There are over 25 annual shows for superyacht vessels around the world. One show is the biggest and best. It is the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS).
EXHIBITORS AT THE BOAT SHOW
The list of exhibitors at the boat show is typically VIP’s of the superyacht industry. Trinity, Feadship, Lurssen, and Benetti yacht charter enthusiasts are in awe at the sheer number of yachts gathered in one location.
“We can take our clients on a tour of several equal-sized yachts and let them compare deck space, cabin size, and onboard amenities.”
“Some of our most popular mega yacht charter vessels are here, for example, ANJILIS and BIG CITY (both along the Face Dock between slips 9A-D) and MARAYA (docked at Bahia Mar in slip A1).”
The 2009 showcase of luxury sail and motoryachts takes place October 29th through November 2nd.
The cost of enjoying a Mediterranean yacht charter vacation may be going up as new rules, and confusion, regarding taxes on commercial yachts go into effect.
VAT
In the past, luxury mega yacht charter vessels in the Mediterranean were often exempt from paying a French Value Added Tax (VAT or sometimes referred to as, TVA) on both the value of the charter and on any fuel and provisioning. Recently, increased pressure from the European Union to bring French law into line with the rest of the union states has resulted in the European Commission forcing the French Government to amend its rules on exemptions.
“In the past, a yacht used solely for commercial activity would hire a permanent crew and register as a commercial vessel to obtain an exemption from paying the VAT. Under the new rules, the same activity, crew, and registration rules apply, but there is a catch – the yacht ‘must be used for navigation on the high seas.‘”
It is this new wrinkle that has Sheeder and the yachting industry confused. “So far, the French government have not defined or clarified what is meant by the term, “used for navigation on the high seas.“
THE INDUSTRY WONDERS
A manager of a fleet of mega yacht charter vessels in France, who wished to remain anonymous, echoed Sheeder’s concerns. “At what point does ‘high seas’ come into play? Ten miles off shore? Twenty miles? No one knows,” the manager said.
It seems the taxing authorities are not certain how to proceed, either. “We are not aware of any attempts by the French Customs and Excise authorities to enforce this new rule,” says Sheeder.
WAIT AND SEE
For now, it remains a game of wait-and-see. Industry lawyers are closely monitoring this situation, and conferences are planned in London and Monaco in the coming weeks to keep charter professionals up to date.
OUR CLIENTS
Sheeder points out the importance of explaining the new rules to her customers.
“While we are not charging the VAT to any of our clients, we are clearly explaining the potential tax liability they may incur, perhaps even after the conclusion of the charter.“

France’s efforts to seek an exemption from VAT on yacht rentals has failed, and starting July 15, 2013, charterers can expect to pay an additional 9.8% for their Côte d’Azur yacht charter.
For years, the majority of Mediterranean yacht charter vessels based in France were registered as commercial vessels. This is a strategy that allows their owners to sidestep VAT on the purchase of fuel and on the prices charged for charters. The European Union prevailed in court to force France to follow EU VAT guidelines. Beginning July 15, charters are subject to the nearly 10% fee.
Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters and SailAway Yacht Charter Consultants, Inc. is working closely with her preferred clients. She explains the new fees and to explore alternative destinations where the VAT fees are lower or even not applicable.
Sheeder says,
“We are investigating other countries in the European Union as alternative Mediterranean yacht charter destinations. Gibraltar, for example, has no import duty for yachts over 18 meters – and no VAT.”
It seems the commonly-used term, “Able-bodied seaman” might need to be amended to, “seaman and -woman” to reflect what might become a trend in the yachting industry – the emergence of female captains on mega yacht charter vessels.
WELCOME, FEMALE CAPTAINS
In an industry long dominated by men, a handful of skilled women are stepping to the forefront and taking the helm, and the responsibility, of operating both sail and motor yachts for hire.
(FEMALE) COMPANY PRESIDENT COMMENTS
According to Jana Sheeder, President of 1-800 Yacht Charters and SailAway Yacht Charters, today’s yacht owners look beyond gender when hiring a skipper.
“Megayacht owners look for experience and professionalism, first and foremost,” says Sheeder. “Skippers must be experts in navigation and safety, and considering many yachts have large crew complements, they must be equally-adept at personnel management. A skilled captain is a multi-talented person, regardless of gender. Hiring the best and brightest is the goal.
PRESENTING 3 MOVERS AND SHAKERS
Three women leading the ranks of females at the helm. These are, for instance, Captain Sandra Yawn (motor yacht DEFIANCE), CaptainDanielle de Vere (motor yacht MARY JEAN), and Captain Carol Benbrook (motor yacht SEDATION).
First up, Yawn. Captain Yawn has recently taken the helm on Mangusta motor yacht DEFIANCE. It is a stunning 72′ speedster currently available for Bahamas and Florida yacht charters. Yawn brings years of experience to her new position. She was the former captain of the 148 foot motor yachts TUSCAN SUN and 142 foot yacht, LADY J.
Second is De Vere. She leads a crew of 12 onboard the 163 foot Caribbean yacht charter vessel, MARY JEAN. De Vere earned her stripes crewing at her family’s daysail business in Australia, as well as operating luxury live-aboard dive vessels on the Northern Great Barrier Reef.
Third female captain is Benbrook. Before the sale of the 143 foot Heeson motor yacht SEDATION, Benbrook was the skipper of the popular Virgin Island yacht charter vessel for three years. In a 2010 interview with yachting journalist Kim Kavin, Benbrook was asked how it feels to be one of the only female motoryacht captains. “I think there are five or six of us now on motoryachts. I think it’s fine. People respect me. I’ve never had any problems,” she said.
Is there added pressure on these women to be their gender’s pathfinders in the yachting industry?
Benbrook doesn’t think so and says the real pressure is on the ship’s mate. “It’s harder, actually, as a first mate. There’s more prejudice there. You have to be physically strong as a first mate to move lines and such. It’s different than being a captain, where there’s absolutely no strength involved. It’s all about moving levers at the helm.”
HONORABLE MENTION
Oh, we cannot leave her out. BRAVO! Female Captain Sandy Yawn of motoryachts Sirocco and The Wellington (which is The Wellesley, on Bravo Network’s, Below Deck Mediterranean series).
We wonder – will we ever see the ranks of women skippers swell and match the number of male captains at the helm of yacht charter vessels? Are yacht owners truly open to hiring, “the best and brightest?”
Have you ever rented a private yacht or plane with a female captain in charge? How was the experience? Why do you think there are so few women to date at the helm of superyacht vessels? Share your comments and testimonials with us below!
As the year draws to a close, luxury yacht charter maven Jana Sheeder, President of SailAway Yacht Charter Consultants and 1-800 Yacht Charters, is beaming.
MAVEN COMMENTS
“We’ve closed our year with the addition of 40 brand new 2011 models to our global network of yacht charter vessels. The largest of our new offerings is the 81 meter Feadship motor yacht AIR, followed by Proteksan Turquoise yacht TALISMAN MAITON (ex-Talisman C) and Rossi Navi motor yachtHIGH POWER III (ex-Numptia), both 70 meters in overall length.”
NEWEST AND LARGEST YACHTS
Sheeder’s companies have a reputation of offering the newest and largest yachts in the world’s best destinations. She and her teams spend countless hours identifying potential charter yachts.
“Rarely do we add any yacht to our fleet that is more than two to three years old, “ says Sheeder. “Even when we consider classic-styled yachts, we prefer to promote modern reproductions of famous yachts. Clients know they can turn to us for yachts that are on the cutting edge of new technology and styling.”
CLASSIC SAILBOAT
Germania Nova classic saiilboat replica
An example of Sheeder’s pursuit of modern yachts is the newly launched 47 meter sail yacht GERMANIA NOVA, a replica of a classic racing schooner first launched in 1908. Says Sheeder,
“Turn of the century guests onboard the original yacht would marvel at the technological comforts onboard this modern vessel. From satellite televisions to 5.1 Dolby surround sound, the only thing ‘old’ on this yacht is the classic design.”
AWARD-WINNING YACHTS
Important to realize, many of the new yachts are award winners in global design competitions. Competitions, for instance, the annual ShowBoats Design Awards.
“We pay close attention to these competitions,” reports Sheeder. “The best designers and naval architects in the world judge these yachts. Odds are great that if the best minds in the industry like a boat, our clients will, too.”
SUPERYACHT EXUMA
Superyacht EXUMA
Recent award winners promoted by SailAway to their clients include late 2010 launch Perini Navi motor yacht EXUMA(Best Exterior Design & Styling Award: Displacement Motor Yachts 100-199). Also, the 42 meter Holland Jachtbouw motor yacht CALLIOPE (Best Exterior Design & Styling Award: Semi-displacement Motor Yachts).
WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE NEW YEAR
In conclusion, as to the new year, Sheeder is even more optimistic.
“Our research indicates that 72 new megayachts were ordered in 2011, the largest at 100 meters, and an average length of almost 43 meters. Eighty per cent of these newly-built yachts will be launched in 2012 or 2013, and we’ll surely have an entirely new inventory of yachts-for-hire to present to our discriminating clientele!”
The world of gulet charters in Turkey just took a giant leap into the future with the launch of superyacht REGINA.
PRESENTING REGINA
Turkey — The 56-meter gulet yacht REGINA was launched on 11th February 2011, in Bodrum. The vessel was completed in 24 months in Pruva Yachting’s shipyard. Sea trials and final fitting complete before the summer 2011 season.
“For years, some people have felt charters in Turkey were synonymous with old, wooden gulets with few onboard amenities,” says Sheeder. “With the launch of REGINA, we are proud to herald the arrival of a gulet with megayacht proportions and luxurious appointments. She’s a modern, high-performance schooner with the creature comforts customers expect on a charter yacht.”
ACCOMMODATIONS
Accommodations are offered for 12 guests in 6 staterooms. All staterooms have 32 inch flat panel TV’s with satellite connection. They also include Blu-ray disc players and PlayStation3 game controllers. A centralized remote control system controls both music and televisions for a few locations; for instance, the saloon, aft deck, fore deck, and all interior areas.
Sheeder is excited to share this vessel, one of the newest and largest yachts available for charter with her clients. “This 56 meter gulet presents a new dimension to cruising in the Eastern Mediterranean – the traditional “feel” of a classic gulet, with the modern level of luxury that discerning charterers demand.“
RATES
Summer 2011 rates for REGINA are €75,000 per week in July and August. She offers €65,000 per week in all other months. Her rates are plus any local taxes and all running expenses, for example, food, fuel, bar, and dockage.

CATAMARAN SILVER MOON
Many guests eat a meal or two ashore during a week-long yachting vacation. Therefore, sail catamaran SILVER MOON announced a half board food option.
MEALS ON CATAMARAN
A typical all-inclusive charter features 3 meals a day. The half board option exists. It includes all breakfasts. It also includes 3 lunches and 4 dinners with beverages, the standard ship’s bar, and snacks. That said, all other meals are taken ashore at the guest’s expense.
JANA SHEEDER, COMPANY PRESIDENT, COMMENTS
Jana Sheeder, President of SailAway and 1-800 Yacht Charters, comments. She explains the benefits of a half board option:
“Part of the attraction of a yachting vacation is the chance to indulge in local customs and foods. Sometimes, fresh food on the yachts goes to waste as the clients tend to eat ashore two or three times a week in the various ports of call. The half board option cuts down on waste, preparation materials, and cleanup,” explains Sheeder.
RATES
Clients save money. The overall cost of the boating vacation can be reduced. It can then reflect the fewer meals and food served onboard.
The sailing yacht SILVER MOON is a 44′ catamaran that launched in 2002. She has 3 guest cabins. Each includes a queen berth and private bathroom. The yacht has wind scoops to limit the need for air conditioning. The crew buys earth-friendly paper products, biodegradable cleaning products, and local organic produce when available. #eco-friendly

There are many production 100-foot motoryachts in the Bahamas yacht charters market, but owners Dr. and Mrs. Emmons of luxury charter yacht SEAFARER didn’t want a cookie-cutter boat, particularly one costing $6 million. They wanted something that they could personalize to reflect their taste, their love of literature and the arts.
As a result, you will see throughout the boat bookcases built specifically for the Emmons, and nooks created especially to fit their fine collection of marine artwork.
Luxury charter yacht SEAFARER motor yacht is a 30-meter megayacht available for a Bahamas yacht charter vacation. Yacht SEAFARER has accommodations for eight (8) guests in four (4) cabins. This new mega yacht was built by superyacht builder Hargrave and was launched in 2008.
Bahama yacht charters are all about outdoor adventure in the sun, so a large inventory of waytertoys are important. This mega yacht charter vessel carries a 15′ widebody Nautica tender with 90hp Yamaha engine, two 2-person kayaks, snorkel gear, towable toys and tubes such as Boogie Boards, plus beach toys such as volley ball, Frisbees, and 4 bicycles.
You, your family, and friends can enjoy a week-long odyssey in the Bahamas onboard this yacht for only $42,500 for 8 guests. Running expenses (items such as food, fuel, and dockage) are extra. For more information, contact Jana Sheeder, CEO of 1-800-YACHTCHARTERS at jsheeder@1800yachtcharters.com
