Looking for a change of scenery? We get it. “Pandemic fatigue” is starting to set in for most of us. Indeed, the idea of escaping the “Covid blues” sounds better and better every day. Covid travel restrictions are important to know.
COVID-19 GUIDELINES BELOW
For many affluent travelers, a holiday luxury yacht charter is very appealing. After all, if you have to practice social-distancing, why not set up camp on a private yacht?
MUCH OF CARIBBEAN HAS TOUGH RESTRICTIONS
Unfortunately, much of the Caribbean is still imposing harsh restrictions on tourism. For example, mandatory tourist quarantines are in place in the British Virgin Islands. It is the most popular yacht charter destination in the world. We anticipate these restrictions will still be in effect for Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
BAHAMAS IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS
Thankfully, there is one tropical destination open for business. That is the Bahamas.
Below are guidelines in effect as of November 20, 2020, for the holiday season.
GET TESTED BEFORE ARRIVAL
These rules apply to every guest over 10 years old. Each passenger on your yacht must get an RT PCR nasal swab Covid-19 test 5 days or less before arrival. Test results from any other type of COVID-19 test are unacceptable. Passengers under the age of 10 do not need to be tested. All tests must be negative for entering the Bahamas.
SUBMIT A HEALTH VISA
Each guest must complete a travel health visa, along with submitting a negative Covid-19 test,. The application is available online. First, go to www.travel.gov.bs. Second, select “International,” and create an account. Fill out your visa information, upload your negative test results, and submit your application. Allow up to 72 hours to receive an approval confirmation. IMPORTANT TO NOTE, you need to print the approval document and bring it with you. You must present the document to Bahamian officials when entering the country.
You must opt-in for health insurance when you complete your health visa application. Specifically, you will be covered for any Covid-19 health issues during your time in the Bahamas. For example, the cost of a mandatory rapid antigen test (required on day 5 of your visit) will be covered. You’ll also be covered if you require quarantine (up to $7000) or medical evacuation (up to $50,000). Charter guests staying 4 days or less pay $40 for coverage. Visitors staying more than four days pay $60.
TAKE A RAPID ANTIGEN TEST ON DAY 5
You are required to take this test if you stay in the Bahamas for 5 or more days. You must quarantine aboard your charter yacht while you await the results of the test. Don’t worry, results are typically texted or emailed within 60 minutes. IMPORTANT NOTE, a rapid antigen test is not required if you have no plans to go ashore during your charter.
SUBMIT A DAILY ONLINE HEALTH SURVEY
Charter guests are required to answer an online health questionnaire each day. This survey is used to identify potential Covid-19 symptoms. Any guests who exhibit Covid-19 symptoms during their charter will be required to take a rapid antigen test. Any positive results will require a Covid-19 RT-PCR swab test.
FOLLOW ONSHORE SAFETY PROTOCOLS
There are rules and requirements to follow when onshore. For example, wearing a face mask is mandatory in public places, except on the beaches. Additionally, social distancing is expected wherever possible in public areas. Finally, be aware that some of the individual islands have evening curfews.
IT’S BETTER IN THE BAHAMAS, RIGHT?
It’s nice to know we can escape to the Bahamas during the holidays. Specifically, since so many restrictions are still in place in our hometowns. As they say, “It’s Better in the Bahamas.” Test it out! Everyone can enjoy a Bahamas yacht charter vacation IF we follow the guidelines listed above.
This has been an unsettling year for everyone. You owe it to yourself, friends, and loved ones to appreciate and enjoy the holidays. Relax and reflect upon all that we have, and do. Take time to smell the roses and to express gratitude. Show yourself some love and plan a well-earned vacation. Push away the stress,k and leave the fatigue behind. Welcome mindfulness and wellness. Make memories and celebrate another year of togetherness. Please stay safe, follow the rules, and take Covid-19 prevention seriously. Regardless, please have a WONDERFUL holiday. Love, Jana
Travel is a way of life for Chef Jorge Valderrama. He holds culinary diplomas from schools in Santiago and Lima, Peru. His career is punctuated by working and training in diverse destinations. For instance,
South America
Australia
New Zealand
Singapore
However, he never forgets he is from Peru. Jorge has a great interest in Peruvian and Latin American cuisine.
“I feel very identified with Latin American cuisines, and always enjoy sharing the flavors and memories of my past.” Jorge Valderrama
THE BALINESE YACHT
Now, Jorge is the chef onboard Bali yacht charter vessel DUNIA BARU. This is a wooden 51 meter motor-sailor built in 2014. It is designed in the traditional Indonesian Phinisi style. Accordingly, Phinisi yachts are wide and stable for cruising in comfort. This wooden superyacht accommodates 14 guests in 7 spacious and well-appointed staterooms.
Jorge is proud to incorporate locally-sourced Balinese foods into his menus.
“When cooking I always prioritize using the best and freshest product available. This enables me to create a diverse and creative menu while catering towards guests’ preferences.”
TIME FOR DESSERT!
We present his recipe for Bali-inspired Tiramisu, as an illustration of Jorge’s talents.
“This is a simple tiramisu recipe which I’ve modified using some local ingredients from Bali’s markets. The use of palm sugar adds a toffee like flavor which blends very well with the coffee and creamy cheese mix.”
½ cup palm sugar, shaved and dissolved in ½ cup of boiling water until thick.
ASSEMBLY:
Whisk together mascarpone and cream cheese. Keep whisking and slowly add the thick palm sugar syrup until the mix is smooth. Keep mix in the fridge.
THIS LOOKS AMAZING…
Mix all soak ingredients and keep aside.
Lay down lady fingers on a baking tray until creating an even layer.
Spoon the soak mix on the lady fingers until evenly soaked but not too much to avoid breaking.
Add:
A thick layer of the filling
Another layer of lady fingers and repeat the soaking process
The rest of the filling on top
Sprinkle cocao powder on top and keep in the fridge for 3 hours before serving.
THE FINISHED PRODUCT
Plate and ENJOY!!!
The Superyacht Experience™ (created by 1-800 Yacht Charters) includes wonderful meals, prepared by talented chefs, using fresh, local ingredients wherever possible…
It’s hard to beat the outright indulgence of a Virgin Islands crewed yacht charter. Every detail is managed by a trained crew. From operating the yacht, to preparing your customized meals, you are covered. From keeping the vessel tidy and shipshape, to reading charts, all is done for you.
WANT TO ESCAPE?
But what about those times you feel the need to escape? To be alone with loved ones? Have a chance to trade polite intrusiveness with no-frills quality family time?
WHY NOT BAREBOAT?
Families who routinely enjoy luxury yacht charter vacations with a full-crew compliment can now opt to go boating in total privacy. They can choose a bareboat yacht charter.
What is bareboating? The concept is simple – just as you would rent a car to drive yourself, with some basic training, you can rent a bareboat and take the helm yourself!
WHAT IS A BAREBOAT YACHT CHARTER?
A“bareboat”is just as the name sounds. It is a boat with just the bare essentials onboard. It comes with no food, no beverages, and most noticeably, no crew. You do your own cooking and cleaning. You operate and sail the yacht, yourself.
WHERE CAN I FIND A BAREBOAT?
Fleets of bareboats can be found in nearly every location you would expect to find a fully-crewed yacht charter vessel. Virgin Islands bareboat vacations are perhaps the most common. There are hundreds of boats available for rent in both St. Thomas, USVI, and Tortola, BVI.
Both sail yachts and motor yachts can be rented. They accommodate 2 to 8 passengers. A few bareboat catamaran yachts can even accommodate up to 10 passengers.
WHO RENTS BAREBOATS?
Companies such as 1-800-BAREBOAT, the Moorings, and Sunsail specialize in arranging self-skippered charters in destinations around the world; for example, Bahamas, Florida Keys, Greece, Corsica, Sardinia, France, Cote d’azur, Tortola, Tortolla, St. Thomas, Tahiti, Bora Bora, Tonga, Miami and South Florida.
GLOBAL FLEETS
Customers can choose from a global network of monohull sailboats with brands like Beneteau, Sun Odyssey, Dufour, or Jeanneau – and multihull catamarans with brands like Fountaine Pajot, Lagoon, and Sunreef.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Basic rental prices tend to be less much expensive than those of luxury crewed yacht charter vessels, but customers need to remember they are responsible to purchase and prepare their own meals. The cost to provision the yacht must be considered when comparing this bare bones charter option to the price of a crewed yacht.
WHAT IS INVOLVED IN BAREBOATING?
Another important factor – the customer’s qualification to operate a boat.
Just as it takes skill and normally a license to operate a motor vehicle, similar rules apply to bareboats. While formal licenses are not usually necessary, a solid level of competency is necessary. The ability to read basic charts, navigate, and to set the anchor are the most important skills required to rent a bareboat.
HOW CAN I GET QUALIFIED TO BAREBOAT?
Luckily, these skills can easily be mastered, either through formal boating courses, or simply by garnering casual boating experience with your own boat or the boat of a friend or neighbor.
Popular ideas for bareboat yacht charter vacations are anniversary celebrations, family reunions (with boats sailing in tandem), couples getaways, and snorkeling adventures.
WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE CREW OR SAIL YOURSELF?
So before you plan your next tropical odyssey, give some thought and compare bareboat vacations to crewed charters – one of them will surely be the right choice for you, your family, and friends!
The list of television shows canceled has been released by the networks. Are Below Deck Mediterranean and Below Deck Sailing Yacht on that list?
MANY SHOWS CANCELED
No one knows the exact reasons for the cancellation of particular shows. In specific, decreased viewership, lack of political correctness, unpopular storylines?
NOT-SO-GOOD NEWS
Per TV Insider, in no particular order, some shows did not fare well. For example, gone are ABC’s, The Baker and the Beauty, and CBS’s, Criminal Minds and God Friended Me. In addition, Cinemax’s Strike Back, The CW’s, Arrow, and Facebook Watch’s, Sorry for Your Loss. Further, Fox’s Almost Family, Freeform’s Party of 5, the History Channel’s, Vikings, and POP TV’s, Schitt’s Creek.
BUT WHAT ABOUT BELOW DECK MEDITERRANEAN?
Good news, viewers. The Below Deck shows are not on the chopping block this season.
WHAT A YEAR THUS FAR…
In conclusion, this year has been a series of challenges. For instance, the Coronavirus Pandemic, protests about police brutality and racism (think George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, etc), and decisions to wear or not to wear masks (and thoughts of political motivations behind health choices). In addition, the Australian bushfire, the deaths of Kobe Bryant plus 8 passengers in helicopter crash, flooding in Indonesia, the phases of the moon and planets, business closures, you name it.
SO WHAT TO DO NOW
Life is returning to normal. Yes, it is a “new normal,” but nonetheless, MORE normal than in the past few months. Yachtsmen and women are renting yachts and going on vacation again. SO WHY NOT JOIN THEM? Many ports and countries have reopened to travelers and yachts, so contact us for information as to which destinations you may now enjoy!

Time aboard a luxury yacht charter vessel is the perfect platform to reconnect with friends and family – and champagne is often the tonic of this celebratory time together.
As crews begin to prepare their superyachts for the upcoming New Year’s eve yacht parties in St Barts, our charter advisers at 1-800 Yacht Charters take a look at the 3 trendiest premium champagne choices for Caribbean yacht charter clients this winter:
THE HOTTEST CHOICES
Dom Pérignon, Rosé “P2” – 1996
It’s hard to imagine a name a name more synonymous with premium champagne. Go to just about any nightclub, and you’ll find a millennial trying to impress by ordering a bottle of “Dom.”
It is a simple, balanced champagne with a pleasant aroma. Hints of a Cognac-like richness abound. A 2006 vintage 750ml bottle is approximately $150.
However, when it comes to luxury yacht charter guests, the most sought after Dom is the 1996 Rosé “P2.” The P2 moniker refers to the age of the vintage, which the wine makers at Dom refer to as “Plénitudes.” They describe the maturation process as, “…not in a simple linear trajectory, but in successive leaps into new expression, each of which are called Plénitudes. In the long journey of elaboration, the wine goes through this metamorphosis, a transformation. Each Plénitude contributes to Dom Pérignon’s singularity. In the darkness of the cellars, from one Plénitude to the next, Dom Pérignon will grow and blossom, transmuting time into energy.”
A 750ml bottle of the 1996 Rosé “P2” is approximately $795.
A BIT OF TRIVIA
A FUN SIDE NOTE: Why do we call it a “toast?” Thanks to Wikipedia, “According to other stories, the word toast became associated with the custom in the 17th century, based on a custom of flavoring drinks with spiced toast. The word originally referred to the lady in whose honor the drink was proposed, her name being seen as figuratively flavoring the drink.
Louis Roederer, Cristal – 2009
On a nearly equal plane in terms of popularity with Dom Pérignon, Cristal (pronounced “chrisTALL”) has been a favorite among yachting enthusiasts for many years. American wine critic Robert M. Parker Jr’s website gives this vintage a score of 94-96 and describes it as one that, “…literally shimmers on the palate, showing great depth and purity in its sumptuous layers of fruit. It is a magnificent wine endowed with superb length and exceptional overall balance. The 2009 Cristal is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. The percentage of wine aged in oak is 15%, which is down slightly from previous vintages.”
A 750ml bottle of the 2009 Louis Roederer, Cristal is approximately $250.
Moët Ice Imperial
It seems every food and beverage preference sheet submitted by clients prior to their winter St. Barts yacht charter vacation has listed Moët Ice as a “must-have” item.
Launched in early 2016 as a summer indulgence, the popularity has not waned. So what makes this champagne so unique? The answer is “ICE.” This champagne was designed to be served with ice, and that was a real innovation in the world of sommeliers. Ice has a rich fruity taste, perfect for warm weather winter charter destinations such as the Caribbean and the Bahamas. Moet Ice Imperial champagne is a special blend consisting mainly of Pinot Noir (40-50%), Pinot Meunier (30-40%), and Chardonnay (10-20%). It is suggested to be served with three ice cubes in tall glasses of Cabernet, and can be mixed with other refreshing ingredients such as mint leaves, lemon peel, cucumber, or cardamom seeds – to enhance the intensity of flavor, and the icy freshness. A perfect tropical indulgence.
A 750ml bottle of Moët Ice Imperial is approximately $60
AND THE WINNER IS…

So, while we are happy to share the popular brands and trends that we see selected by our clients, YOU have the ultimate say. The Superyacht Experience is a bespoke vacation like no other!
With the tight economy forcing American boaters to reconsider expensive trips abroad, the appeal of Florida yacht charters has increased dramatically in the past two years. Perhaps not on par with a Virgin Islands yacht charter, there are still plenty of points of interest while cruising along the South Florida coast, especially for charterers who also enjoy scuba diving.
While the Florida Keys may be known for their fishing and scuba diving locations, both Broward and Miami-Dade counties have some of the best spots to scuba dive in the nation. From natural reefs to sunken ships, it’s amazing what can be found off the shores of Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Many of the reefs and wrecks can be found in 60 to 80 feet of water, making South Florida a great choice for both novice and advanced divers.
Here are some of our top picks:
TUGBOAT JAY SCUTTI
First, Tugboat Jay Scutti (off Ft. Lauderdale)
Sunk in Sept. 1986, this 95 foot tug was seized by the government in a drug smuggling operation. It was bought at auction by a man who renamed it the “Jay Scutti,” after his son. The wreck lies in 70 feet of water and is centered between a 45 foot wreck named “Moonshot” and another named “Pride,” a 95 foot sailboat. All three wrecks are tethered together by a cable. Divers can usually explore two of the wrecks in one dive. Lots of fish inhabit the Jay Scutti, and it’s possible to enter the wreck through various openings.
HAMMERHEAD REEF
Second, Hammerhead Reef (off Ft. Lauderdale)
Located just south of Port Everglades and running to the Dania Pier, this two and a half mile reef is famous for its sharks, rays, and large grouper. The front portion of the reef is in 60 feet of water, while the back side plunges to 80 feet. In some spots, the reef rises to nearly 20 feet. Tons of marine life call this reef home and make it a great spot for reef diving.
MIAMI BEACH WRECK TREK
Third, Miami Beach Wreck Trek (off Miami Beach)
It’s pretty impressive how artificial reefs have been created by linking multiple wrecks together via a guide cable. The Miami Beach Wreck Trek is a shallow dive, about 50 to 60 feet of water. It begins with a pair of army tanks on the southern end. As they swim north, divers encounter several tons of limestone boulders and more wrecks like the “Rio Miami,” a 105 foot tug which sits upright in about 65 feet of water.
THE BELZONA TRIO
Fourth, also off the Miami Beach coast is a trio of sunken tug boats. The “Belzona Ona,” lies in 85 feet of water. About 75 feet away is the second tug, “Belzona Two,” in 60 feet of water. The deepest of the trio, “Belzona Three,” is a 100 foot tug at a depth of 85 feet.
BELCHER BARGE
Finally, not far away is the “Belcher Barge #27,” a 195 foot steel barge that was sunk in 1985. The barge flipped on its way to the bottom, but experienced divers can penetrate it and swim the ship’s entire length.

After 30+ years in the business, 1-800 Yacht Charters is still doing the things that earned them the title of “World’s Best Private Cruise” as recognized by Forbes.com.
“We don’t charter yachts,” says Sheeder, “we deliver The Superyacht Experience™ to our clients.”
Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters and 1-800 BAREBOAT
Sheeder goes on to explain her company’s philosophy. “Our mission began with a simple question. ‘What would happen if we built our business for #generosity?’ Instead of assuming that people want to simply maximize self-interest, our decision to focus on generosity allowed us to cater to our clients’ deeper motivations to make the world a better place.”
“This focus has propelled us to move beyond the basic rental of yachts and to deliver a true Superyacht Experience. While our competitors focus on finding the customer the “right boat,” we choose to take a more holistic approach.”
HOW A YACHT CHARTER INQUIRY IS PROCESSED
When a #luxury yacht charter inquiry comes in, Sheeder and her team of consultants interview the potential clients to learn what makes them tick.
“Today’s affluent world travelers are looking for more than just a static vacation on a yacht, says Sheeder. “They’re wired, connected, and driven by sustainability and the greater social good.”
Furthermore, Sheeder says the clients hope to immerse themselves and participate in unique cultural events and #voluntourism. Their chartered yacht serves as a platform to an eco-friendly adventure. “It’s a chance to reconnect with family and friends, embrace diverse cultures, and rejuvenate mind, body, and spirit,” says Sheeder. She chuckles and adds, “Besides, we often don’t even discuss particular yachts until our second or third conversation.”
SHEEDER CONTINUES
Sheeder admits some clients are puzzled at first. Most charter brokers immediately try to match the client to a particular yacht and crew. “At some point, they realize our entire focus is on them,” says Sheeder. “We share with them our sense of purpose, our commitment to promoting yachts and crews dedicated to protecting our environment, and how we created our business for generosity. Then, we explain our ‘Best Price Guarantee’ – something no other yacht charter brokerages offer in our industry.”
For Sheeder, focusing on generosity, sustainability, and taking the time to learn what motivates her clients is a recipe for success and fosters a deep sense of fulfillment. “We create a bond where we and the client work together [holding her hands together with fingers entwined] – synergistically – not only to create a special experience, but also to make a difference in the world.”
Many luxury yacht charter guests arrive at their yachting destination via private air charter. Now, imagine showing up at your local FBO to board your plane. Consequently, only to find there is no crew or jet waiting for you. Sadly, fraudulent air charter scams are on the rise. Fortunately, there is now a free resource to help you avoid what could be a miserable start to your Superyacht Experience™.
AVIATION INDUSTRY
The business aviation industry has just published a free online guide. Without a doubt, it helps protect travelers new to air charter. The General Aviation Dry Leasing Guide outlines the laws and regulations related to the leasing of private aircraft. Moreover, this guide keeps unsuspecting charterers from scams by illegal charter operators.
BEWARE OF SCAMS
Ryan Waguespack is Senior Vice President. Specifically, of the National Air Transportation Association. Importantly, he addressed the problem in a recent interview with Robb Report. He said,
“As the holidays approach, travelers are turning to private aviation for its enhanced cleaning protocols and limited exposure to unknowns. It’s vital that these newcomers aren’t placing themselves or their assets at risk from illegal charter activity.”
ORIGINATION
Many of the scams seem to emanate from Europe. Scam artists create websites that advertise aircraft available for rent. Further, with legitimate tail numbers. Unfortunately, after the clients have paid, the websites disappear. Clients have no flight – and no money. Obviously, to make matters worse, there is no hope of a refund.
Subsequently, similar scams are taking place here in the USA. Some charter operators are using aircraft with no FAA Part 135 certification. What is the certification? The FAA requires certification to demonstrate that the aircraft and the crew have met stringent safety standards. Furthermore, legitimate charter operators must have higher levels of insurance coverage. According to Waguespack. “Operators chartering aircraft illegally may have insurance policies that are not sufficient to cover commercial activities. In the event of an accident, passengers may find their own corporate and estate assets at risk.”
TRUST THE GUIDE
The guide is by trusted air industry associations. Specifically, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA). In addition, the National Air Transportation Association (NATA). Obviously, both contributed to the guide.

A new, higher VAT (Value Added Tax) rate went into effect. All charters that commenced after July 20, 2015 in Greek waters are subject to the tax.
Greek yacht charter vessel at anchor
LEGISLATION
The new legislation raised the overall VAT from 13% to 23%. Specifically, lower rates apply to certain charters, based upon the duration of the hire.
There are two VAT categories for charters lasting 3 days or longer:
Category I – vessels licensed to perform international cruises: 9.2% (previously 5.2%).
Category II – vessels licensed to perform long range cruises within Greek waters: 11.5% (previously 6.5%).
SHORT-TERM CHARTER APPLICABILITY
For charters up to 48 hours, there are no discounted rates. Full VAT of 23% is due (previously 13%).
Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters, points out the new VAT rates affect ALL charters taking place after July 20, 2015 – even if the charter agreements were signed in prior months. “With the current economic crisis in Greece, we’ve been anticipating some form of VAT austerity,” says Sheeder. “With each charter agreement we prepare, we add a clause indicating that the charterer is responsible for any increase in VAT – this way, there are no surprises. The more details we cover with our clients, the smoother their Superyacht Experience will be.“
QUESTIONS FOR VISITORS
How will the increase in VAT on private luxury yacht charter vacations in Greece effect the number of yacht charters?
Will clients seek alternate destinations or, “grin and bear it” to enjoy a Greek yachting holiday?
