Money from different countries
Reuters is following a downgrade in credit ratings of nine euro zone countries. They report the euro as likely to post further losses in the coming week. It dropped on Friday the 13th to its lowest against the U.S. dollar in nearly 17 months.
With euro sliding, value prices on Caribbean yacht charter vacations will flourish, says Jana Sheeder, President of SailAway Yacht Charters and 1-800 Yacht Charters.
“Many of the yachts we represent for mega yacht charters are owned by European investors. They set their rates in Euros. It is a currency that is being battered by the downgraded credit ratings of euro zone countries like France, Spain, and Italy,” says Sheeder.
American travelers look to secure rental vacations on European-owned superyachts. They see their US dollar stretch further than in the past two charter seasons.
“US-based travelers were on the short end of the stick for quite some time,” says Sheeder. “As their dollars strengthen, they can upgrade to larger yachts without paying more money. The foreign currency pendulum is definitely swinging in their direction.”
The inventory of luxury vessels for hire is growing. Couple this with low demand due to the global recession. These changes put pressure on charter rates. Charterers rejoice. “The shrinking euro plus excess inventory and low demand is creating tremendous value for United States residents looking to charter in the Caribbean this winter and even in the Mediterranean this summer,” explains Sheeder.
High Power III
The 70-meter motor yacht HIGH POWER III (ex-NUMPTIA), for example, recently announced a euro rate reduction, combined with extra free charter days for the remainder of the Caribbean season.
Sheeder and her advisors believe the tumble is not over.
“The breakdown in talks between Greece and its creditor banks means Greece is on the verge of collapse. This could continue the downtrend in the euro,” states Sheeder.
Some currency strategists see the euro possibly hitting $1.25 by the end of next week, with a target of between $1.21-$1.22. The euro plunged to a low of $1.26240, its weakest level since late August 2010, on the EBS trading platform. On Friday the 13th, it last traded at $1.26830, down 1.1 percent on the day. The euro, down slightly on the week, posted its third straight weekly loss, based on EBS data.
“On the bright side,” says Sheeder, the tumbling euro will provide a significant incentive for Americans to book European-owned yachts at a deeply-discounted price for many months to come.”

Property Industry Foundation charity sailing event
Here’s a quick shout-out. this is directed to our bareboat and mega yacht charter comrades Down Under.
A very successful event this year. More than $80,000 for homeless children. This was done by the members of the Royal Brighton Yacht Club. It was the second annual Property Industry Foundation Charity Sailing Challenge.
Thirty-five yachts both participated. They are from the private sector and the charter industry. The boats set out on the bay in Melbourne to participate in the event. It brings together businesses from the real estate and construction industries.
Funds raised from the March 30 event always have a specific use. For instance, they are hiring a youth worker for Open Family Australia this year. It is a homeless children’s advocacy group based in Wyndham.

Beyonce and Jay Z
While this mommy and daddy are well-known for enjoying numerous week-long mega yacht charter vacations at sea, a simple day excursion on the water was a great introduction for their infant daughter to the yachting lifestyle.
Beyonce, husband Jay-Z, and three month-old daughter Blue Ivy Carter spent the Easter holidays in one of the family’s favorite vacation enclaves – the island of St Barts.
The local paparazzi captured the parents boarding a small day charter vessel, with Blue Ivy in her mother’s arms, as they prepared to spend a lazy afternoon on the water.
Locals on St Barts are used to seeing the media power couple once or twice a year, their chartered superyacht docked along the quay. For the short Easter weekend, the family elected to stay in shoreside accommodations. But the yachting “itch” is powerful, and the couple took a perfect-weather day as an opportunity to go boating in the afternoon – and to take along their daughter for her first boat ride.
Perhaps we’ll see the family back in St Barts at year-end, enjoying another New Year’s Eve yachting vacation.

A Creston wireless audio/visual system and the computerized Kaleidescape music and movie servers are accessible through DVD players in all cabins and salons. Satellite TV and iPOD docking stations are located throughout this superyacht, with surround sound and Blu-Ray disc players in the salons and Owner’s suite. For children of all ages, a Karaoke and Sony Playstation 3 game console can be enjoyed in the Twin stateroom.
The numerous televisions onboard include: Main salon: 71” TV & 7.1 surround sound, Skylounge: 60” TV & 7.1 surround sound, Sundeck: 32” TV, Aft Skylounge Deck: 42” TV, Aft Main deck: 42” TV in motorized drop down ceiling enclosure, Owners Stateroom: 42” TV & 7.1 Surround Sound & 32” TV in Lounge, Owners Baths: 20” TV each, Owners Office: 20” TV/ computer monitor, Guest staterooms (4) total: 32” TV in each.
Staying in touch with the home office is often important for corporate charter guests. Onboard communication systems include: VSAT for broadband internet and VOIP (Seatel 4006); BGAN F55 for broadband internet and Satellite telephone and fax; wired and wireless networks throughout; cellular telephone (GSM networks); VHF radios with DSC; MF/HF radio with DSC; and Sat-C mobile earth station.

Vava II and Britain’s Richest Woman
Presenting the largest private luxury yacht built in Britain. The yacht is delivered to the UK’s wealthiest woman, Kirsty Bertarelli. The yacht’s maiden voyage to the Caribbean began.
On Friday, March 2, the 90 meter motor yacht VAVA II left. It went from the Devonport shipyard in Plymouth. The 314 foot superyacht (priced at £100 million) commissioned for former Miss UK. Gift recipient is 40 year old Kirsty Bertarelli. Gift giver is her billionaire husband, Ernesto Bertarelli, 46.
What does Bertarelli do? He is a Swiss pharmaceutical tycoon. The man is reputedly worth £6.8 billion. This wealth makes him the 81st richest man in the world. He is the fifth richest man in the UK. He had megayacht VAVA II built by Plymouth-based Pendennis Plus (formerly Devonport Yachts).
Superyacht VAVA II
The “big white boat” has many features. For instance, a fold-down beach club, and a pool. The pool can can be varied in depth to cater for guest preferences.
Superyacht VAVA II was designed by Redman Whitely Dixon, with interior styling by Remi Tessier. The yacht is built to SOLAS-36 passenger ship standards and will set a new standard in the charter market for 2012 and beyond.
Kirsty Bertarelli (formerly Kirsty Roper) won Miss UK in 1988 when she was 17. She now lives in Switzerland.
