The Hot New Trends in Superyacht Fashion 2021

Posted on

HAUTE COUTURE IS OUT — URBAN IS IN

The Winter/Fall superyacht charter season has arrived. Fortunately, most island destinations have lifted their travel bans.  The luxury superyacht charter fleet is making its way to the Bahamas and the Caribbean.  Indeed, everyone’s favorite rendezvous point, St Barts, is ready for business.  Every hotel, beach club, and resort (except for one) is reopened.  The harbor’s annual superyacht fireworks display on New Year’s Eve promises to be bigger and better than ever.  Yachting fashion trends abound.

So what will well-traveled women be wearing on their yachts this season?  Here’s a clue:  Look for traditional yacht club attire to give way to “Urban resort wear.”

That’s the buzz on the docks as 2020 winds down, and “yachties” start planning their Winter/Fall escapes.

HOW WE ARRIVED AT WANDERLUST

Certainly, we’ve all seen it.  Covid-19 travel restrictions, lockdowns, and working from home have created a fashion, “new normal.”  Significantly, couture and business attire have been cast aside.  Who needs to dress up for a Zoom meeting when casual wear will do?  Blouses, blazers, heck – even resort-casual clothing now feels restrictive and confining.

We’re yearning for freedom…for the opportunity to once again get out and explore.

THE TREND

Look for statement pieces to reflect the fusion of workwear and leisurewear – all inspired by warm-weather destinations.  The islands offer warm waters and gentle breezes year-round.  Fall collections will integrate lightweight and breathable materials. Denim, cotton, and poplin will lead the way. Of course, some synthetics will remain – to add a bit of stretch where needed.  Still, natural, sustainably-sourced materials will be front and center.

Simply put, Urbanwear is effortless and empowering.

Get your passports ready, ladies – the islands and the hottest clothing trends are calling your name…

TAKE A LOOK

Here are three examples of this season’s hottest yacht fashions, selected by the fashionistas at 1-800 Yacht Charters.

CULOTTES & SLEEVELESS TOPS

Perfect for socializing on the sundeck of your yacht.  Tuck in the top and you’re ready for dinner ashore…

Photograph of a dark-haired girl wearing khaki-colored culottes and a white sleeveless top. She is facing the camera. She is wearing white sneakers. She is carrying a beige flat tote bag with a cat drawing on it in her right hand, and she has nothing in her left hand. There is a rattan chair with white cushion on her left side, and there is a wooden table on her right side. There are 2 books on the table, as well as a bud vase with a single thistle-like grey flower stem in it. There is a beige wall behind her. There are paintings propped against the wall on the floor on her right side.

TROPICAL HALTER TOPS OVER JEANS

Looking to do a little duty-free shipping along the boardwalk in Philipsburg, St Maarten?  This fresh, island look defines today’s modern yachtswoman.

NAUTICAL T-SHIRTS & SIDE POCKET SHORTS

You’ve got this, girl! Stay cool and wow the crew as you climb into your yacht’s tender.  It’s a short boat ride from your superyacht to the shoreline in Gustavia, St Barts for a beach picnic and barbeque.

Photograph of an Asian girl in nautical striped short sleeved shirt with white side-pocket shorts. She is facing the camera. The photo includes the top of her head down to her feet. She is wearing white flat sandals. She is holding a white bowler hat with black band in her right hand. Her left hand is on her left hip. She is looking toward the left side of the photograph. There is a rattan chair with white cushion on it beside her on her right side, and a small wooden table on her left side. The table has 2 bud vases on it with flower stems and 1 grey thistle-like flower in each.

What is Included in a Yacht Charter?

Posted on

LET’S GO YACHTING!

The popularity of private luxury yacht charter vacations continues to rise.  One reason?   The desire of travelers to minimize Covid-19 exposure while on vacation.  Indeed, charter yacht holidays are considered among the safest vacation options.  When you are on a private yacht, only your family and your crew are present.  Important to note:  the crew is tested for the virus prior to your arrival].  Compare chartering to staying in a hotel.  Certainly, you and your family can potentially come into contact with many employees and guests in a hotel or upscale resort.

Perhaps you are considering your first vacation on a charter yacht.  Luxury certainly awaits you – but what else can you expect?  Specifically, what is included when you rent a yacht?

Aerial photo of yacht at anchor with an inflatable slide coming down from the top deck. Multiple jetskis and tenders are racing around in the water around the boat. The water is clear and turquoise.

BAREBOAT OR CREWED?

Let’s begin with a small distinction – and an assumption.  For this blog, we are referring to “crewed”  (with crew) charter yachts. Alternately, some travelers rent a bareboat.  What is the distinction?

BAREBOAT

A bareboat is a boat you operate on your own. For example, in the same way that you rent a car, you rent a boat and operate it yourself.  Of course, this assumes you are qualified to operate a boat – and have a cruising resume to prove it!

CREWED YACHT

In this blog, we are focusing on “crewed” yachts.  A crewed yacht simply means you are the onboard guests – not the operators.  A crewed yacht is a yacht with a crew.  A talented staff of professional mariners handles all aspects of operations – from navigating to cooking and cleaning.

“ALL-INCLUSIVE”

The price of a crewed yacht for hire includes the yacht, the crew, and the use of onboard amenities and water toys.  However, there are more items that may or may not be included.

To understand what else is included in a charter vacation, we must begin with an important distinction:  Is the price quoted “all-inclusive” or “plus expenses?”

Most all-inclusive charters include your meals and basic beverages (sodas, water, and non-premium alcohol).  Furthermore, they also include the fuel needed to operate the yacht, as well as any dockage fees.  Normally, local taxes and requisite government cruising permits are included as well.

Please note – some “all-inclusive” yachts do not cover the local taxes and cruising permits.  Make sure to read the fine print before signing your charter agreement.

As a general rule of thumb, all-inclusive charters are commonly available on smaller (40 to 80 foot) sailing yachts based in the Caribbean.  Some smaller motor yachts also offer all-inclusive pricing in the Caribbean.  All-inclusive pricing is uncommon in the Western Mediterranean (Spain, Italy, France, etc.).  Yachts in the Eastern Mediterranean (primarily Greece) offer a hybrid version of all-inclusive pricing.  Specifically, food and basic beverages are included, but fuel and dockage are not.

SEE the Top Three Reasons Celebrities Love Yacht Charters

SCUBA DIVING

Many all-inclusive yachts offer extra services for an additional fee. For example, the yacht you are considering for your vacation might be all-inclusive, yet charge a separate fee for the use of onboard SCUBA diving equipment.

SPECIAL REQUESTS

“Special requests” can also add to the total price of an all-inclusive yacht charter. As outlined above, beverages and non-premium alcohol are normally included.   However, requests for specific premium brands and/or vintage wines and champagnes will be charged to you as an additional expense.

“PLUS EXPENSES”

Most larger yachts for hire opt for an a-la-carte approach to what is included in the charter fee. Yes, the charter rate includes the yacht and crew and the use of amenities and toys.  The similarity to an all-inclusive charter ends there.

Large yachts, both in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean employ “plus expenses” pricing.  The concept is quite simple and straight forward.  All expenses related to the operation of the yacht during the charter are the responsibility of the charterer.

RUNNING EXPENSES

Certain expenses are commonly referred to as “running expenses.”  They include but are not limited to, food, all beverages, fuel, dockage, and any applicable taxes and cruising permits.

SO HOW CAN I BUDGET?

At this point, you might be wondering, “How can I budget for these running expenses, since I won’t know the total expenditures until the conclusion of the charter?”  It’s a great question.  To avoid confusion and possible embarrassment, yachts that operate “plus expenses” collect a deposit from the charterer before the trip begins.  This deposit is referred to as an “Advance Provisioning Allowance” or  “APA.”  Most yachts require an APA deposit equal to 30-35% of the charter fee.  Historically, yacht captains have calculated a typical charter incurs about 30% more than the actual charter fee in running expenses.

APA FUNDS

Captains use the APA funds they have on hand to pay for the running expenses throughout the tip.  For example, they use the funds to pay for fuel, and for dockage.

STEP ABOARD a Superyacht with Yacht Maven, Jana Sheeder

THE CAPTAIN’S EXPENSE LOG

A Captain keeps a detailed log of all expenditures during the charter. At the end of the charter, the Captain presents a detailed expense report to the lead charter guest.  Any remaining funds are returned to the charterer.

SHORTAGE?

Sometimes, there is a shortage. In this case, the charterer owes additional funds to the captain before departing the yacht.   Of course, you are probably thinking, “What if I don’t have enough funds on hand to cover the shortage?”   No worries!  Captains monitor the expenses throughout the charter. If they sense there might be a shortage, they will come to the lead charter guests and explain the situation.  If necessary, most charter guests simply wire additional funds into the yacht’s APA account.

OVERAGE?

In the event of an APA overage, the lead client decides the distribution.  Funds either return to the client or, as if often the case, the monies apply to a crew gratuity.

Where Are They Now? Below Deck Yachts

Posted on

IN THE BEGINNING

Can you imagine a reality-based TV show that chronicles the lives of crew members who live aboard a luxury yacht charter vessel?  The cameras follow the shipmates as they prepare the yacht for the arrival of their charter clients.  Of course, like all intriguing reality shows, there needs to be plenty of personal conflict.  Maybe the drama could come from the challenges of living together in tight quarters, for weeks at a time?

Creators Rebecca Taylor-Henning and Doug Henning imagined just such a show.  They pitched their idea to the executives at cable network, Bravo. They named their show, Below Deck.

Bravo liked what they saw.  Television audiences did as well.

Below Deck is now in its seventh season.  A spin-off show, Below Deck – Mediterranean is in its third season.  A second spinoff is premiering its first season in 2020: Below Deck – Sailing Yacht.

Photograph of 9 members of the Below Deck television series. Everyone is standing with their hands on their hips. All are white or khaki shorts or skirts and navy blue shirts. The chef in the photo is wearing all black. The words, Below Deck, with a yellow anchor (the Below Deck logo) is above the crew members. The background of the photo is blue sky and white puffy clouds

BELOW DECK CREW – BRAVO TV – REALITY SHOW

LUCKY SEVEN

Seven power (not sail) superyachts have appeared in the Below Deck series.

Motor Yacht HONOR

OHANA superyacht

Motor Vessel MUSTANG SALLY

Power Yacht VALOR

Motor Yacht IONIAN PRINCESS

Superyacht SIROCCO

Motor Yacht TALISMAN MAITON

LOOKING BACK

Let’s look back at the seven luxury yacht charter vessels.  These boats helped propel Below Deck to the top of the cable TV ratings. For instance,

HONOR

First and foremost is HONOR.  The real name of this gorgeous Benetti yacht is CUOR DI LEONE.  This 164 foot superyacht build is Italian company, Benetti Yachts.  It has been seven years since the yacht appeared on Below Deck.  In December, 2013, the yacht was sold and her name changed to LUMIERE.  Many websites show the yacht as active in charter, however this is not correct.  In April , 2019, the yacht was once again sold.  Her name is now SOTAVENTO.  The current owner keeps the yacht for personal use only.  She is not for charter.

Point of Interest – When LUMIERE was sold, her owner replaced her with a larger Benetti yacht.  LUMIERE II  (ex-Mine Games) is 62 meters (203 feet) and is available for charter at a rate of €345,000 to €365,000/week

BELOW DECK YACHTS CONTINUED

OHANA

This 154 foot yacht builder is Admiral Marine Works, from 1998.  She was sold shortly after season 2 filming was completed in 2014.  Her new name is motor yacht RHINO.  Furthermore, the yacht is based in West Palm Beach.  She is offered for charter at a weekly rate of $140,000 to $150,000.

EROS

Trinity yacht MUSTANG SALLY was “cast” in the role of EROS for season three.   The 161ft yacht was sold in July, 2017.  Her name is now HUNTER,  and contrary to some company reports, she is no longer available for charter.

Point of Interest – You can uniquely own a piece of TV history.  MUSTANG SALLY is currently for sale. Asking price:  $12,900,000.

THE YACHTS CONTINUE

VALOR

The role of VALOR was played by motor yacht CHARADE. This yacht appeared in both seasons four and five.  The yacht was built in 1990 in Holland by Feadship.  The yacht owner changed her name in October, 2017.  Specifically, she is now named BG.  The yacht is based in Miami and charters primarily in the Bahamas.  Her weekly rate is $169,500.

Point of Interest – “BG” are the initials of the yacht’s owner, Bobby Genovese.  Genovese owns BG Signature, a collection of 12 luxury retreats in the United States, Canada, Europe, South America, and the Bahamas.  Genovese operates a second yacht for charter, a 78 foot Lazzara named, BG Jr.

IONIAN PRINCESS

This 151 foot yacht was selected to launch the premier season of Below Deck Mediterranean in 2016.  The episode was filmed in Greece.  In addition, the yacht has the same name and same owner since her launch in  2005.  The vessel is no longer based in Greece.  Now, she is based in Nassau and is available for Bahamas yacht charters.  The weekly rate is $160,000.

AND ANOTHER

SIROCCO

The second yacht to appear in Below Deck Mediterranean (season two) is the 154 foot SIROCCO. The yacht launched in 2006 and completely remodeled in 2013.  She is still an active charter yacht, and is based in the western Mediterranean.  The weekly charter rates starts at €180,000/wk.   Thus yacht is willing to accept charters in a broad area within the overall Mediterranean.  Charters may begin in any of these following destinations. For example,

Corsica

French Riviera

Monaco

Italy – North (mainland), Sardinia, Sicily, and South (mainland)

Provence Coast & Marseilles

FINALLY

TALISMAN MAITON

Last but not least, Talisman is the largest superyacht to appear to date on either Below Deck or Below Deck Mediterranean.  The yacht was built in Turkey by Proteksan Yachts.  She was launched in 2006, and refit in 2012.  The vessel is nearly 176 feet long (about 54 meters). Her home port is the South of France, and she remains an active charter yacht.  The weekly rate starts at €231,000

Point of Interest – This yacht is popular for special events such as a Monaco Grand Prix yacht charter.  Many yachts only allow 12 passengers onboard.  This yacht can have up to 60 guests onboard – as long as the yacht is at the dock and not in motion.

LOOKING FORWARD

Aerial photograph of sailboat PARSIFCAL III underway. She is sailing toward the left lower part of the photograph

Below Deck Sailing yacht, Parsifal III (“Par 3”)

The third version of Below Deck is now airing. Specifically, Below Deck – Sailing Yacht.  The new season premiered in February, 2020.  It is still too soon to tell if viewers will gravitate to a sailing yacht as the center of activity.  All past episodes of this series have taken place on motoryachts.

The yacht for this new spin-off is PARSIFAL III.  She is a 176 foot sailing yacht, and it should be noted that she is as large as the largest yacht ever on the show.  “Par III” is a Perini Navi Italian build.  The vessel’s launch date is 2005, with a refit in 2012.  There are 5 guest cabins for 10 passengers.  Charters are accepted in the western Mediterranean.  Her weekly rental rate ranges between €195,000 and €205,000.

Yacht Charter in Italy – Where Do We Go?

Posted on

THE SUPERYACHT EXPERIENCE™ IN ITALIA

There are 2 primary highlights of cruising the Italian Riviera. They are Portofino and The Cinque Terre.  Everyone knows Portofino.  Cinque Terre is well-deserving of praise, as well. Yacht charter Italy as a destination is popular.

WHERE DO WE GO?

Tour the five little towns.  Specifically, Riomaggiore, Manarola, and Corniglia. In addition, Vernazza, and Monterosso. Importantly, Cinque Terre means Five Lands. These narrow towns are linked by paths and old steps.  The stairs clamber up the Mediterranean marquis. This is among broom bushes. In addition, plants of butterbush, rare agaves flowers, and fragrant lemons exist.

ITINERARY FOR ITALIA

Here’s a sample itinerary. It includes two areas that clients specifically want to see.  They are Forte Dei Marmi and Florence.

Italian Riviera yacht charter itinerary

What awaits you?  Genuine warm hospitality.  As well as authentic regional cuisine awaits.  The prettiest, flower-filled stretch of the Italian coast.  It’s ‘Cinema Italiano.’  Especially lovely beautiful fishing villages. They resonate old world charm. Delectable Ligurian specialties are abundant.  For instance, pesto, tuna and anchovies.  These ignite your taste buds. It is a World Heritage site to the undeniably beautiful Portofino. The Italian Riviera is a coastline. It boasts a tantalizing selection of fish. This guarantees a foodie cruise in culinary heaven.

THE DAILY ROUTE

Photograph of Portofino, Italy from the marina. The water is turquoise, and there are boats in the marina. Yacht charter italy is popular here.

DAY 1   PORTOFINO TO CINQUE TERRE

This is on the Italian Riviera.  It is the little port town, Portofino. It is a genuine piece of earthly paradise. This peaceful haven is popular.  Specifically, with the international jet set. It offers breathtaking views over the Gulf of Genova. Numerous celebrities own luxurious estates here. What to do there? Walk over the summit past the Castello. Additionally, swim in the Captain’s Cove at the foot of high cliffs.  Enjoy the lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula. Shop in the lovely fashion boutiques.  Portofino has a lot to offer for everyone. Without a doubt, lunch or supper in the Splendido Hotel is a must.

Photograph of Cinque Terre, Italy. This is a must see on yacht charter Italy.

DAY 2   CINQUE TERRE – PORTOVENERE

Consider spending a few days exploring the Cinque Terre.  In specific, you find fantastic hilltop towns here. In addition, spectacularly good restaurants as well. Some of the villages provide a dramatic coast line.  It is breathtaking to see when approaching by yacht tender.  Others can only be accessed on land.  They are all absolutely stunning.

Yacht charter italy itinerary photograph of Forte Dei Marmi, Italy

DAY 3   FORTE DEI MARMI

Undoubtedly one of the must see destinations on the Italian Coast, Forte dei Marmi.  It is well known for its wide sandy beaches. Especially due to Alpi Apuane as backdrop.  It should be noted, it is considered the East Hampton of Italy.  The city delights with nice restaurants and beautiful beach areas.

Photograph of the Leaning Tower of Pisa

DAY 4   PISA

The Captain will organize your transfer to Pisa by private car from Livorno (Approximately 40 min). Once a maritime power to rival Genoa and Venice, Pisa now draws its fame from an architectural project gone terribly wrong. But the world-famous Leaning Tower is just one of many noteworthy sights in this compelling city.

The center of town is full of vibrant cafes and bars, balancing an enviable portfolio of well-maintained Romanesque buildings, Gothic churches and Renaissance piazzas with a lively street life dominated by locals rather than tourists.

Aerial photograph of Florence, Italy

DAY 5   FLORENCE

The Captain will organize your transfer from Livorno to Florence by car (Approximately 1.5 hours).

Surprisingly small as it is, this riverside city looms large on the world’s ‘must-sees’ list. A cradle of the Renaissance and home to famous art, Florence is magnetic, romantic and busy. Its urban fabric has hardly changed since the Renaissance. One reason, the narrow streets evoke a thousand tales.  Its food and wine are wonderful. The tag ‘Fiorentina’ is an international label of quality assurance.

Fashion designers parade on Via de’ Tornabuoni. Gucci was born here, as was Roberto Cavalli, who, like many a smart Florentine these days, hangs out in wine-rich hills around Florence. After a while in this absorbing city, you might want to do the same.

Photograph of Giglio Montecristo Italy

DAY 6   GIGLIO/MONTECRISTO

Compared to a pearl in a shell, the small Giglio isle lies cradled by warm blue seas. It is located specifically in the Southern corner of the Tuscan Archipelago. Just 50 km south of Elba, and 15 km from the mainland. Giglio has a mild climate and unspoiled nature. Uniquely crystal clear, emerald colored waters offer unforgettable sceneries all year round.

Photograph of Argentario Italy. The water is turquoise, and there are homes built above a solid rock foundation

DAY 7   ARGENTARIO

A thickly wooded, 23-square-mile promontory is linked to the mainland by three causeways.  L’Argentario has long been a vacation spot for wealthy Romans. Its main town is Porto Santo Stefano.  This is a uniquely flashy harbor for yachts.  Next, the colorful Porto Ercole.  Baroque painter, Caravaggio, died of malaria here in 1610. Finally, there’s also the lively fishing port of Orbetello nearby, with its blue-tinged lagoon.

Photograph of Elba, Italy

DAY 8   ELBA

Elba is a lovely island with a large choice of small ports and anchorages and an inland very much worth visiting.
Though best known for the famous prisoner who called it home for a short time, Napoleon Bonaparte.  Absolutely, the scenery with its spectacular mountains and numerous beaches draw visitors here each year.

The Superyacht Experience™ includes selecting locations for your itinerary that make you happy. In addition, bring peace and wellness into your life.  Subsequently creating amazing memories. This is all about YOU.  You deserve it!

Yachtsman Uses Medical Background To Help Hospital Workers

Posted on

ANCHORS AWEIGH

Avid yachtsman Gregory Kutsen is the owner of Mantus Marine.  His company manufactures and sells nautical items.  For instance, boat anchors, boat lights, SCUBA gear, and other products. Mantus Marine products are found on many luxury yacht charter vessels.

Kutsen’s goal is to make everyone’s boating experience more enjoyable and safer.

“We constantly look at new ways of solving existing problems.”                               Gregory Kutsen

GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND

Apparently, Kutsen’s company mission goes beyond the marine industry.  Greg Kutsen, nautical business owner, is also Dr. Greg Kutsen, MD.  Kutsen is an emergency room physician in Houston Texas.  There’s a critical shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) in his community.  As a result, Kutsen and Mantus Marine are shifting from building anchors.  Now, they convert snorkel masks into PPE medical devices to address the shortage!

Kutsen sees firsthand the importance of medical equipment to protect the hospital workers in Texas.

“I work as an ER Doctor so the shortage and the need for PPE was very clear (amid the COVID-19 pandemic).”

ADDRESSING A NEED

Mantus Marine has several innovative solutions to address the needs of health care professionals and hospitals.  They use 3D printers to convert snorkel masks into BiPAP ventilator masks. They also design and produce acrylic intubation shields.

Photo of a chinese man standing in a hospital corridor. He is looking at the camera. He is wearing blue scrubs. He is wearing a light blue snorkel mask that has been retrofitted as a mask and ventilator to use by first responders for the Coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic.

The masks and shields are donated to local emergency rooms and ICUs in the Houston area.

Simultaneously, the anchor manufacturer addresses the immediate shortages of PPE in health care systems. A recent media article states

“…(using their connections with) international supply chains…Mantus Marine purchased over 1.5 million surgical masks, 100,000 *KN95 masks, and 70,000 face shields to help supply hospitals across the state, including the Memorial Hermann and Methodist Hospital systems in Houston and regional hospitals and clinics in the Dallas area.”

N95 VS. KN95 Masks

Yes, you read it* correctly in the quote.  Masks donated were KN95 (not N95) masks.  KN95 masks are made in China and have a different fit than N95 masks, among a few other differences.  Both are authorized for use during the Covid-19 pandemic.  For more information about the differences in KN95 and N95, click here.

WE SALUTE OUR HEROES

Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters and her team are proud to acknowledge Dr. Gregory Kutsen and Mantus Marine.   These heroes solve problems and make a difference.  Both on sea and on land.  APPLAUSE AND GRATITUDE.
