Food For Naut: Caterer Finds Niche In Caribbean Yacht Charter Market

Posted on

WHERE DO YACHT CHEFS FIND INGREDIENTS?

You are the chef onboard a St. Barts yacht charter vessel, and your guests have asked you to create a lavish meal at sea with hard-to-find ingredients.  Where do you turn?

The answer is a specialty food supplier such as The Grateful Palate.

SOUTH FLORIDA CATERER

Since 2009, the South Florida-based caterer has offered provisions to discerning customers in the nautical industry.  From their 10,000 square foot distribution center in the Fort Lauderdale area, the provisioning company has always sourced and shipped food items, toiletries, and other premium goods to chefs and crew on mostly Caribbean and Bahamas yacht charter vessels.  They have also serviced private yachts as well.

Photograph of a beautiful entree on a plate, served in front of a water glass and wine glasses. An elegant dining table. Wine and water glasses are blurred in background of photo that is a yellow hueCUSTOM ORDERS ARE IMPORTANT

The company has always specialized in working with clients seeking custom orders of the highest-quality products.  Expectations have always been high, as charter chefs need items delivered fresh and on time to specific destinations.

CATERER IS NO MORE

But, sadly, The Grateful Palate is no more…..until the Fall of 2014, when they reopen in a larger facility so that they can continue servicing their discriminating clientele!
According to owner Meghan Leckey, being able to meet customers’ demands and deliver the goods resulted in a strong repeat clientele and the company’s continued growth. She said, that it was “…a growing business that [has] picked up substantially over the years.”

PASSOVER CELEBRATION

For Passover this year, Leckey’s company supplied a 200-foot Virgin Islands yacht charter vessel in St. Thomas with kosher meats, sodas, dry goods, and ceremonial supplies for the religious holiday. It also sent specialty kosher caviar flown in from Paris.
Leckey feels she understands the needs of the owners and crews of the world’s largest yachts
“The secrets of our success are, first of all, really understanding the amazing level of quality demanded by the wealthiest yacht owners in the world and, secondly, anticipating everything the crew will need for the trip,” said Leckey. “There is no other industry in the world that demands this level of attention to quality, from Beluga caviar to toilet paper (as the luxury yacht charter industry), and few other companies in the world that can meet those expectations.”

RELIANCE ON CUSTOMER REFERRALS

The company, as does 1-800 Yacht Charters, relies on customer referrals to spread the word. “We thrive on good remarks, and repeat business is key in this specialized industry,” Leckey said.

President of 1-800 Yacht Charters, Jana Sheeder, could not agree more.
WE LOVE REFERRALS!

France Yacht Charter VAT Faq’s

VAT REVISITED

We return to the VAT subject from July.  We previously informed our readers about the new French VAT regulations on yacht charters.  The VAT applies to yacht charters in France.

New regulations exist.  The new regulations apply from 15 July 2013 to charter agreements for yachts for the purposes of leisure travel.

COMPANY PRESIDENT 3 QUESTION Q&A

We sat down with Jana Sheeder, President and corporate Maven of SailAway Yacht Charter Consultants and 1-800 Yacht Charters, to review the answers to the three most frequently asked questions regarding the new rules.

First, question #1:  What rate will apply to French charters after 15 July?

“The rate has been set at 19.6% and will increase to 20% on January 1, 2014.  However, the taxable base can be reduced by 50% if the yacht is used outside European Union territorial waters, which by definition extend out 12 nautical miles from the coastline. Thus, if you started a charter in Nice, France, and cruised out beyond the 12 nm limit, and concluded the trip the next day in Sardinia, the tax would drop to 9.8%.”

Second, question # 2.   Does it apply if the charter starts and ends outside France?

“No. The law reads VAT is applicable on the charter if the vessel is put, ‘…at the disposal of the charterer in French waters.'”

Third, question #3.  Will charterers need to be involved with VAT registration and compliance in France?

“Not at all.  It is the responsibility of the yacht owner to make the necessary arrangements to register his or her vessel with the French taxing authorities.  As to the collection and processing of the tax, most owners are hiring local French-based fiscal agents.”

“As charter consultants, our responsibility is to clearly explain the new regulations to our clients. Many are repeat charterers who cruised multiple times in France in the past. For some, it will be a shock to hear their next Western Mediterranean yacht charter vacation may be subject to a tax of nearly 20%.  We will work with them to modify their itineraries, in an effort to mitigate as much of the tax liability as possible.”

French VAT To Impact Luxury Yachts

Posted on

NEWS FROM FRANCE

The cost to rent a private yacht in the fabled south of France is about to go up.  The impact on the economy has some in the charter industry concerned.

VAT EXEMPTION

In late November 2012, a European Union commission stated that the VAT exemption on chartering yachts in France is not compliant with EU VAT rules. France will now be required to take steps to remove the exemption from its tax legislation within two months, a ruling prompting one tax expert to say that France, “…cannot be regarded as a paradise for yachts anymore.”

COMPANY PRESIDENT COMMENTS

Yachts in Cannes France

Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters explains how clients have escaped the VAT in France, until now.

“The rules for chartering yachts in the European Union changed back in 2010.  Basically, chartering a yacht for less than 90 days requires VAT to be paid in the country where the chartered trip departs. France was able to avoid this ruling for many yachts by claiming that vessels registered as ‘commercial’ yachts could remain VAT exempt.  To save thousands of Euros in tax-related expenses, we would only promote commercial yachts to our clients considering a cruise in France.  Unfortunately, that option appears to be ending.”

RULE ENFORCEMENT

For the moment, France does not have a system in place to check and enforce the new rules.  French tax experts believe the new charter tax will be up and running by summer 2013. Consequences for non-compliance may go from large penalties to even seizing the yacht.

WAIT FOR SUMMER

Sheeder is less certain the new rules will be in effect by the summer.
“The process might be delayed by political lobbyists who represent the interests of the vast French yachting sector, ” says Sheeder.  “The French government will be pressured to find a way to prevent a massive exodus of yachts from French ports to other destinations with more favorable tax environments.”

BE PROACTIVE

Whether or not the new tax rule is delayed, Sheeder and her team are taking a proactive approach.  “We will begin notifying our clients in the coming weeks to prepare for a potential increase in the total cost of their yachting vacations in French waters.  Additionally, we are investigating other countries in the European Union as alternative Mediterranean yacht charter destinations.  Gibraltar, for example,  has no import duty for yachts over 18 meters – and no VAT.”

SAVE MONEY

Sheeder concludes, “If there is a way to save our clients money – we will find it.”

French Yacht Charter VAT Now In Effect

Posted on

EXEMPTION ON VAT TAX SOUGHT

France’s efforts to seek an exemption from VAT on yacht rentals has failed, and starting July 15, 2013, charterers can expect to pay an additional 9.8% for their Côte d’Azur yacht charter.

For years, the majority of Mediterranean yacht charter vessels based in France were registered as commercial vessels.  This is a strategy that allows their owners to sidestep VAT on the purchase of fuel and on the prices charged for charters.  The European Union prevailed in court to force France to follow EU VAT guidelines.  Beginning July 15, charters are subject to the nearly 10% fee.

Photograph of the island of Ischia, Italy. There is a large island with green trees at the top, homes at the bottom along the coastline,. Boats in the harbour. Blue sky with fluffy clouds. The island is on the left side of the photograph. The ocean is on the right side of the photograph.

Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters and SailAway Yacht Charter Consultants, Inc. is working closely with her preferred clients.  She explains the new fees and to explore alternative destinations where the VAT fees are lower or even not applicable.
Sheeder says,
“We are investigating other countries in the European Union as alternative Mediterranean yacht charter destinations.  Gibraltar, for example,  has no import duty for yachts over 18 meters – and no VAT.”

Girl Power – Women Make Splash As Luxury Yacht Charter Skippers

Posted on

Photograph of a woman in a nautical uniform. She is at the helm of a yacht. She is holding the ship's steering wheel. She is wearing a white uniform shirt and black shorts. She has mid-length straight blonde hair. She is smiling at the camera.

Female Captains on Yachts

ABLE BODIED SEAWOMAN?

It seems the commonly-used term, “Able-bodied seaman”  might need to be amended to, “seaman and -woman”  to reflect what might become a trend in the yachting industry – the emergence of female captains on mega yacht charter vessels.

WELCOME, FEMALE CAPTAINS

In an industry long dominated by men, a handful of skilled women are stepping to the forefront and taking the helm, and the responsibility, of operating both sail and motor yachts for hire.

(FEMALE) COMPANY PRESIDENT COMMENTS

According to Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters and SailAway Yacht Charters, today’s yacht owners look beyond gender when hiring a skipper.

“Megayacht owners look for experience and professionalism, first and foremost,” says Sheeder.  “Skippers must be experts in navigation and safety, and considering many yachts have large crew complements, they must be equally-adept at  personnel management.  A skilled captain is a multi-talented person, regardless of gender.  Hiring the best and brightest is the goal.

PRESENTING 3 MOVERS AND SHAKERS

Three women leading the ranks of females at the helm.  These are, for instance, Captain Sandra Yawn (motor yacht DEFIANCE), Captain Danielle de Vere (motor yacht MARY JEAN), and Captain Carol Benbrook (motor yacht SEDATION).

First up, Yawn. Captain Yawn has recently taken the helm on Mangusta motor yacht DEFIANCE. It is a stunning 72′ speedster currently available for Bahamas and Florida yacht charters.  Yawn brings years of experience to her new position. She was the former captain of the 148 foot motor yachts TUSCAN SUN and 142 foot yacht, LADY J.

Second is De Vere. She leads a crew of 12 onboard the 163 foot Caribbean yacht charter vessel, MARY JEAN.  De Vere earned her stripes crewing at her family’s daysail business in Australia, as well as operating luxury live-aboard dive vessels on the Northern Great Barrier Reef.

Third female captain is Benbrook.  Before the sale of the 143 foot Heeson motor yacht SEDATION, Benbrook was the skipper of the popular Virgin Island yacht charter vessel for three years.  In a 2010 interview with yachting journalist Kim Kavin, Benbrook was asked how it feels to be one of the only female motoryacht captains.  “I think there are five or six of us now on motoryachts. I think it’s fine. People respect me. I’ve never had any problems,” she said.

Is there added pressure on these women to be their gender’s pathfinders in the yachting industry?
Benbrook doesn’t think so and says the real pressure is on the ship’s mate. “It’s harder, actually, as a first mate. There’s more prejudice there. You have to be physically strong as a first mate to move lines and such. It’s different than being a captain, where there’s absolutely no strength involved. It’s all about moving levers at the helm.”

HONORABLE MENTION

Oh, we cannot leave her out.  BRAVO!  Female Captain Sandy Yawn of motoryachts Sirocco and The Wellington (which is The Wellesley, on Bravo Network’s, Below Deck Mediterranean series).
We wonder – will we ever see the ranks of women skippers swell and match the number of male captains at the helm of yacht charter vessels?  Are yacht owners truly open to hiring, “the best and brightest?”
Only time will tell…

Hollywood Icon Takes Own Luxury Yacht to Cannes Film Festival

FILM FESTIVAL YACHT CHARTERS

Why rent a private yacht to attend the world’s preeminent film festival?  What if you can stay onboard your own superyacht?

STEVEN SPIELBERG

That’s exactly what Steven Spielberg does. He opts to stay aboard his 282 foot luxury yacht charter vessel, motor yacht SEVEN SEAS.  He does this during film festivals like the 66th annual Cannes Film Festival, in Cannes, France.

And how do you pronounce, Cannes?

The legendary film producer and director spends most nights onboard.  Why not enjoy your Oceanco motor yacht SEVEN SEAS, along with wife, Kate Capshaw?

Spielberg served as the President of the film jury for the 66th annual competition.

DIRECTOR SPIELBERG COMMENTS

When asked about his role as head of the jury, Spielberg replied, “It is an honor and a privilege to preside over the jury of a festival that proves, again and again, that cinema is the language of the world.”

HOW DO CELEBS HANDLE CROWD?

While other A-list celebs were forced to navigate the crowded streets of Cannes and the endless sea of paparazzi, Spielberg and his guests escaped each evening to the privacy of  a, “floating villa.”  Spielberg yacht SEVEN SEAS offers accommodations for 12 guests and is loaded with amenities.

The infinity swimming pool on her aft deck can conveniently be transformed into a full helipad, or used as a screen for viewing movies while on deck or in the pool, itself.

Some of our readers may remember first reading about yacht SEVEN SEAS in June, 2011, while Leo DiCaprio and then-steady Blake Lively were onboard.  Later that same summer, the Mediterranean yacht charter vessel was again in the news when the Steven Spielberg yacht ran afoul of the Italian Coast Guard while guest Gwyneth Paltrow was visiting.

The film festival concluded.  The yacht and her owner planned to spend several weeks privately cruising.  They enjoyed the Mediterranean before heading back to the United States.

Is Your Caribbean Yacht Charter Destination Sustainable?

Posted on

QUESTION

Q:  “Our family is considering a Virgin Islands yacht charter vacation this winter.  We are interested in “Green”  travel opportunities and seeing destinations that focus on environmental sustainability.  How can we analyze a destination’s commitment to sustainable tourism?”

ANSWER

A:  The yachting industry continues to make great strides in it’s commitment to sustainability: from green initiatives to reduce plastic water bottle waste, to mega yacht charter vessels offering carbon offsets

ONLY HALF OF THE EQUATION

But the industry’s efforts are only half of the equation.  The destinations and their commitment to their residents’ well-being and the protection of the environment are crucial for long term sustainability.Logo of Travel Forever

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) serves as the international body for fostering increased knowledge and understanding of sustainable tourism practices.  When planning a sustainable vacation, the GSTC suggests these criteria.

TOURISM MANAGEMENT STRATEGY

Does the destination show that they care and implement strategies for its local economy, environment (including climate change) and social/cultural factors?

Local community benefits and economic opportunity

Does the destination track and report its local economic contributions; provide equal employment and training opportunities and extend opportunities to those who live in poverty?

Visitor management policies

Does the destination have policies designed to conserve key attractions and landscapes?  Do visitors receive direction so as to not destroy of natural and cultural assets?
In conclusion, you mentioned the possibility of a yachting vacation in the Virgin Islands.  Based on the criteria stated above, we would suggest contacting the official tourism offices for both the US Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands, and pose the GSTC questions to them.  Hopefully, their answers will demonstrate a commitment to green and sustainable tourism in the islands…
Smooth sailing!

Italian Builder – New Fast Displacement Megayacht

Posted on

SUPERYACHT WITH SPEED AND DISPLACEMENT

The words, “fast” and “displacement” rarely appear in sentences about yachts.   In the first place, displacement yachts tend to be built heavier and wider.  This is to achieve maximum comfort.  Trade-off for this stability at sea is traditionally speed.  However, one builder continues to throw convention to the wind.

Aerial view of a motoryacht underway.

BENETTI YACHTS

Italy’s Benetti Yachts, unveils a third generation of fast yachts.  This rounds out an extensive range of vessels.  For instance, class range semi-custom displacement vessels from 93′ to 145′ and custom-built megayachts starting at 45 meters.

WHAT MAKES THEM SPECIAL?

This new fast displacement line of composite vessels includes two models.  Not only Benetti F-140 (2012), but also brand new Benetti F-125.  As with other models, the new line Benetti F-125 is designed to be truly versatile.  In addition, it offers speed when needed, but also offers fuel efficiency and comfort.

BENETTI CEO COMMENTS

In a recent press release, Benetti CEO Vincenzo Poerio touted the new line.

“Many of our clients have requested faster, more versatile, and efficient boats, while maintaining the same level of comfort and customization found in our existing yachts. The new Fast Displacement line is designed precisely in response to these requests, and it rounds out our current offering in the Class Range. We haven’t just created a new series; we have invested time and resources – combining the Benetti’s 140 years of experience in super yachts with the technological know-how of Azimut Benetti Group – to create a new way of heading out to sea.”

EUROPEAN STYLING

Comfortable luxurious European styling make Benetti yachts popular.  Equally important, yacht charter customers often request Benetti yachts by name.

BENETTI YACHTS IN OUR FLEET

There are many popular Benetti motoryacht charter vessels.  For example, SILVER ANGEL,  CHECKMATE, and DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER.  Diamonds Are Forever is the latest James Bond boat to honor the film franchise. Silver Angel is designed specifically for long-range cruising.  Checkmate is a 2013 addition to the #Monaco yacht charter marketplace.
