WHERE SHOULD MY FAMILY GO THIS WINTER?

North American travelers looking for an ocean adventure closer to home might wish to consider a discounted Bahamas yacht charter this winter.

A YACHT CHARTER VACATION! WHAT A GREAT IDEA

Benetti Vision 145 yacht CHECKMATE announces a special offer for the remainder of the winter season in the Bahamas, cutting her weekly charter rate from $200,000 to $150,000.   The special rate equates to a 25% savings off the published rates!

We first introduced our readers to this yacht in November, 2013, when she began her inaugural winter charter season in the Bahamas .

The Italian-built superyacht boasts beautiful, quality construction. She has a contemporary chic interior design by Francois Surety. Yacht CHECKMATE  is the perfect vessel for a Nassau yacht charter.  She has an on-deck master suite with 180 degree panoramic views. In addition, she boasts zero speed stabilizers, VSAT internet access, and a spacious sun deck equipped with a day head.

ACCOMMODATONS

The five guest staterooms include a master cabin on the main deck. The master hosts a King bed, and ensuite baths featuring his and hers bathrooms.

#belowdeck are four spacious cabins with accommodations for 8 additional passengers.  In addition, two Pullman berths, suitable for small children exist onboard.

She is the 15th yacht built in the fabled shipyard’s Benetti Vision 145 series of semi-custom yachts.  This new yacht is poised to join the many Benetti yacht charter vessels currently in service. For instance, motor yacht SWAN  and James Bond yacht, DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER.

Lionfish Invasion Strategy – Eat ‘Em!

Posted on

UPDATE:  The ocean still needs help!  Serve up the lionfish!  Save the coral reefs!  Protect our native fish!

Lionfish photograph. The fish is swimming toward the left of the screen. The blurred background is coral rock on a bed of sand.

WHAT IS WITH THE LIONFISH INVASION?

THE LIONFISH

We see great menus on Caribbean yacht charter boats.  We are not sure this next recipe hits with yacht charter chefs, however.

Florida marine conservationists have a simple “recipe.”   They say, EAT the lionfish!

WHERE ARE LIONFISH  FOUND?

With few natural predators, Lionfish rapidly spread throughout the Caribbean and Atlantic.  They voraciously prey on many things. For instance, local fish, shrimp, and crab populations across the region and in Florida are targets.  Lionfish are a huge risk to the world-famous coral reefs of the south.

Bahamas yacht charter clients constantly see these venomous creatures.

REEF CONSERVATION HAS A SOLUTION

The Key Largo-based REEF conservation organization released “The Lionfish Cookbook.”  It is a  collection of 45 recipes to combat the red lionfish.

There are no government funds available to provide bounties or removal programs.  Conservationists hope to therefore create a commercial demand for the fish.

“It’s absolutely good eating — a delicacy. It’s delicately-flavored white meat, very buttery,” boasts Lad Akins.   In fact, he directs special projects for the Reef Environmental Education Foundation.  Akins authored the cookbook. He co-authored with professional chef, Tricia Ferguson.

HOW DID LIONFISH GET HERE?

Hurricane Andrew in 1992 – and as a result, an aquarium.   Researchers believe that Hurricane Andrew caused red Lionfish to invade Florida waters.  Specifically, an aquarium broke.  At least six lionfish spilled into Miami’s Biscayne Bay.  With no known predators, they freely breed and decimate sea creatures and corals.  It seems like such a small thing to happen.  It just goes to show you that 6 fish can destroy the ecology. Please be mindful of releasing exotic species.

The cookbook shares useful tips on collecting, handling, and preparing lionfish.  Furthermore, it provides expert background on its ecological impact.

HOW TO RENT A YACHT — AND EAT GOURMET MEALS

Miami Superyacht Charter Marina Rebrands

Posted on

Photograph of marina full of large yachts. There are tall buildings in the background. The sky is bright blue with puffy clouds.

ISLAND GARDENS MARINA NEWS

Miami’s premier superyacht marina, Island Gardens Deep Harbour, is under new management. The “upgrade” in management, in our opinion, is long overdue.

WHAT IS THE NEW NAME?

The new name for the Miami Superyacht Marina is Yacht Haven Grande Miami at Island Gardens.  The marina opened in 2016 and is the annual home of the SuperYacht Miami Show each February.

ABOUT IGY MARINAS

Island Global Yachting (also known as IGY Marinas) will operate the rebranded Miami marina.  This destination offers 50 superyacht berths – for yachts up to a maximum length of 550ft.  In-slip fueling is available. High-power electrical service is also available.

LOCATION OF SUPERYACHT MARINA

The marina is located on Watson Island.  The island is ideally located between Miami Beach to the east and downtown Miami to the westIndeed, the views of the Miami skyline are postcard-perfect.  The proximity to trendy area hotspots is unbeatable. This deep-water marina is always our first choice for our Miami yacht charter clients.  Nevertheless, the marina was less than ideal for the yacht crews as they awaited the arrival of our charter guests.  Specifically, the marina lacked a captain and crew lounge.  Furthermore, customs and immigration assistance was sketchy at best.

MARINA AMENITIES

IGY has resolved these issues.  There is now a crew lounge, as well as a conference room.  Additionally, concierge services are available including valet and laundry/dry cleaning.  On-site dining is also available.   In fact, the newly re-opened dock-side café, aptly named, “The Deck” is described by Forbes as “Miami’s Hottest New Restaurant.”

MARINA SERVICES

We’re excited to take advantage of the new services and amenities.  Apprehension gives way to anticipation, as we await the upcoming Superyacht Miami show (February 2021).  We are unsure as to whether the show will go on or be well-attended in 2021.  In specific, Covid, the pandemic, the Coronavirus changed the landscape of events.  What’s exciting about the show? As an example, in the past, we transported prospective clients to the show via yacht tenders.  The car parking lot was poorly maintained.  We found it simpler, cleaner, more in tune with the theme, AND more fun to arrive via boat.  Arrival by car is once again an option, with IGY concierge services in place.

SUPERYACHTS IN ATTENDANCE

Many of the Miami superyacht charter vessels we represent attend this yacht show.  In fact, February weather is ideal for our company President Jana Sheeder to shoot yacht inspection videos of our favorite superyachts [such as Benetti yacht 11.11 and Lurssen yacht Martha Ann.]

We’re excited to welcome IGY Marinas to Miami.  Moreover, we look forward to commencing more Miami superyacht charter vacations from this rebranded location.

New England Yacht Charter – What To Do

Posted on

SEPTEMBER ROCKS!

I like September. It is my birth month. College and pro football kick off (Go Miami Hurricanes!).  New episode of my favorite TV shows hit the airwaves. It’s also my favorite time to go boating.  Specifically, New England yacht charter vacations.

Late summer means slightly cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. In specific, at the beach, anchorages and marinas.

NEW ENGLAND

Nowhere is this more evident than New England (USA).  From Boston, to Martha’s Vineyard, to the Hamptons on Long Island, NY.  It is my favorite time to enjoy The Superyacht Experience™.

FAVORITE DESTINATIONS

Here’s a quick peek at two of my favorite late summer New England yacht charter destinations.  Specifically, Kennebunkport ME and Newport, RI.

[Click HERE to find a great New England Yacht Charter boat for a late summer escape!]

Kennebunkport, ME

Photograph of a marina in Kennebunkport, ME. There is 1 small boat anchored in the calm water. The water looks like glass. Perfect reflection. The marina is surrounded by cute little buildings. One has a big lobster painted on the side in red.

Why?  It has the best beaches in the state.  I am convinced God created the gorgeous rocky shoreline for one purpose.  In specific, for the express purpose of taking stunning photographs.

What To Do?  Anchor off Goose Rocks Beach.  Tender ashore. Walk the paved path along the cliffs of Marginal Way.

Where To Eat?  Onboard the yacht, of course!  Your chef prepares using some of the freshest seafood and late summer fruits available in New England.  If you like lobster, Maine is your Mecca.  Join the locals and indulge at the oh-so-casual Clam Shack (2 Western Ave). In addition, go to the Chowder House (79 Pier Road).

Where To Dock?  Try Chicks Marina on the Kennebunk River.  Expect top-notch service from the dockmaster to the dockhands.

Newport RI

Aerial photograph of the Newport Cliff Walk next to mansions on the coastline. The water laps at the cliffs on the left side of the photo.

Why?   Newport is the famous resort town for New England’s rich and famous.  Before The Hamptons, Newport was the summer escape. In specific, for the Vanderbilts, Rockefellers, and the captains of America’s industrial revolution.   The town has much to see.  For instance,  mansions, superyachts, and summertime music and art festivals.

What to do?  If you love yachts, visit the Newport Boat Show in September. Prefer shopping?  Check out the boutiques on Thames Street.  Take a tour at one of the famous mansions.  Stroll along the picturesque Cliff Walk.

Where To eat?  You can’t eat seafood every meal.  Okay.  Well, maybe you can.  Regardless, pleasant surprises await at the number of Mexican-themed restaurants. For example, Diego’s (Bowen’s Wharf) or Perro Salado.

Where To dock?  The premier facility in town is Bowen’s Wharf.  In addition, the renovated Newport Yachting Center.

In conclusion, New England is a great boating destination for any summer dates.  If you want to escape the heat and the crowds, this is it.  Plan your next yacht vacation in September in New England.  It is amazing!

New YIS App Enhances The Superyacht Experience®

Posted on

Photograph of the navigation station on superyacht, Solandge. The stations are uplit from the floor, and there is a large oval lighted area over the bridge

INFORMATION, PLEASE

A new digital superyacht technology tool for yacht owners and superyacht charter guests is available.  The portal provides real-time access to the yacht’s onboard information systems. Technophile guests can view the vessel’s specs, layout, and weather forecasts.  Surprisingly, they can even track their yacht charter itinerary.

YIS

The Yacht Information System (YIS) is an innovative digital tool. It is a YachtCloud design.  Onboard guests can access the portal via the yacht’s televisions via an IPTV channel.  Additionally, guests can access the portal via an app they download onto their smartphones or tablets.

THE WAY WE WERE

Until recently,  charterers would visit with the captain when they wanted information.  They would go to the command center of the yacht, the captain’s bridge.  Here, they would ask the captain questions.  For example, “What’s the final destination for today’s cruise?”  Or they might ask, “How long will it take us to get to the next port of call?”

With the YIS portal, clients can get instant answers – from anywhere onboard the yacht!

THINK OF IT AS A WINDOW

The technology customizes to meet the specific interests of the charter guests.  Superyachts are massive, and in addition, true wonders of technology.  The inner working of the crew, and the capabilities of the yacht, intrigue many charter guests.  In particular, clients often tell us they would love to visit the yacht’s engine room.  However, some guests feel they are, “in the way” of the engine room crew. They then and forego this visit.  With this app, guests can “observe”  the workings of the engine room from the comfort of their location. For instance, stateroom, the gym, the aft deck, or….

CLICK HERE for a demonstration of YIS.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE

YIS is one of six luxury technology products by YachtCloud.  The company began to innovate for the superyacht industry in 2014.  We are intrigued by their mission of “delivery” as it parallels our own commitment to creating a unique experience.  Our goal at 1-800 Yacht Charters is to, “Deliver The Superyacht Experience.™”  YachtCloud products are designed to, “Deliver a more immersive luxury experience.”

ADDITIONAL YC PRODUCTS

Other products offered by YachtCloud include OMNIYON.  This is a media control system for superyachts.  Specifically, it’s a user-friendly app that allows charter guests total control of all onboard audio/visual media.  It also serves as an interface for room devices, room controls, and yacht crew service call functions. As an illustration, this one app lets users browse their favorite movies in the yacht’s cinema catalog.  It also allows guests to adjust the yacht’s sky lounge to their ideal temperature.

GADGETS

Some people view technology as a way to sell gadgets.  We believe technology is the gateway for a sustainable yachting future.  Without a doubt, it’s also a fun way to enhance The Superyacht Experience®.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE

The term and the concept, The Superyacht Experience® is a creation of, and is trademarked by, 1-800 Yacht Charters. Our joy at bringing the industry this concept is overwhelming.  Legacy and Legitimacy.  Tis the season?  No, YIS the season!

Silence: A Noise Free Superyacht Experience?

Posted on

THE NEXT REVOLUTION

Our team is constantly looking for ways to improve The Superyacht Experience.™   Silent running yachts are a futuristic dream.  On some superyachts, we’ve added the latest Molton Brown and  Jo Malone personal care products to the staterooms and ensuite bathrooms.  Other yachts now have expanded, large swim platforms.  They have also converted the aft watertoy garages into contemporary “beach clubs”  with lounge and spa facilities.

WHAT IF…?

But what if the next revolution to the experience was more sensory in nature and less tactile?   Maybe the future will bring something that envelops the yacht with a calming, quiet sensation.

THE SUPERYACHT EXPERIENCE™

Maybe the future is already upon us…and the next revolution to The Superyacht Experience™  is the 262 foot hybrid yacht ARTEFACT.

Aerial photograph of a motoryacht underway. The yacht is heading from the upper left side of the screen to the lower right side of the photo. The waves are pushing out underneath the yacht as it goes through the water. The yacht is solid white with a light brown deck.

The brand new megayacht was built in Germany in a shipyard on Eider River in Rendsburg.  Nobiskrug yacht ARTEFACT has been deemed, “Our coolest project ever!”  by her designer, Gregory Marshall.

SHHHH…

So what makes this superyacht revolutionary?  The answer: SILENCE…

The yacht was built to operate in near-silent conditions.  She draws energy from 248 feet of solar panels on her sundeck.   A huge array of batteries store the solar-generated power. These batteries also allow her to operate for short periods without the need of combustion engines.

GOING GREEN

In addition to the overall sense of calm, onboard guests can feel good.  They know their yacht serves as an eco-friendly platform to a unique experience at sea.  First, running on hybrid power means less harmful emission into the atmosphere.  Second, silent running yacht, of course.  Third, Marshall designed the yacht with a variable-speed Azipod-propulsion and dynamic-positioning system.  This allows the yacht to hover near or over fragile reefs without the need to drop a damaging anchor into the water.

YET MORE GREEN TECHNOLOGY

One last nod to green-design technology.  Many of the yacht’s technical systems operate on recycled, filtered wastewater.

This new superyacht is one of the first to meet the stringent Tier III emissions regulations.  These are by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

One day soon, we hope all luxury yacht charter guests can add “noise-free” to the checklist of their own superyacht experience…

Small Details Can Make Or Break Your Yacht Charter

Posted on

THE MAGIC OF YACHT SHOWS

I love yacht shows, but probably for a different reason than most yacht charter brokers.  Sure, it’s a chance to see the newest yachts as they enter the market.  It is also a special opportunity to sample gourmet treats prepared by Michelin-star yacht chefs.  My associates refer to me as a wannabe gastronome.

For me, the real intrigue of attending a yacht show or yacht open house is the chance to watch our company President, Jana Sheeder, as she boards a yacht, inspects the vessel, and meets the crew.

Photograph of 4 people, smiling at the camera. They are standing in the main salon of a superyacht. The three people on the left of the photo are wearing black t-shirts and name badges on lanyards. The person on the right side of the photo is wearing a white blouse and gold name badge.

IN HER OWN WORDS

So what sets Jana apart from other charter brokers?  What is it that allows 1-800 Yacht Charters to innovate beyond the basic rental of yachts and to deliver what we call, The Superyacht Experience™ to our clients?

I’ll let Jana explain our point of difference.

“Attention to detail and focus on perfection are at the core of our business philosophy.  Aristotle is credited with the saying, ‘The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.’   We truly believe in the famous philosopher’s message.  It is easy to fall into the trap of analyzing a yacht’s onboard amenities.   Others see features, above benefits. Certainly, items like an ondeck hot tub, an outdoor cinema area, and Hamman spa draw your attention to a yacht, but it’s the small things, some tangible, some more of a feeling, that can make or break the onboard superyacht experience for a client.”

WHAT DOES SHE MEAN?

Here is an example of Jana’s point.   Recently aboard a yacht new to the market, 2016 Benetti motor yacht DREW.   During Yachts Miami Beach (February, 2017), at our city’s premier luxury yacht charter and sales show.  Other guests focused on the yacht’s layout and her unique design components. For instance, the covered seating area and hot tub, positioned on the forward Portuguese deck.  It is different, because it is not on the sundeck-  where most yachts locate their on deck Jacuzzi.  What was Jana looking at?  The soap and lotion dispensers in a cabin’s ensuite bath…

Photograph of a tray of bath products on a yacht. The products are all made by Molton Brown. The tray is beige, and the vanity is light colored marble.

“They provide Jo Malone soap and lotion to the guests,” Jana called out to me.  Later, she would explain the importance of providing quality skincare products to the charter guests.

“An article about the British Royal Wedding claimed Kate Middleton used Jo Malone Lime Basil & Mandarin to scent Westminster Abbey on her wedding day.  I researched the brand and was impressed by the unique, original scents.  It may seem strange to the casual observer, but the brand and quality of the soaps and lotions provided to the charter guests can be integral to the overall superyacht experience – especially for the female guests.  The fragrances provided by the yacht should be subtle, so as not to clash with any perfumes or colognes worn by the guests.  Additionally, the lotions need to have a nourishing texture since the charter guests are exposed to sun, salty water, and outside air much of the time during the cruise.”

As we moved from yacht to yacht, Jana would make notes and take photos of many items and features of the vessel, including the toiletry products displayed in the bathrooms.   She would make a star of approval on her list next to brands like Molton Brown, Byredo, and Aesop Resurrection Aromatique.

THE LITTLE THINGS

Here are other small and seemingly inconsequential items we critique during our yacht inspections.

First, floral arrangements.  Not so much the fact that flowers are displayed, but rather when they are displayed.  We always inquire from the crew if fresh flowers are put out on the morning of the last day of the charter.  This one simple act can have a positive impact on the charter guests, as they feel their last day on board is as fresh and inviting as their first day.

Second, bed sheets and thread count.  Affluent travelers appreciate an experience that mirrors their lifestyle.  The quality of linens, including bed sheets, towels in the ensuites, cloth napkins on the dinner table, etc. must reflect both the yacht’s upscale aesthetic and that of the charterer guests.

LASTLY

Third, personal hygiene.  Many of our charter clients enjoy lifestyles that includes the services of personal attendants. For instance, chefs, maids, butlers, and personal assistants.   These supernumeraries are well-dressed and well-groomed.  Their demeanor and appearance is a reflection of their employers.   When client are onboard, the yacht’s crew assumes some of these roles, especially in terms of waitstaff.  Jana will often discretely look at the fingernails of the deckhands and the stewardesses.  This is to see if their nails are neatly trimmed and manicured.  We also take note of the crew’s uniforms.  Are they new?  Clean?  Ironed and pressed?

Photograph of Jana Sheeder on the dock at a superyacht show. She is looking toward the left side of the photograph. There is a large white yacht behind her.

THE WHOLE VERSUS THE SUM

Many luxury yacht charter vessels have similar layouts and amenities.  Taking a holistic approach to small details has helped Jana and her team focus on continually striving for perfection.  Jana Sheeder realizes attention to details can mean the difference between a good vacation and a truly memorable superyacht experience.

Superyacht Builder Takeover of Perini Navi

Posted on

PERINI NAVI ON THE ROPES

Milano Finanza, Italy’s financial newspaper, reports yacht builder Perini Navi has filed for bankruptcy protection.

The move is hardly surprising, or unexpected.  The company has negative EBITDA of €25 million.  Debt between banks and suppliers is estimated at €55 million.

What is a bit of a surprise?  A buyout might be cultivated with rival local yard, Sanlorenzo.

ENTER SAN LORENZO

The newspaper states Sanlorenzo seeks a 70% controlling stake in Perini Navi.  To achieve this, the majority shareholder (the Tabacchi family) will dilute their ownership.  Their stake will drop from 74% to 30%

THE ARRANGEMENT

To begin with, a new company will be created.  After that, a cash infusion of €40 million will be needed.  Simultaneously,  Sanlorenzo will inject €30 million, and the Tabacchi family will put up €10 million.

NOT SO FAST

Perini Navi Chairman Edoardo Tabacchi is probably eager to close a deal.  However, there are many hurdles.

First, the Italian courts must formalize the bankruptcy. Second, the deal requires the consent of creditors.  Third, the deal could be challenged as a local monopoly.

Both yards are based in Viareggio.  Local union FIOM Tuscany is concerned about the plan.  In particular, the union questions the impact of such a monopoly within Viareggio.  They want a review of local concessions.

THE FUTURE:  SAIL VS POWER

It’s hard to challenge the success of Sanlorenzo.  In 2019, they went public with an IPO.  Year end reports were strong. New motor yacht sales up 39.3% compared to 2018.  EBITDA up 73.4% compared to fiscal 2018.

Even so, can Sanlorenzo succeed in the sailing yacht sector?  Consider Perini Navi is ranked #1 in the top 5 sailing superyacht builders.  Traditionally, in the superyacht market, 5 times as many motoryachts are built as compared to sailing yachts.

THE CHAIRMAN COMMENTS

Even so, Chairman Massimo Perotti remains positive:

“Sailing yachts are the sustainable future…the wind is completely clean and completely free.”

Perotti might be correct.  According to Boat International,

“(in 2019) We also recorded some welcome news for the sailing sector this year, with the numbers of 24-metre-plus sailing yachts ordered or under construction increasing by 15.7 per cent over last year. The number of projects – 59 – is still way down on the 10-year high of 95 in 2014, but any uptick in interest in sailing is welcome.”

HISTORY

Perini Navi defines private luxury yacht charter for sailors.  For instance, sail yacht SELENE, and sailing vessel PERSEUS 3, and BRAVO’s Below Deck’s sailboat, PARSIFAL III.  Of course, there is also the most famous sail yacht on the planet, the superyacht MALTESE FALCON.

Aerial photo of 3-masted sailboat, Maltese Falcon, underway. Center sail has a black flying falcon logo on it. Hull of yacht is dark against waves lapping at side of yacht. The statue of liberty and Ellis Island is in the backround

Hopefully, the name will live on…

SAIL OR POWER?  AND WHY!

Superyacht: So Where Do You Park it?

Posted on

Photograph of an elephant sitting in mud

Where does an elephant sit? #joke

JOKE

There’s an old joke that goes something like this:  “Where does a 200-ton elephant sit?
The answer of course is, “Anywhere he wants!

THE SIZE OF A SUPERYACHT

Unlike the mighty elephant, superyachts aren’t as lucky.  Their massive size is certainly impressive, but when it comes to sufficient space to dock, there just aren’t enough marinas with enough room to berth the world’s largest yachts.  Owners onboard large luxury yacht charter vessels often are forced to anchor at sea and use tenders to come and go ashore.

BERTH FOR SALE

Thus the news of a megayacht berth for sale along the French Riviera is certain to draw the attention of yachtsman tired of the ordeal of tendering ashore.

A rare 50-meter berth has just been listed for long-term lease in Cap d’Ail. Cap d’Ail is perfectly positioned on the Cote d’Azur and serves as a gateway to Monte Carlo, just a short drive or cruise from Nice, France, and northern Italy.

Aerial photograph of a marina in Monaco. Shows multiple motoryachts on extended slips.

Cap d’Ail Marina in Monaco

DOCKAGE DETAILS

With large yacht berths rapidly becoming a rare find, this slip will surely sell quickly. The berth measures 50 x 10 meters and comes with fenders (is there anything worse than a scratched paint job on a fancy yacht?).   The berth’s lease expires December 31, 2027.

HOW MUCH IS A YACHT SLIP?

The asking price of berth number 6 is € 4,500,000.

Sounds like a steal!
