Luxury Lurssen Yacht Headed for Charter

Posted on

Profile photograph of superyacht ACE underway. She is headed toward the right side of the photograph.

Lurssen Yacht ACE

For years, the name Lürssen has been synonymous with some of the most luxurious, and certainly the largest yachts available for charter.  Mammoth-sized vessels such as the 70-meter motor yacht MARTHA ANN and the 60-meter motor yacht HUNTRESS (x-SOLEMATES) are testaments to the 130 yr old German shipbuilder’s dedication to craftsmanship and timeless elegance.

The latest launch by the acclaimed builder is no exception.  Lurssen motor yacht ACE has the distinction of being the first superyacht to splash down in 2012.  She measures 87 meters and left the company’s shipyard in Rendsburg on January 9th. The superyacht by Andrew Winch Design is magnificent.  Her exterior is both unique and instantly recognizable.

This is the unanswered, million-dollar question.  Will motor yacht ACE enter the luxury yacht charter market in 2012?

Stay tuned…

HOW TO PLAN YOUR YACHT CHARTER VACATION

Maven Looks Back at Biggest Gadget Flops 2012

Posted on

BOTTOM LINE

When it comes to technology and gadgets, they can’t ALL be winners.

SEDUCE THE OWNERS

Owners of the largest yachts in the world can be a fickle bunch.  Those multi-million dollar floating homes loaded with the newest toys often carry unworthy toys.  Hot toys at boat shows catch the eye of wealthy boat owners.  They end up on hundreds of yachts.  They are easily branded as ho-hum and brushed aside by guests and crew.

COMPANY PRESIDENT COMMENTS

Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters, understands the appeal.  New techno-toys and amenities on mega yacht charter vessels are important.

“When our clients ask us to provide a new model vessel for their Mediterranean yacht charter vacation, they expect that boat will have the same new gadgets and amenities that they enjoy at home,” says Sheeder.  “Our team is constantly reviewing the new gadget and tech marketplace for unique and user-friendly items that can enhance the client’s onboard experience.  Every year we some real winners and a few that  fizzle and fade away.”

FLOP …

Here are 2 of Sheeder’s picks for the biggest tech flops of 2012:

Photograph of the Sony PlayStation Vira with a sad face on the screen. The face appears as 2 dots above a frowning end parentheses character. The PlayStation Vita is black, and the sad face is white.

PlayStation Vita

PlayStation Vita

First, skippers on charter yachts know the importance of keeping the children of their charter clients amused and occupied.  For years, onboard game consoles like PlayStation have been a staple.  Launched in early 2012, PlayStation Vita promised amazing graphics, a growing online community, and cross-play with the PS3. Still, the new device never caught on as a “must have” platform. “The failure of Vita to catch on seems to raise the question about the viability of handheld gaming consoles at a time when we see more and more children with game-capable smartphones, “ says Sheeder.

“We anticipate a shift away form gaming consoles on our yachts, in favor of onboard smartphones and tablets that the children can borrow during their vacation.”

Photograph of a 3D HDTV television standing on white space. The screen shows 2 soccer players leaping in the air. The player in the background is wearing an orange shirt and black pants. His arms are spread, as if he is flying. His body is facing front, but his head is looking toward the right side of picture. The player at the front of the picture is wearing green shirt and black pants. His back is to the front of the photo. His left leg is intersecting with the right arm of the player at the back of the photo. The background is a full stadium with bright stadium lights shining. The right arm of the green-shirted player is virtually coming out of the screen and going after the solid beige soccer ball, as if he is defending a goal and diving to catch it. He is wearing thick white gloves. It reads 3D, in huge white 3D letters, at the bottom left side of the television. Those letters seem to float off of the television screen.

3D HDTV

3D Television

Second.  It’s true. 3D HDTV hit the market before 2012, but the argument can easily be made that this is the year these much-hyped TVs became irrelevant, with a mere 3% adoption rate in American homes.   Sheeder explains,

“User-friendly is the key to a suitable toy or gadget on a yacht.  Who wants to sit in the saloon having to wear an awkward pair of specialty glasses – that for some can induce a headache – just to watch a movie?  The charter experience is based on a model of total relaxation, and the 3D TV experience, while trendy, is not catching on with our yacht owners.”

Monitoring International Laws Keeps Yacht Charter Maven On Her Toes

Posted on

Digging Deeper

You would think Delivering The Superyacht Experience™ to boating clients would be pretty straightforward:  A client expresses interest in a yacht for a family vacation.  The charter broker presents several options.  The client makes a selection.

THIS IS NOT SO CLEAN

In reality, it’s not nearly so clean and to the point.  At least not for the handful of super-brokers who handle the world’s elite travelers.

JUST ASK JANA

Just ask luxury yacht charter maven Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters.

According to Sheeder, matching a yacht to the client’s budget is just the starting point.

“While our clients are most interested in a yacht’s layout, amenities, and price, we dig deeper – into the yacht’s registration, the nationalities of the crew, and any governmental regulations and laws that might impact the success of the charter and comfort and respect of our clients.”

photo of large red Maritime book on its side with a gavel lying on top

El Método Español

In addition, Sheeder mentions the rules affecting yachts for hire in Spanish waters.  “We’ve seen a significant increase in interest in Spain, particularly Balearic Islands yacht charter vacations,” says Sheeder.  “Many yachts based in the South of France and Monaco are willing to deliver to the Balearics to accept theses charters.  However, yachts not in possession of a Spanish charter license are at a significant disadvantage, and face restrictions as to where the charter can begin and end, and what nationalities are permitted in the crew.  Something as simple as bringing on a Spanish resident to offer therapeutic massages to the charter guests could be a problem if the yacht is not licensed for charter in Spain.”

OTHER ISSUES

Sheeder and her staff monitor other licensing and legality issues. For instance:

  • Local regulations regarding the charter guests’ use of watertoys. For example, waverunners
  • VAT implications of chartering in certain European Union countries.
  • Advance entry requirements prior to arrival in certain ports of call.

SHEEDER COMMENTS

“Not understating these regulations and laws can result in a negative experience for the charterer and  guests, and in some cases increase the overall cost of the charter by 10% or more – a significant sum considering many charters are priced in the €500,000 to €1,000,000 per week range.”

La Manière Française

Currently, Sheeder is monitoring the possible impact of French social security tax responsibilities on yacht crews.  In March 2017, a decree was passed to require crewmembers and their non-French employers (the yacht owners) to make contributions to ENIM – the French mariners’ social security agency. Any yachts and crews spending more than 90 consecutive days in France or French waters are subject to the tax.  The decree was suspended Sept 13, following a disastrous summer tourist season that saw France luxury yacht charter revenues plummet by 40%.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?

Sheeder is waiting to see if the decree is actually overturned in 2018, or if it will come back in a modified form. “These increased costs associated with crew wages end up being are passed on to the charterer, in the form of higher rates for yacht rentals,” says Sheeder.    If the decree is reinstated, Sheeder plans to either offer her clients yachts with French crew, or to convince them to bypass French waters and charter elsewhere in the region.

Going The Extra Mile

Do affluent charter clients realize the level of detail involved in orchestrating a vacation on a superyacht?  Sheeder chuckles at the question: “Probably not, but that’s fine with us. It’s like an attorney getting your traffic ticket dismissed in court.  You don’t care how he or she does it –  as long as you don’t have to pay the ticket!  It’s a similar scenario for us – we obsess over the small details in order to deliver a memorable vacation experience to our clients.  A pat on the back is nice, but a satisfied charterer who becomes a repeat customer is even better!”

HOW DO I RENT A YACHT?

A luxury yacht charter is the ultimate vacation for today’s elite travelers.  Wired, connected, and driven by sustainability and the greater social good, they want to immerse themselves and participate in unique cultural events. 1-800 Yacht Charters understands that their chartered yacht must serve as a platform to an eco-friendly adventure – a chance to reconnect with family and friends, embrace diverse cultures, and rejuvenate mind, body, and spirit.  If this sounds like your next vacation, CONTACT our charter consultants at:  1.800.922.4824 (North America) or 305-253-7245 (local South Florida and international) today.

New England Yacht Charter – What To Do

Posted on

SEPTEMBER ROCKS!

I like September. It is my birth month. College and pro football kick off (Go Miami Hurricanes!).  New episode of my favorite TV shows hit the airwaves. It’s also my favorite time to go boating.  Specifically, New England yacht charter vacations.

Late summer means slightly cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. In specific, at the beach, anchorages and marinas.

NEW ENGLAND

Nowhere is this more evident than New England (USA).  From Boston, to Martha’s Vineyard, to the Hamptons on Long Island, NY.  It is my favorite time to enjoy The Superyacht Experience™.

FAVORITE DESTINATIONS

Here’s a quick peek at two of my favorite late summer New England yacht charter destinations.  Specifically, Kennebunkport ME and Newport, RI.

[Click HERE to find a great New England Yacht Charter boat for a late summer escape!]

Kennebunkport, ME

Photograph of a marina in Kennebunkport, ME. There is 1 small boat anchored in the calm water. The water looks like glass. Perfect reflection. The marina is surrounded by cute little buildings. One has a big lobster painted on the side in red.

Why?  It has the best beaches in the state.  I am convinced God created the gorgeous rocky shoreline for one purpose.  In specific, for the express purpose of taking stunning photographs.

What To Do?  Anchor off Goose Rocks Beach.  Tender ashore. Walk the paved path along the cliffs of Marginal Way.

Where To Eat?  Onboard the yacht, of course!  Your chef prepares using some of the freshest seafood and late summer fruits available in New England.  If you like lobster, Maine is your Mecca.  Join the locals and indulge at the oh-so-casual Clam Shack (2 Western Ave). In addition, go to the Chowder House (79 Pier Road).

Where To Dock?  Try Chicks Marina on the Kennebunk River.  Expect top-notch service from the dockmaster to the dockhands.

Newport RI

Aerial photograph of the Newport Cliff Walk next to mansions on the coastline. The water laps at the cliffs on the left side of the photo.

Why?   Newport is the famous resort town for New England’s rich and famous.  Before The Hamptons, Newport was the summer escape. In specific, for the Vanderbilts, Rockefellers, and the captains of America’s industrial revolution.   The town has much to see.  For instance,  mansions, superyachts, and summertime music and art festivals.

What to do?  If you love yachts, visit the Newport Boat Show in September. Prefer shopping?  Check out the boutiques on Thames Street.  Take a tour at one of the famous mansions.  Stroll along the picturesque Cliff Walk.

Where To eat?  You can’t eat seafood every meal.  Okay.  Well, maybe you can.  Regardless, pleasant surprises await at the number of Mexican-themed restaurants. For example, Diego’s (Bowen’s Wharf) or Perro Salado.

Where To dock?  The premier facility in town is Bowen’s Wharf.  In addition, the renovated Newport Yachting Center.

In conclusion, New England is a great boating destination for any summer dates.  If you want to escape the heat and the crowds, this is it.  Plan your next yacht vacation in September in New England.  It is amazing!

Silence: A Noise Free Superyacht Experience?

Posted on

THE NEXT REVOLUTION

Our team is constantly looking for ways to improve The Superyacht Experience.™   Silent running yachts are a futuristic dream.  On some superyachts, we’ve added the latest Molton Brown and  Jo Malone personal care products to the staterooms and ensuite bathrooms.  Other yachts now have expanded, large swim platforms.  They have also converted the aft watertoy garages into contemporary “beach clubs”  with lounge and spa facilities.

WHAT IF…?

But what if the next revolution to the experience was more sensory in nature and less tactile?   Maybe the future will bring something that envelops the yacht with a calming, quiet sensation.

THE SUPERYACHT EXPERIENCE™

Maybe the future is already upon us…and the next revolution to The Superyacht Experience™  is the 262 foot hybrid yacht ARTEFACT.

Aerial photograph of a motoryacht underway. The yacht is heading from the upper left side of the screen to the lower right side of the photo. The waves are pushing out underneath the yacht as it goes through the water. The yacht is solid white with a light brown deck.

The brand new megayacht was built in Germany in a shipyard on Eider River in Rendsburg.  Nobiskrug yacht ARTEFACT has been deemed, “Our coolest project ever!”  by her designer, Gregory Marshall.

SHHHH…

So what makes this superyacht revolutionary?  The answer: SILENCE…

The yacht was built to operate in near-silent conditions.  She draws energy from 248 feet of solar panels on her sundeck.   A huge array of batteries store the solar-generated power. These batteries also allow her to operate for short periods without the need of combustion engines.

GOING GREEN

In addition to the overall sense of calm, onboard guests can feel good.  They know their yacht serves as an eco-friendly platform to a unique experience at sea.  First, running on hybrid power means less harmful emission into the atmosphere.  Second, silent running yacht, of course.  Third, Marshall designed the yacht with a variable-speed Azipod-propulsion and dynamic-positioning system.  This allows the yacht to hover near or over fragile reefs without the need to drop a damaging anchor into the water.

YET MORE GREEN TECHNOLOGY

One last nod to green-design technology.  Many of the yacht’s technical systems operate on recycled, filtered wastewater.

This new superyacht is one of the first to meet the stringent Tier III emissions regulations.  These are by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

One day soon, we hope all luxury yacht charter guests can add “noise-free” to the checklist of their own superyacht experience…

HOW TO BOOK A YACHT CHARTER

In conclusion, contact 1-800 Yacht Charters at https://www.1800yachtcharters.com/book-now-contact-us/.    We look forward to planning The Superyacht Experience™ for you.

Small Details Can Make Or Break Your Yacht Charter

Posted on

THE MAGIC OF YACHT SHOWS

I love yacht shows, but probably for a different reason than most yacht charter brokers.  Sure, it’s a chance to see the newest yachts as they enter the market.  It is also a special opportunity to sample gourmet treats prepared by Michelin-star yacht chefs.  My associates refer to me as a wannabe gastronome.

For me, the real intrigue of attending a yacht show or yacht open house is the chance to watch our company President, Jana Sheeder, as she boards a yacht, inspects the vessel, and meets the crew.

Photograph of 4 people, smiling at the camera. They are standing in the main salon of a superyacht. The three people on the left of the photo are wearing black t-shirts and name badges on lanyards. The person on the right side of the photo is wearing a white blouse and gold name badge.

IN HER OWN WORDS

So what sets Jana apart from other charter brokers?  What is it that allows 1-800 Yacht Charters to innovate beyond the basic rental of yachts and to deliver what we call, The Superyacht Experience™ to our clients?

I’ll let Jana explain our point of difference.

“Attention to detail and focus on perfection are at the core of our business philosophy.  Aristotle is credited with the saying, ‘The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.’   We truly believe in the famous philosopher’s message.  It is easy to fall into the trap of analyzing a yacht’s onboard amenities.   Others see features, above benefits. Certainly, items like an ondeck hot tub, an outdoor cinema area, and Hamman spa draw your attention to a yacht, but it’s the small things, some tangible, some more of a feeling, that can make or break the onboard superyacht experience for a client.”

WHAT DOES SHE MEAN?

Here is an example of Jana’s point.   Recently aboard a yacht new to the market, 2016 Benetti motor yacht DREW.   During Yachts Miami Beach (February, 2017), at our city’s premier luxury yacht charter and sales show.  Other guests focused on the yacht’s layout and her unique design components. For instance, the covered seating area and hot tub, positioned on the forward Portuguese deck.  It is different, because it is not on the sundeck-  where most yachts locate their on deck Jacuzzi.  What was Jana looking at?  The soap and lotion dispensers in a cabin’s ensuite bath…

Photograph of a tray of bath products on a yacht. The products are all made by Molton Brown. The tray is beige, and the vanity is light colored marble.

“They provide Jo Malone soap and lotion to the guests,” Jana called out to me.  Later, she would explain the importance of providing quality skincare products to the charter guests.

“An article about the British Royal Wedding claimed Kate Middleton used Jo Malone Lime Basil & Mandarin to scent Westminster Abbey on her wedding day.  I researched the brand and was impressed by the unique, original scents.  It may seem strange to the casual observer, but the brand and quality of the soaps and lotions provided to the charter guests can be integral to the overall superyacht experience – especially for the female guests.  The fragrances provided by the yacht should be subtle, so as not to clash with any perfumes or colognes worn by the guests.  Additionally, the lotions need to have a nourishing texture since the charter guests are exposed to sun, salty water, and outside air much of the time during the cruise.”

As we moved from yacht to yacht, Jana would make notes and take photos of many items and features of the vessel, including the toiletry products displayed in the bathrooms.   She would make a star of approval on her list next to brands like Molton Brown, Byredo, and Aesop Resurrection Aromatique.

THE LITTLE THINGS

Here are other small and seemingly inconsequential items we critique during our yacht inspections.

First, floral arrangements.  Not so much the fact that flowers are displayed, but rather when they are displayed.  We always inquire from the crew if fresh flowers are put out on the morning of the last day of the charter.  This one simple act can have a positive impact on the charter guests, as they feel their last day on board is as fresh and inviting as their first day.

Second, bed sheets and thread count.  Affluent travelers appreciate an experience that mirrors their lifestyle.  The quality of linens, including bed sheets, towels in the ensuites, cloth napkins on the dinner table, etc. must reflect both the yacht’s upscale aesthetic and that of the charterer guests.

LASTLY

Third, personal hygiene.  Many of our charter clients enjoy lifestyles that includes the services of personal attendants. For instance, chefs, maids, butlers, and personal assistants.   These supernumeraries are well-dressed and well-groomed.  Their demeanor and appearance is a reflection of their employers.   When client are onboard, the yacht’s crew assumes some of these roles, especially in terms of waitstaff.  Jana will often discretely look at the fingernails of the deckhands and the stewardesses.  This is to see if their nails are neatly trimmed and manicured.  We also take note of the crew’s uniforms.  Are they new?  Clean?  Ironed and pressed?

Photograph of Jana Sheeder on the dock at a superyacht show. She is looking toward the left side of the photograph. There is a large white yacht behind her.

THE WHOLE VERSUS THE SUM

Many luxury yacht charter vessels have similar layouts and amenities.  Taking a holistic approach to small details has helped Jana and her team focus on continually striving for perfection.  Jana Sheeder realizes attention to details can mean the difference between a good vacation and a truly memorable superyacht experience.

Superyacht Project – Will Oceanco yacht AMARA Join the Luxury Yacht Charter Fleet?

Posted on

AMARA yacht with night lights on

THE NEWS

Danish builder Oceanco unveiled their superyacht project.  She is the 120 meter yacht AMARA.  In specific, she debuted at the Dubai International Boat Show (DIBS).

THE CONCEPT

The yard continues to push the boundaries of design.  Oceanco yacht AMARA showcases the builder’s new “lifestyle philosophy” concept. She places great emphasis on a family-oriented style of living.  Sam Sorgiovanni, the yacht’s designer, describes the resort-style concept of the project.  Besides this, Mr. Sorgiovanni says, “…the interior and exterior design work in harmony to create a holistic feeling of a relaxed well-appointed resort.”

THE AMENITIES

Our quick review of the yacht’s initial technical specs discovers an interior with a contemporary style.  She has natural tones and light woods.  Her design is to embrace the ‘resort’ lifestyle.  Plenty of wide open spaces and natural light lend to the relaxed atmosphere. She is an amazing superyacht project.

AMARA beach club with giant pad for sunbathing

Amara features many onboard amenties. For instance, 2 theatres, 2 Majilis-style areas (Majilis means “a place of sitting” in Arabic), and a climbing wall.  In addition, she has an upper deck waterfall that flows into the main deck swimming pool.  There is a wellness areas on the lower deck, including Hammam steam bath and a beauty salon.  This gorgeous yacht also has a water slide and a circular relaxation pod that suspends over the water.  How unique is she!

The LUXURY YACHT CHARTER QUESTION

Oceanco has a solid reputation for building luxury yacht charter superyachts. For example, 56 meter The WELLESLEY and the massive 95 meter Oceanco yacht INDIAN EMPRESS are in their fleet.  Briefly, we lick our chops to be the first to offer this.  Motoryacht  AMARA promises to be popular for our clients.

COMPANY PRESIDENT COMMENTS

According to our company president, Jana Sheeder, we may have to wait a while.

“As we are seeing with the 70 meter Heesen yacht GALACTICA SUPER NOVA, also a new concept in resort-style yachts, I believe yacht AMARA will enjoy extensive private use by her owner prior to becoming available for charter.  The good news is that we continue to witness growth in the experiential travel sector, especially with an emphasis on wellness yacht charter vacations.  The demand for superyachts with resort facilities such as spas and beauty salons is strong, and the eventual owner of AMARA will be in a solid position to capitalize on this growing business trend.”

THE OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Here’s the Danish builder’s press release via PRNewswire:

Oceanco Unveils Amara – A 120-Meter ‘Resort’ Yacht

________________________________________

ALBLASSERDAM, The Netherlands, February 28, 2017 /PRNewswire/ —

Oceanco revealed the lifestyle philosophy of creating a yacht designed for extended families and friends. Amara provides unparalleled living and entertainment facilities for up to 20 guests. What is Included in a Yacht Charter?

Posted on

LET’S GO YACHTING!

The popularity of private luxury yacht charter vacations continues to rise.  One reason?   The desire of travelers to minimize Covid-19 exposure while on vacation.  Indeed, charter yacht holidays are considered among the safest vacation options.  When you are on a private yacht, only your family and your crew are present.  Important to note:  the crew is tested for the virus prior to your arrival].  Compare chartering to staying in a hotel.  Certainly, you and your family can potentially come into contact with many employees and guests in a hotel or upscale resort.

Perhaps you are considering your first vacation on a charter yacht.  Luxury certainly awaits you – but what else can you expect?  Specifically, what is included when you rent a yacht?

BAREBOAT OR CREWED?

Let’s begin with a small distinction – and an assumption.  For this blog, we are referring to “crewed”  (with crew) charter yachts. Alternately, some travelers rent a bareboat.  What is the distinction?

BAREBOAT

A bareboat is a boat you operate on your own. For example, in the same way that you rent a car, you rent a boat and operate it yourself.  Of course, this assumes you are qualified to operate a boat – and have a cruising resume to prove it!

CREWED YACHT

In this blog, we are focusing on “crewed” yachts.  A crewed yacht simply means you are the onboard guests – not the operators.  A crewed yacht is a yacht with a crew.  A talented staff of professional mariners handles all aspects of operations – from navigating to cooking and cleaning.

“ALL-INCLUSIVE”

The price of a crewed yacht for hire includes the yacht, the crew, and the use of onboard amenities and water toys.  However, there are more items that may or may not be included.

To understand what else is included in a charter vacation, we must begin with an important distinction:  Is the price quoted “all-inclusive” or “plus expenses?”

Most all-inclusive charters include your meals and basic beverages (sodas, water, and non-premium alcohol).  Furthermore, they also include the fuel needed to operate the yacht, as well as any dockage fees.  Normally, local taxes and requisite government cruising permits are included as well.

Please note – some “all-inclusive” yachts do not cover the local taxes and cruising permits.  Make sure to read the fine print before signing your charter agreement.

As a general rule of thumb, all-inclusive charters are commonly available on smaller (40 to 80 foot) sailing yachts based in the Caribbean.  Some smaller motor yachts also offer all-inclusive pricing in the Caribbean.  All-inclusive pricing is uncommon in the Western Mediterranean (Spain, Italy, France, etc.).  Yachts in the Eastern Mediterranean (primarily Greece) offer a hybrid version of all-inclusive pricing.  Specifically, food and basic beverages are included, but fuel and dockage are not.

SEE the Top Three Reasons Celebrities Love Yacht Charters

SCUBA DIVING

Many all-inclusive yachts offer extra services for an additional fee. For example, the yacht you are considering for your vacation might be all-inclusive, yet charge a separate fee for the use of onboard SCUBA diving equipment.

SPECIAL REQUESTS

“Special requests” can also add to the total price of an all-inclusive yacht charter. As outlined above, beverages and non-premium alcohol are normally included.   However, requests for specific premium brands and/or vintage wines and champagnes will be charged to you as an additional expense.

“PLUS EXPENSES”

Most larger yachts for hire opt for an a-la-carte approach to what is included in the charter fee. Yes, the charter rate includes the yacht and crew and the use of amenities and toys.  The similarity to an all-inclusive charter ends there.

Large yachts, both in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean employ “plus expenses” pricing.  The concept is quite simple and straight forward.  All expenses related to the operation of the yacht during the charter are the responsibility of the charterer.

RUNNING EXPENSES

Certain expenses are commonly referred to as “running expenses.”  They include but are not limited to, food, all beverages, fuel, dockage, and any applicable taxes and cruising permits.

SO HOW CAN I BUDGET?

At this point, you might be wondering, “How can I budget for these running expenses, since I won’t know the total expenditures until the conclusion of the charter?”  It’s a great question.  To avoid confusion and possible embarrassment, yachts that operate “plus expenses” collect a deposit from the charterer before the trip begins.  This deposit is referred to as an “Advance Provisioning Allowance” or  “APA.”  Most yachts require an APA deposit equal to 30-35% of the charter fee.  Historically, yacht captains have calculated a typical charter incurs about 30% more than the actual charter fee in running expenses.

APA FUNDS

Captains use the APA funds they have on hand to pay for the running expenses throughout the tip.  For example, they use the funds to pay for fuel, and for dockage.

THE CAPTAIN’S EXPENSE LOG

A Captain keeps a detailed log of all expenditures during the charter. At the end of the charter, the Captain presents a detailed expense report to the lead charter guest.  Any remaining funds are returned to the charterer.

SHORTAGE?

Sometimes, there is a shortage. In this case, the charterer owes additional funds to the captain before departing the yacht.   Of course, you are probably thinking, “What if I don’t have enough funds on hand to cover the shortage?”   No worries!  Captains monitor the expenses throughout the charter. If they sense there might be a shortage, they will come to the lead charter guests and explain the situation.  If necessary, most charter guests simply wire additional funds into the yacht’s APA account.

OVERAGE?

In the event of an APA overage, the lead client decides the distribution.  Funds either return to the client or, as if often the case, the monies apply to a crew gratuity.

Yacht Maven Shares Secret Bahamas Yacht Charter Island With her Clients

Posted on

KEEP IT FRESH AND UNIQUE

Keep it Fresh” – that’s the challenge charter brokers face when dealing with repeat customers.

Cruising in the Bahamas is no exception – after all, how many times can charterers circle around Grand Bahama, or make the milk run from Nassau to the Exumas and back before finally saying, “Been there…Done that…”

IRONY OF THE BAHAMAS

The irony of cruising in the Bahamas is the fact that there are HUNDREDS of unique islands and protected coves.  The challenge –  the Bahamas encompass 180,000 square miles of ocean space – and charterers can only visit a handful of islands during a typical week-long yachting holiday.

COMPANY PRESIDENT COMMENTS

But Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters has come up with the perfect solution to keeping her clients excited and their trips to the Bahamas unique and fresh:  SPEED and a SECRET island.

Sheeder addresses the “speed” component by means of one of the fastest mega yachts for charter anywhere in the world – the iconic James Bond yacht OCTOPUSSY.  Once the world record holder as the fastest luxury yacht on the planet, a $7 million dollar refit has this 12-passenger yacht looking better than the day she was launched in 1988.

All of her upgrades – extending the sun deck, adding a Jacuzzi-style hot tub, etcetera, have added some weight, and have slowed her down – just a bit” says Sheeder, “but she can still cruise 2 to 3 times faster than similar-sized luxury yachts.”

SUPERYACHT OCTOPUSSY INSPECTION

A recent private inspection of Octopussy and a meeting with her captain and crew gave Sheeder an idea on a unique charter itinerary, built around visiting a secret, uninhabited island.  “Heesen yacht Octopussy is not just fast – she also has a shallow draft – much shallower than most megayachts.  This means she can get into shallow, protected coves and achorages in the Bahamas that are off limits to most superyacht charter vessels,” says Sheeder.

CAPTAIN COMMENTS

With the help of the captain, Sheeder identified a special island – far from the typical cays visited by yachts based in Nassau.

“We located a beautiful, remote island, protected by the Bahamian government. The island and the surrounding water park have one of the healthiest ecosystems in all of the Bahamas.  It’s truly one of the loveliest islands in the Bahamas, and rises out of the deep ocean about 15 miles east of the closest inhabited major island. There are miles of pink sand beaches, gorgeous sandstone cliffs, and an extraordinary abundance of wildlife, both on the island and in the surrounding waters.”

KEEPING IT SECRET

Sheeder will not reveal the location of the secret island.  NOPE.  She keeps that information private for charter clients.  “We work hard at creating a point of difference. Specifically, between our services and those of our competitors.  We continually look for an edge.  Important proprietary info allows us to deliver The Superyacht Experience™ to our clients, since 1976.”

SHEEPISH GRIN

She does get a sheepish grin when she talks about this special place and the role motor yacht Octopussy plays. “Other yachts cannot offer you this secret island destination.  It is simply too far to travel and return to Nassau in a week’s time.  Octopussy has the ability to cruise at 25 knots or even faster, and can easily reach this destination and get back in a timely fashion to Nassau.  Plus, her shallow draft means OUR clients can enjoy quiet anchorages that few yachts can normally enter.

Sheeder explains some wildlife clients can expect to encounter at this protected island and the surrounding sea park. For instance, many threatened and endangered species. The Bahamian government reports long tail tropic birds, sooty terns, oyster catchers, and osprey nest on the island and surrounding cays. At the center of the island is a large mangrove and creek habitat that serves as a nursery for fish, sharks, conch, and crawfish. Green turtles have been seen foraging off the southwestern shore of the island, and in the northern bay. The coral reefs and grass flats in the surrounding sea are very healthy and offer a home to an abundance of sea life.

Bahamas animals include swimming pigs, great blue herons, green sea turtles, and iguanas

SHEEDER CONTINUES

“It’s an amazing ecosystem,” says Sheeder, “Worthy of visiting, and more importantly, protecting for future generations.  We are so excited to share this fresh and secret destination with our Nassau yacht charter clients.” #protectmarinelife
