What is the difference between a yacht, a ship, and a boat?
One naval recruit said that it is common lore that a ship rolls outward in a turn, while a boat rolls inward.

You can fit a boat inside a ship, but you cannot fit a ship inside a boat.
A ship is a commercial vessel such as a passenger ship, a freighter, or a tanker. A boat is smaller – could be a fishing boat, a dinghy, a sailboat, a row boat, a charteryacht tender, etc., and could actually be fairly large.
A ship is used for commercial purposes, whereas a yacht is used purely for recreational purposes, like yacht charter vacations. Size does not matter.
The distinction between a ship and a boat varies depending on regional definitions. As a general rule, a boat can fit onto a ship, but a ship cannot fit onto a boat. A ship, in other words, is a very large ocean-going vessel, while a boat tends to be much smaller.
Additionally, a ship usually is defined as having a displacement larger than 500 tons. During the age of sailing, a craft with three or more rigged masts was considered to be a ship, but this definition has been superseded, as different methods of power generation are used on modern ships.
LASTLY?
Watercraft that we typically associate with the category of “ship” include cruiseships, container ships, aircraft carriers, destroyers, tall ships, and frigates. All of these ships are extremely large and are designed to endure potentially long ocean voyages. Traditionally, they required a very large crew of skilled sailors to manage them, although some ships, especially container ships, are growing increasingly easier to run with only a small crew. This is thanks to the development of sophisticated computer systems and improved mechanization, among other things. These ships are also capable of carrying a large volume of cargo, people, or a combination of both.
Typical examples of boats include powerboats, rowboats, canoes, kayaks, umiaks, and tugboats. Boats tend to be easier to maneuver than ships, but they are not capable of carrying as much cargo. Boats are also not equipped for long voyage, and some boats will not fare well on the open ocean.
OK, A FEW MORE
A ship requires a crew of people to run smoothly, while a boat can often be handled by one person, alone. The system of authority on board a ship is also very clear-cut, with crew members organized into ranks. When a boat is large enough to have a crew, the members of the crew often work together under the captain. Depending upon the size of the yacht and the amenities and lifestyle promoted aboard, private luxury yacht charter vessels can carry as few as 2 crewmembers to as many as 40, with crew members including captain, first mate, mate, chef, hostesses, masseuse, and others.
Ships also usually carry boats on board, in the form of life rafts and rescue boats. These boats are also sometimes used to transport people and supplies between the ship and the shore, since very large ships cannot fit into some harbors, due to their draft or inability to fit under a particular bridge. Is it wishful thinking to hope the yacht will enter the Monaco yacht charter market in the summer of 2017?

“At the moment the boat is still very new to (our owner). He does not want to charter – just yet. He is considering building a larger vessel. I think once he gets a new build underway, he will charter this vessel to help with the costing.”
A smiling Sheeder said, “That’s the answer we wanted to hear.”

As of the date of this post, the yacht’s calendar is wide open for bookings in St. Martin, St Barts, and the Virgin Islands. For year-end reservations over the Christmas or New Year’s holidays, the yacht requires a minimum 10-night reservation. Charters of 5 nights or longer will be accepted for all other open dates.

The success of a mega yacht charter, indeed the entire yacht charter season of a superyacht, depends on one thing. Specifically, the ability of the vessel’s crew to meet the needs of the paying customers. The best cruising grounds and good weather matter little. Especially if the megayacht charter crew does not provide excellent service.
CLIENT AND OWNER TREATMENT
A luxury yacht charter client should be treated the same as you would treat the owner. The only difference is that the crew knows the preferences of an owner (e.g. his or her favorite restaurants, the time he or she likes to wake up in the morning, etc.). The crew does not know these preferences for a new mega yacht charter client.
This provides the crew with a challenge – to ensure that they learn as quickly as possible what the client expects to gain from the Mediterranean yacht charter experience.
THE RECIPE
It all comes down to this – the happiness of the lead charterer and his family and guests hinges on the effort expended by the staff of the superyacht, especially the Chief Stewardess and the Chef.
A good skipper will introduce the stewardess and chef to the lead charter client early on in the charter. This way, the stew can get a feeling of the level of service or distance expected by the customer, and the chef can get a sense of the level or formality needed with each meal presentation.
CAPTAIN YES
Whether a Mediterranean yacht charter or a Caribbean yacht charter, the captain’s role is challenging. He is legally bound to ensure the safety of the guests and crew and he has a priority to ensure that the owner’s property is safeguarded. At the same time, he has to keep the charter guests happy while they are on board, since the paying guests have a significant degree of freedom to decide the nature of the charter.
It is a delicate balancing act to ensure the clients’ demands do not compromise the crew.
THE LAWS
The skipper must also comply with the laws of the territorial waters through which the superyacht passes, with particular importance placed on drug restrictions. The captain must impose his authority in the event of discovering the use of recreational drugs. In all superyacht cruising areas, this is illegal. The captain is potentially liable for any breach of the laws. Additionally, in many jurisdictions, the discovery of recreational drugs on board can result in the confiscation of the vessel by the local authorities.
ESSENTIAL POINT
It is essential that the captain ensures that all charter guests (and crew) obey these laws. Should there be an issue with this, the captain may need to refer to the owner/broker to agree on termination of a specific charter. Charter agreements provide the captain with full authority to prohibit the use of recreational drugs by the charter guests.
THE ROLE OF THE CHARTER BROKER
A seasoned yacht charter broker understands this delicate balancing act faced by a charter captain and crew. If the broker has previously handled a particular client on another vessel, he or she will discuss the characteristics of the client with the new captain, as well as the chef and stewardess.
WHAT DOES A YACHT CHARTER BROKER DO?
Brokers also try to gather as much personal information about the charterer by means of a preference sheet. On such forms, the clients can spell out their food and beverage likes and dislikes as well as the recreational pursuits they hope to enjoy during the trip (shopping, swimming, quietly reading a good book, etc.). Such preference sheets help give the crew a deeper understanding of the charter guests desires and expectations.
At the conclusion of the luxury mega yacht charter vacation, it is equally important for the crew and broker to discuss the trip.

What does a Virgin Island yacht charter crew do, when anchored offshore and the craving kicks in for a slice of pizza?
If you’re Tara and Sasha Bouis, you buy a derelict boat, gut the interior to install brick ovens, and open the first “Pizza Boat” in the US Virgin islands.
PIZZA PI
The floating “Pizza Pi” boat is anchored in Christmas Cove. Specifically, at the east end of St. Thomas, next to Great St. James Island. There are multiple ways to order. First, you can order your pizza via your boat’s radio, second, call it in via cell, or third, even e-mail it. There are 2 ways to pick up your order. Moreover, you can either pick up the pizza in your dinghy, or Pi will deliver it to you. Delivery occurs only if you’re anchored in Christmas Cove.
THE LOCATION
The specific location is perfect. In specific, both personal boats and private yacht charter vessels from St. John and St. Thomas are constantly passing through the cove. Even tourist-packed daytime sightseeing and snorkeling boats are taking a detour. They stop by the pizza boat for authentic New York style “pies.” Hence, the boat’s name, Pizza “Pi” – get it…the Greek letter “Pi”???
WHAT DID THEY DO BEFORE PIZZA PI?
Before opening Pizza Pi, Sasha was working on charter yachts as the captain and Tara was the chef.
The idea for the pizza boat came from a night at anchor, when Sasha and Tara were too tired to cook, and too tired to dinghy ashore to look for a take-out meal. They spent the night eating microwave popcorn and dreaming about how great it would be if there were a pizzeria on the water nearby.
THEIR JOURNEY CONTINUES
After eight years of working on charter vessels together, the couple found a 37 foot abandoned boat on the island of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. They spent two years restoring the boat and installing a commercial-grade pizza kitchen with brick ovens and a giant Hobart dough mixer. To run the appliances, Sasha and Tara outfitted the boat with solar panels. They financed the project with the money they saved from working on boat charters.
The couple took a week-long intensive course at a “Pizza school” in New York, to learn to make authentic thin crust pies.
BRING ON THE PIZZA
The pizza boat was “launched” about 9 months ago, and business has been steady. On an average day, they make about 25 pies. On a busy day, 30 to 40 boats stop by for a pizza. Sasha designed a hatch where people on dinghies can place orders and pick up their pies.
THE MENU

HOW IS THE FOOD?
Currently, Pi is ranked as the best restaurant in St. Thomas on TripAdvisor. It has 59 five-star reviews and one four-star review. The person giving the boat a four-star review admitted the pizza is “delicious” but subtracted one star because they don’t deliver to her house on shore!

Freelance chef Jason Carruthers has joined the crew onboard the 37 meter Formula 1 inspired motor yacht AURELIA for the upcoming Balearic Island yacht charter season. Jason has spent the last 15 years traveling and honing his culinary skills, both on land an onboard private yacht charter vessels. His travels have helped him develop an extensive knowledge of international cuisine. Now living in Palma Mallorca, Carruthers joins the 6-person yacht charter crew on board the sleek superyacht, whose home port is also Palma.
Carruthers explains how he developed his talents for cooking:
“As a private chef I have worked on land and water and cooked in some incredibly remote places where sourcing ingredients can be a daily challenge. With extensive catering and consulting throughout Europe and working with chefs of all origins, I have been able to absorb a great knowledge of international cuisine.”
Aside from his culinary talents, Carruthers also holds an endorsement in Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (SCTW Maritme), as well as certificates in hygiene, and firefighting, and sea survival.

SPAIN YACHT CHARTER LICENSE
Yacht charters in Spain require the vessel secure a Spanish charter license in order to begin an conclude charters within Spanish waters.
