Every spring, the charter industry yacht owners gear up for the Mediterranean yacht charter summer season. They have their crews spruce up the yachts in multiple ways. For instance, fresh paint, new linens and fabrics, and most importantly: new watertoys.
TOY COMPETITION
The competition between watertoy manufacturers is stiff. All battle to come up with the newest unique aquatoy.
RECENT TOYS
Last year, the must have toy was the Water Slide. More than 100 megayachts commissioning the toy in just one season.
THIS YEAR’S TOY
Summer is just around the corner. Industry insiders think the next “must-have” watertoy just might be an inflatable “Climbing Wall.”
CLIMBING WALL DETAILS
James Econs from Eco Yacht Toys says,
“The Climbing Wall really could be the client request for 2013/14 and the interest in it, even in these last ten days, has blown us away. We hope to have a few climbing walls on yachts before summer really kicks in – and they’ll all be the talking point of the bay.”
“In our superyacht industry, the more high-tech gadgets and premium toys you have onboard, the greater your odds are to secure charters from repeat clients,” explains Sheeder. “Many clients will return each season to the comfortable surroundings of the same destination, but they will expect the yacht they choose to provide fresh entertainment options with each new charter.”
GREEN YACHTS
The climbing wall is the world’s first inflatable exercise wall. It is designed by professional rock climbers, and built by Green Yachts. It has three different routes. These have three different color schemes. Each represents a different level of difficulty. First, green for novice climbers. Second, yellow for intermediate climbers. Third, red for advanced climbers seeking a challenging and tricky ascent.
BEST FEATURE
The best feature of this new toy? A tough and hot ascent? Simply plunge into the sea below for a refreshing break!
PRICE OF WATERTOY
Introductory prices for the inflatable climbing wall start at 14,495 Euros.
I WANT TO CHARTER A YACHT
Skip the crowds in France and Italy, and consider a Croatia yacht charter this summer.
There’s no escaping them, drones are everywhere. From sporting events, to backyard parties, and even battlefields, UAV’s are here to stay.
What does UAV stand for?
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
THE FUTURE OF UAV’s
These UAV’s evolve quickly. They may deliver groceries to my front door someday soon, so let’s hope they develop rapidly. #UAV inventors are amazing.
LUXURY YACHT CHARTER
Of course, it doesn’t take long for the latest technology and toys to find their way into the world of #luxury yacht charter. It only makes sense.
As yacht charter brokers, we constantly tout the advantages of private yacht charter vacations. The benefit is that they go where others cannot.
The reality is this. There are places that even a yacht (or the yacht’s tender) can’t take you. For example, exploring deep in hidden caves along the Amalfi Coast, or uncovering new coves to drop the anchor before nightfall rolls in.
There’s also the simple, fun aspect of small UAV’s. For instance, flying them from the sundeck and filming your kids as they frolic in the ocean alongside your yacht.
Our charter department sat down this week, and after consulting with several superyacht captains, came up with our 3 favorite drones to use and enjoy on a luxury yacht charter vacation. So before you turn in your guest preference sheets to your charter broker, make sure to jot down your request for one of these UAV’s to be added to the yacht’s inventory of guest toys!
In no particular order:
OUR TOP THREE UAV’s
1. GoPro Karma – Many drones are bulky, but the Karma drone has foldable arms and a long flat body that can tuck in tightly inside a tote bag or backpack. This makes it easy to take on the tender to the beach, or fly from the yacht’s sundeck. Works with the GoPro Hero 4 or Hero 5 cameras. The video game-style controller makes this model a breeze to use by first timers.
2. OpenROV Trident – Thought all drones are for “flying?” Guess again. Ok…technically this is not a UAV, but it does “fly” along – under the waves. The Trident by OpenROV is an underwater drone that can cruise at 4 knots and dive as deep as 100 meters. It comes with a built-in high def (1080 pixel) camera configured for low-light environments. Considering how much time you spend in the water during a yacht charter vacation, this is a great toy to use to capture sea life and have fun while the gang is swimming and snorkeling.
3. Airdog – Just the name alone tells you this a cool, must-have toy. Forget the controller – the Airdog flies itself, completely unaided from takeoff to landing. The aim of this UAV is to film you while you are moving (e.g. paddling along on a SUP, bouncing along on a towable toy pulled behind the yacht’s tender, or zipping by the yacht’s beach club deck on a waverunner). The drone films your every move, by tracking a small, waterproof device called the AirLeash, attached to your wrist. The manufacturer calls it, “the only drone built for action sports.”
So there you have it – from high above, to deep below, and as fast as you want to go – there’s a perfect UAV drone for your next superyacht experience.
But what about gadgets that simply didn’t cut the mustard in 2011?
In a year when technology heralded the magic of the Cloud and 4G phones were popping up everywhere, the year also bore witness to some failures of epic proportion. Here are our picks for the three biggest technology meltdowns of 2011:
3-D Technology
We’ve said it many times – the tech toys and gadgets found on mega yacht charter vessels are a good barometer as to what is hot and what is not. Take for example, 3-D technology. The future might be now, but you’d hardly know it by taking a peek in the average yacht’s salon. A quick look at some of the newest yachts like the 61 meter Benetti yacht LYANAand the 56 meter Perini Navi sail yacht FIDELIS shows 3-D technology has not been embraced by the yachting community.
You just don’t see any 3-D television sets on the yachts, or in many homes. Blame high prices or headaches from wearing silly-colored glasses, but at the end of 2011, interest in 3-D TV is the same as it was at the beginning of 2011, and sales are flat.
iPhone 4S
While sales are anything but flat for the iPhone 4s, Apples newest handset is still a major consumer letdown. Yes, it’s one of the fastest, best-looking smartphones on the block — but it’s no iPhone 5. Apple aficionados spent the better part of the year waiting for a reincarnated iPhone with a larger screen, and thinner profile. In the end, they were presented with the iPhone 4S — a nominal upgrade at best over the previous model.
Android Tablets
While the iPhone 4s may have been a letdown, Apple’s iPad tablet juggernaut seems unstoppable, leading us to declare Android tablets as the biggest gadget failure of 2011. A year after the release of the first iPad, not a single technology company has made a dent in Apple’s tablet market. Sales of devices like the Motorola Xoom featuring the Android tablet operating system pale in comparison to the sales of the mighty iPad. Will the new iPad 2 be the final nail in the coffin of Android tablets in the marketplace?
The time has come. You are almost packed for your Croatia yacht charter vacation. You take one last look at the packing checklist your charter broker gave you: Toothbrush? Got it. Lip balm? Check. Passports? Yep!
Sounds like you’ve got the “necessities” all in order. Now, it’s time to pack the cool stuff…the fun stuff…
It’s time to pack…the gadgets!!!
Whether you are traveling with the family by car to Disneyland, or hopping on a plane for a Benetti yacht charter along the Italian coast, a trendy, new electronic gadget is always fun to bring along.
Our intrepid charter department staff has come up with a list of their top four new electronic travel gadgets for 2011. Take a look and see if there’s any room in your luggage for one of these nifty toys:
PELICAN i1015 Smartphone Case – while not designed for swimming, this clear case protects your iPhone, iTouch or iPod from salt water spray, sand, and the like. Great for the beach or the trail. Kodak’s new vid cam can go practically anywhere you go. It’s waterproof up to 10 feet and can be dropped up to 4 feet, and features a full 1080p HD video.

When it comes to innovation and design, the Italians constantly turn the yachting industry on its head.
UFO SIGHTING
The latest creation looks more like a UFO than a boat. Italian design studio Lazzarini launched its first “mini yacht” during the 2013 Monaco yacht charter show.
PRESENTING THE LAZZARINI JET CAPSULE
The Lazzarini Jet Capsule is a compact water craft. It measures just 7.5 meters (24.6 feet) in length and 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) wide. It is approximately the same dimensions of a megayacht tender.
Lazzarini Jet Capsule
CAPSULE WITH MULTIPLE USES
The company feels the customizable futuristic looking vessel suits multiple uses. Firstly, it is a water taxi, Secondly, it is a scuba diving vessel. Thirdly, it is an elite yacht tender. The Lazzarini Jet Capsule is made with a fiberglass hull. A hydro-jet system powers the vessel. The capsule offers from 315 to 740 hp. It also offers a deck protected from the elements. This Italian masterpiece seats eight passengers.
JET CAPSULE AMENITIES
The vessel has many amenities. For example, automatic closing doors, a rooftop sunbed, rear diving platform, and a convertible bedroom with head. Interior customizations include a kitchen.
Jet capsule with night lighting
The Sardinia yacht charter crowd is not only in for an out-of-this-world surprise at anchor at night, but next to this vessel, they are impressed. The Jet Capsule’s interior and exterior lights are designed to give the impression that the vessel is a UFO spacecraft, as it appears to hover over the water!
Prices for the Lazzarini Design Jet Capsule are yet to be released…
ITALY YACHT CHARTER SEASON
The Italian yacht charter season runs each summer from early June through September. In addition, popular ports of call include Positano,Rome, and the island of Sardinia.
The superyacht rental market is highly competitive. Owners look for new aquasport toys to add to their onboard inventory daily. One of our readers contacted us after a boat show. He saw a unique toy there that he knew we would like. We think it catches the attention of the charter industry.
THE FOILJET MR1
The Foiljet MR1 is a new personal watercraft. It combines the features of a motocross bike and a jetski. The bike is built on a two hydrofoil platform. It features a silent, energy efficient electric motor. his wacky new toy looks to be a surefire recipe for outrageous fun.
Foiljet MR1 Hydrofoil Motocross Waterbike Yacht Charter Toy
The design looks like a motocross bike. Instead of motorcycle wheels, there are thin beams with hydrofoil wings. These are mounted at the ends of the wings, and they can be raised or lowered. The Foiljet employs a 15 kW (20 hp) electric motor. It is housed at the end of the rear beam. The motor delivers the electric torque that lifts the craft out of the water.
Since most charter clients prefer the relative safety of playing in shallow water, the Foiljet beams can be raised at the flick of a switch, allowing the rider to stay closer to the water’s surface.
The electric motor runs off a 48V battery that delivers about three hours of full load running. After that, it’s back to the mothership for lunch and cocktails while the Foiljet battery recharges for another run!
Still in the prototype stage, the designers are hopeful the toy will catch on – especially with eco-friendly yacht owners. Hydrofoils produce relatively no wake and the electric propulsion system is nearly silent.
While many bays and harbors visited during Mediterranean yacht charter holidays restrict the use of noisy personal watercraft such as waverunners, the developers of the Foiljet MR1 are confident there silent, eco-friendly new toys will be permitted in most waterways. Are you a superyachting eco-hero? Isn’t it time you pampered yourself and chartered a yacht that is also good to the planet?
It’s amazing how many cellphones meet their demise during yachting holidays. Hardly a week goes by that a charter client doesn’t report someone in their travel party dropped their phone in the water during their time at sea.
The cellphone industry reports more phones are irreparably damaged by exposure to water and moisture than from any other cause.
Thus, all of us who spend time on boats have a vested interest in waterproof phones.
Waterproof your phone before yacht charter
In the past, the only way to protect your phone during a luxury yacht charter vacation was to buy a bulky, clunky watertight case – which just about doubled the size of any hand-held device.
Fortunately two companies,HzOin Utah and Liquipel in California, have developed invisible coatings that can make your phone resistant to spills and dunks.
Both companies use similar application processes to bond water-repelling nano-polymers to phones. They place the phones inside a sealed chamber, suck the air out, and inject a gas. The gas vapor includes a protective coating that settles on the phone and forms an invisible water barrier so thin it is just one thousandth the thickness of a human hair.
HzO claims their coating will protect a phone from being underwater for more than four hours…
Both companies offer coating protection for under $70. This is a reasonable investment to consider before your next crewed catamaran yacht charter vacation!
The other day, our charter department was updating the list of online watertoys for newly launched Mediterranean yacht charter vessel QUARANTA. The list of aquatoys sent to us by the yacht’s manager detailed all of the usual toys – tender, snorkel gear, wakeboard, etc. One item, however, caught my attention: SUP.
I fired off a text message to the manager that read, “David, whatz SUP?”
A few moments later, I received his reply, “Not much…whatz up wit u??”
Once I composed myself and stopped laughing, I sent him another text reading, “No seriously, what does SUP mean?”
David replied, “Stand Up Paddleboard.”
It seems stand up paddleboards, or SUP’s are popping up on mega yacht charter vessels everywhere, and just might be the “In” watertoy for 2013.
Stand up paddle boarding is an emerging global sport with a Hawaiian heritage. Designed as a way for surfers to paddle longer distances, supporters cite the ease of learning how to use a SUP as a key to its popularity.
“Unlike kiteboarding or windsurfing, novices can learn to use a SUP in as little as an hour of training,” states Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters. “They are affordable toys that can easily be integrated into both sail boat charters and motor yacht charters.”
Expect to see more and more charter vessels adding SUP’s to their onboard watertoy inventories…and next time that you hear the phrase, “whatz SUP,” you’ll know!
