Builder of Catamarans Undeterred by Shipyard Fire

FIRE AT YACHT SHIPYARD

At any rate, fire halted production. This happened at the shipyard of a builder of luxury catamarans.  The company President says it’s business as usual just 5 days later.

PRODUCTION STARTS AGAIN

The fire on January 19 did not stop production for long.  The catamaran manufacturer started rebuilding lost units within 5 short days. Some yachts under construction were destroyed.  Key molds were saved, however, and the shipyard adapted another production hall right away.  Above all, the molds moved to the new site, and business resumed.

Production was recommenced on January 23rd, and Francis Lapp, President of Sunreef Yachts, is,

“…confident any delays in delivery due to the fire will not exceed 3 months.”

Sunreef Yachts is a leading designer and builder of luxury sailing and power catamarans in the 60 to 80 foot range. The company is known for its commitment to building yachts with luxurious accommodations, expansive living spaces, and  innovative designs.

Calliope from Mythology Meets Modern Beauty

Posted on

GREEK MYTHOLOGY

In ancient Greek mythology, Calliope (k-l-p) was the beautiful Muse of epic poetry.  Fast forward two-thousand years, where that classic beauty and spirit can be enjoyed onboard motor yacht CALLIOPE.

Profile photograph of a yacht underway. It is headed toward the right side of the photo. The yacht has a dark blue hull and white superstructure. The logo, 1800yachtcharters, is in white and it located in the top left corner of the photo. The water is the same color as the body of the yacht

ABOUT YACHT CALLIOPE

Launched in 2010 by fabled Dutch builders Holland Jachtbouw, the 42.28m (138ft 8in) yacht has left the confines of the Mediterranean yacht charter fleet for new adventures in the Pacific Ocean, where she will be based this winter in the yachting capital of Auckland, New Zealand.
Currently, motor yacht CALLIOPE is available for a year-end yachting holiday at the attractive rate of  $160,000 per week plus running costs, for up to ten guests in five staterooms!
Multi-repeat charterers scramble to find new destinations for their winter vacations.  New Zealand is the hot spot for 2013.  It has easy international flight access.  Auckland is the perfect embarkation port.  Furthermore, it is a short cruise from the stunning nearby Hauraki Gulf islands.  For instance, Rangitoto, home to the largest volcano in the region.

Yacht Charter review by email

YACHT CHARTER REVIEW

“Dear SailAway,

I just wanted to write and let you know what a fabulous time we had on the (sailing catamaran) Secret Oasis!!!

Profile photograph of sailing catamaran, Secret Oasis. The name is on the side of the boat in blue cursive font. The yacht is at anchor. Her sails are down. There is a light blue sail cover over the sail that goes horizontally across the boat.

Secret Oasis yacht charter catamaran

It was everything we had hoped and more. Richard and Adele who were the crew were topnotch. – two of the nicest people any of us had ever met. Their respect for us and the boat was superior. They went out of their way to show us the best of the BVI…beaches, snorkeling, sailing, caving, beach bars..it was all great.

THE REVIEW CONTINUES

The meals were 5-star, accommodations were wonderful, and of course, sailing and traveling from island to island and enjoying the beautiful BVI.

Maybe you can pass this on to the manager or owner of the Secret Oasis: I think they should be aware of the care and respect shown to both the boat and to us.

I cannot imagine two better people to represent the Oasis..We will be back!!

Thanks for your help, SailAway

Diane M”

THANK YOU FOR THE REVIEW

Thank you to Diane…   We guess the “Secret” is out of the bag, Diane! Thank you for your kind comments about this season’s stars of the crewed catamaran charters market – sail yacht SECRET OASIS, and her crew.

SECRET OASIS CATAMARAN

Many people have spent time aboard sail catamaran SECRET OASIS.  Captain Richard Smit and Hostess Adele are amazing. Adele is a cheerful South African First Mate with the same, catchy name as the singer, Adele

ENERGIZER BUNNY

Boundless energy and enthusiasm, they make the Energizer Bunny  look like a slow moving hare on Rohypnol.

WATERTOYS

Richard and Adele operate the 56 foot Voyage catamaran. She is a boat packed with watertoys.  The yacht features a perfect 5-cabin layout for 10 passengers.  Each of the staterooms features a 17-inch TV with built-in DVD and CD player. The rooms also have other things. For instance, vanity and a private bathroom ensuite.

CREWED CARIBBEAN CATAMARANS FOR CHARTER

Catamaran sail yacht SECRET OASIS is one of over one dozen crewed catamarans.  SailAway Yacht Charters also represents 31 meter sail yacht IPHARRA, 23 meter sail catamaran KING’S RANSOM, and the 19 meter catamaran, IN THE WIND.

Caribbean Yacht Charter – Go Green to Save the Blue

Posted on

ECO-FRIENDLY PRACTICES

An association of charter brokers has announced an award to recognize luxury sailing charter vessels who adopt eco-friendly practices.

SAVE THE BLUE

The  Charter Yacht Brokers Association International (CYBA) has launched the 2012 “Save the Blue” awards, as a continuation of the organization’s green initiative to reduce plastic water bottle waste by encouraging yachts to produce their own onboard purified drinking water.
Logo for Going Green To Save the Blue CYBA yacht charter association

YACHTS GO GREEN

Vessels available for charter can qualify for the award by meeting at least seven of the thirty criteria that CYBA has listed in an online survey.  Many of the criteria are simple to implement and include green practices such as using biodegradable cleaners, buying sustainable seafood, and using recyclable shopping bags.

COMPANY PRESIDENT COMMENTS

“By undertaking a few simple eco-friendly practices, the fleet of yachts for hire in the Caribbean can make a dramatic impact on the island environment.  Our Team commends CYBA’s efforts.”
CYBA is hopeful these awards inspire others. For instance, captains, crews and owners. The association wants them to take more steps. In specific, to go green.  Qualifying vessels are recognized at the upcoming charter industry winter shows in St. Thomas, Tortola, and Antigua.
Special mention will be given.  Specifically, to the “Most Eco-friendly Sailing Yacht”

Caribbean Yacht Charters | SailAway’s Top Three Secret Caribbean Beaches

Posted on

Photograph of white sand beach with waves lapping up on the sand. Turquoise water with a green tree-laden island in the background

The SailAway Yacht Charter Group’s Picks for
Best Secret Beaches in the Caribbean

* Lameshur Bay Beach, St. John
* Happy Bay, St. Martin
* Palm Beach, Barbuda

THE STORY

For years,  travel agents and yacht charter brokers have promoted the British Virgin Islands as “Nature’s Little Secret.”  Unfortunately for luxury sailing charter travelers seeking solace and quiet anchorages, the secret is out.  While the BVI and most of the Caribbean remains a fantastic sailing destination, there’s no denying it – it is getting harder and harder to anchor off the shore of a quiet beach.
The good news is that there are still undiscovered beaches in the Caribbean — blissful hideaways where tourism hasn’t yet eclipsed the local culture.

THE STORY CONTINUES

The most experienced Caribbean yacht charter skippers know these secret beaches but are reluctant to disclose their locations.  Fortunately, our loyalties are to our charter clients – and we are more than willing to share these hidden gems with our readers!

TOP 3 SECRET BEACHES

First, Lameshur Bay Beach, St. John, USVI
While the bareboat yacht charter crowd is anchored off the Baths in Virgin Gorda, BVI, we like slide across Drake Channel to the US side of the Virgin Islands and go ashore on the secluded southeast coast of St. John, at Lameshur Bay beach.  At the end of the cobblestone beach at Lameshur is a more isolated, sandier strip known as Donkey Bight. Snorkelers love this beach, as it leads to Beehive Cove, a warren of caves and tunnels filled with coral and sea sponges and teaming with fish.
Physical fitness buffs can also enjoy a 1.2 mile hike up a trail to the 1,000-foot peak of Bordeaux Mountain, which overlooks the bay below.  Photograph of a beige sand beach, seagrape leaves in the left hand and front of the photo, and island at the back right side of the photo. Turquoise water that blends to dark blue as it gets further away.

SECOND TOP SECRET BEACH

Happy Bay, St. Martin
Located on the French side of St. Martin, Happy Bay is an underpopulated stretch of crème-colored sand. Thick underbrush surrounds the beach and serves as a challenging barrier to most shore-based tourists. The privacy of this beach has made it a popular spot for clothing optional tourists.  Snorkelers marvel at the vast numbers of tropical fish in the crystal waters.

THIRD SECRET BEACH

Palm Beach, Barbuda
While nearby Antigua flaunts bustling beachside hotels, Barbuda offers quiet beaches with pink sands, the Frigate Bird Sanctuary, and only a handful of resorts.  Antigua is a great place to begin a superyacht charter (international airport, and excellent megayacht marinas) but do yourself a favor after your board.  Cruise over to Barbuda and enjoy the solitude.
