, and the owner of Big Fish. In August 2012, an early-morning blaze in the shed where StarFish was being built caused significant damage to the nearly 75% completed yacht. Beattie cut his losses and put the yacht up for sale. A new owner stepped forward in 2014 to complete the project.
Only 18 months behind her original planned launch, project 1016 (ex Project StarFish) will accommodate 10 to 12 guests in five luxurious cabins. Interior decoration is made up of natural materials, creating a relaxed, modern ambiance. The impressive owner’s suite is located on the bridge deck aft and opens onto a private aft deck, providing exclusive privacy and spectacular views.
Throughout her interior, light, airy spaces will flow onto large external decks on all levels. Bulwark balconies will fold out from her hull, offering the ultimate sunbathing locations suspended over the water. The lowered aft cockpit is a protected area designed for both deep-sea fishing and lounging. In anticipation of future private yacht charter use, an extensive fleet of tenders and toys will also be stored onboard.
After taking delivery in early 2016, the owner will start a global circumnavigation in Auckland before moving on to the South Pacific and the rest of the world.
